When Free Isn't Free

All you can eat! Free!

Who doesn't love a deal? Getting something for nothing always seems like a good plan, especially to a natural frugalista like me. What could be wrong with getting something for free?

But think of the buy-one-get-one-free deals. Well, that just means that it's 50% off and you end up with more. That's good, right? But was it something you would have bought anyway, or are you 'settling' just because it's cheap? As someone who despises (and battles) clutter, I have to ask myself this question every time I make a purchase. I'm still using colored pens that I bought at Costco about 12 years ago. Sure, such a deal.  But now that I no longer keep a food journal, they sit unloved. But really, unless you teach elementary school or journal in fun colors, how often do you use a green or purple pen?

Perhaps you see why I gave up journalling? These were 'light' entries.
One of the most important lessons I've learned about freebies has to do with breakfast buffets. Anyone who knows me well knows that I do not eat a traditional breakfast. First of all, I'm not hungry in the mornings. Second of all, I often train successfully on a nearly-empty stomach. Finally, if I eat proper, chewable 'food' (balanced macronutrients and sufficient calories) at breakfast, it seems to awaken The Beast and then The Beast is ravenous and foraging for food all day long until I go to sleep at night. The only foods that seems to slip past The Beast undetected are smoothies, or something light like a protein muffin, fruit or some nuts.

Typical late breakfast (possibly more of the same later)

Toppings for sure- these are my personal favorites

Now let's move on to the 'freebie' issue while traveling. Due to Derek's line of work in the travel industry, we are lucky enough to get good deals on cruises (aka floating buffets), and I also tag along with him on business trips. Sometimes we are fortunate enough to get free breakfasts- a nice problem to have, unquestionably. But just as "Freedom isn't Free," neither is the free breakfast. Not for me, anyway. I will explain.

If I give in to the temptation to "take advantage" of the deal, and just eat the breakfast meal, I set myself up for dietary disaster for the rest of the day. If I do this every day, I set myself up for failure for the entire trip. This means that I come home much heavier than I left and makes me unhappy that I can't wear clothing on Day 7 that I could wear on Day 1. Turns out breakfast isn't free for me one little bit. It comes at a huge cost to my well-being. Coming home from a trip miserable sucks. So I decided to just say no to the free breakfast.

Even healthy smoked salmon in the foreground will awaken The Beast

So tempting, but best for me to just have a tiny bit of fruit at breakfast, if any at all.

Plenty of time later in the day for this deliciousness.

On the other hand, Derek would be insane to turn away a free breakfast. Often, he eats so much and so late, that his breakfast even carries him over past lunchtime. For him, it's a sweet deal. Especially if chocolate muffins are involved.

I get a muffin top just thinking about having this for breakfast

Derek, on the other hand can happily partake in a chocolate muffin for breakfast (and more, plenty more)

You might be wondering what I do instead of eating the free breakfast? You can call me crazy if you want to, but this is what works for me. I will have tea or coffee (with probably half a cup of milk) with Derek while he eats and not feel deprived one bit. After all, I'm not hungry. However, if there is something very special on the menu that I can't get at home, I will have a taster. I'm not insane, after all! Then I'll have either a smoothie or something light a bit later, when I am really and truly hungry (or after my workout). I see this as listening to my body, and it works for me. It probably would not work for you!

Oh, this is a very exciting Southern Delicacy to a California girl!

Look at the flecks of cheese!

Note! Please do not misinterpret this post as a call to toss your wonderful bowls of oatmeal out the window.  Most people could not function in this way and I would never, ever suggest this way of living for others. But this is what works for me. You should only ever do what works for YOU!

This could be you at breakfast. But it's not me.
Bottom line: Skipping monetary freebies that are in fact psychologically or physically costly to myself is in fact, priceless.

Q: What about you? What's the best freebie you ever got? Which are ones that work for you? That work against you? Are you a breakfast eater? Anyone else have A Beast living in their abdomen?

I try really, really hard to avoid buffets because the Indian in me fears wasting a good deal. And good food! But you are absolutely right, it isn't free if I feel crappy afterwards.

Happy Thanksgiving Deb. I hope you are having a fabulous time on your trip!

Deb, this post made me chuckle! The beast sounds like it's being controlled with your routine. Afterall, you always look amazingly fit in all your photos, so whatever you are doing is working.

Great post (and more insight into our conversation ;-) Skipping breakfast is working wonderfully for me too as I am not hungry until 11-1p so I just make lunch my first meal (and usually join the family for breakfast at the weekend).

Maybe I am the oddball but I do pretty well around buffets. I don't go to them very often though and it's usually Indian food where I go light on the entrees and heavy the dessert.

When I am in Vegas, I go light on the buffets (I get those little silver cups for sauces and fill them with whatever looks good - kinda of like a Vegas-buffet Thali. And on my last day, I go crazy and have whatever I want in whatever portion size and it seems to balance out just fine!

I totally "get" this. As you know I have issues with food, but also have some money "noise" with regards to wasting food and such. I have a hard enough time with food as it is, let alone with words like "free" and "all you can eat" are thrown in. Yipes. We are fortunate to have such problems though, right?

This could not have come at a more perfect time. I'm about to leave for a 7 day vacation, all inclusive resort. I'm scared of all the food options that i would not normally eat due to the binges that would follow in a normally at home. I have a protien smoothie everyday, I'm not a big eggs/toast person anyways bc that means butter and salt...but my smoothies will be out of reach. Perhaps a yogurt berry one, no protien ( will bring and add) and it will probably be sweeten, I still think i will try that and keep my breakfest the same, as soon as i eat carbs or anything else im craving all dam day. I do feel hungry in the am nut coffee, gym, smoothie and simple bars as snacks will help tame the beast. MY RULES: NO BREAD,FRIED,BUTTERY,SUGARY FOODS. Sticking to fish dishes, veggies, fruits and may cheat with old school oatmeal that I LOVE AND CANT GET ENOUGH OFF BUT on the last meal before we leave so it doesn't become an addiction on vacation and so im not toally deprived. All cheats and foods i want to eat must wait until the last nights dinner and breakfest. I dont know, some treat to look forward i guess. I hope to stick to this plan. NO binge meals period...I will have to see how i feel as it may be to risky! I will be drinking everyday so it becomes more of a test to stay eatting clean. I will work out at least 4 days if not more. THIS HELP KEEP ME ON TRACK. Im truly going to take this vacation to a different place, on I've never done the past. I hate the food addictions, weight gain during vactions that I actually avoid vactions and feel the stress of weight gain and out of control feelings. Wish me luck! instead of 10lbs in a week im ok with 2-3 that will come off as soon as i return.

Yes, there really is no such thing as "free food." Having issues with portion control, I stay away from buffets...

It's interesting that not eating a "real breakfast" works so well for you. A few summers ago, I ate nothing but fruit in the morning, and I felt great. But I also had a much slower schedule and taught a lot less than now.

These days I leave the house early and can't really eat until much later, so I need a pretty substantial breakfast. Plus, I eat little for dinner, so I'm actually quite hungry in the morning.

I'm not a breakfast eater either. Just feels like it slows me down no matter what I eat?!?! I remember an old aunt telling me how she would only eat fruit until mid-day. On the other hand, I've also heard to "Eat like a king at breakfast, a prince at lunch and pauper for dinner." but I think that is more appropriate for people who do manual labor of some sort each day.

Plus when I was dancing I had to eat really lightly all day or else I felt like a ton of bricks.

Love buffets though...but I'm good at resisting and they always have the best fruit and veggies. Usually they accommodate requests pretty well too.

On the bright side...yay for free vacations in fancy locales (:

Me again....forgot to mention...my main issue with buffets is that I tend to want to "stash" some for later and the fact that so much food gets wasted.

Just wish they would donate it or invite local shelter residents to share but I guess that's not feasible on a boat (: Just hate to see all that food just get tossed. Geez...at least maybe they could compost it and donate it to a garden center...(:

damn you derek and your ability to eat chocolate muffins at midnight and not gain a bit. gahhh i too gain 12lbs when i watch my brother house two huge blueberry muffins every morning. they're free because my mom bought them but most certainly would cost me in having to buy new pants haha

Ha! You know how I feel about this - and I well know that beast that I refuse to awaken so early. ;)

The best deal I've gotten? Hmm, I try to score deals all the time as much as I can, but recently I had coupons for some bodywashes which made them free after sale/coupons. I was excited - doesn't take much here for cheap charlie!
I hope you're having a fantabulous time and can't wait to hear all about it!

I love deals. Who doesn't? You always feel like you're the winner. Though it isn't always the case.

I eat entirely different from you, but I also dislike breakfast. Probably because my biggest meal is the one right before I tuck into bed.

I've never really liked buffets...somehow it takes the thrill out of dining. And the quality isn't as good. My house kitchen has a better buffet. :-/

Ameena- Speaking of Indian: Indian buffets can be SOOoooo yummmy!

Fit Flosser- thank you :-)

Michelle- I found it very ironic that we were experiencing much the same feelings about the breakfast issue. And it made me feel less 'odd' :-) I'm OK around buffets at lunch and dinner. Just not breakfast.

Lara- yes, as I mentioned: a good 'problem' to have. :-) and I'm grateful.

Deb (Smoothie Girl Eats Too) said...

Tam- oh good- at least you know what works for you!

Anonymous- I wish you all the luck for a great trip- please report back! I know how anxiety can creep in while you're supposed to be having a blast on vacation. It's not fun. I hope you find a happy balance for a great trip that doesn't derail your goals!

Andrea- Interesting that you mention your light dinner. I was always very hungry upon awakening when I had very light (ie salad with protein) dinners. When I began eating what I truly want for early dinner, I find that I no longer wake up hungry and I can go about my business for hours without thinking about food much. I do 'force' myself to have part of a smoothie after my workout though "to replenish the glycogen stores" supposedly :-?

Deb (Smoothie Girl Eats Too) said...

McIntosh- Yes, I've heard the kind/prince/pauper thing and it totally doesn't work for me. I also remember talking to my (normal eating) Dad about this and he said that he was equally hungry for lunch whether or not he ate breakfast. (Like me).

I hear you on the wasting- it kinda kills me to see all the food they toss (same with airlines).

And PS. our vacations are sadly not free, just the breakfast on occasion. :-)

Julie- Yes, darn Derek and your brother!

Missy- Our Beasts must know each other :-)

Sophia- right- having a larger meal at the end of the day seems to keep the Beast quiet through the morning hours. I much prefer a sit down meal, but as I said, we're lucky to have such problems.

lol "frugalista" love that term! dude, i was laughing at how many disclaimers you had throughout the post--especially the tossing bowls of beloved oatmeal one. you crack me up! but yes--i am with you. "all inclusive" seems to be THE COOLEST THING for my bosses when we take our trip.. and when i don't LOAD UP like they do, they just don't get it. i am with you.. it may be free, but it's not FREE. love you!!!!

I totally relate to this! I eat either a smoothie or protein bar/muffin for breakfast every day. If I eat more, I starve all day long. I try to stick to my guns on trips - luckily, I don't like most breakfast foods (and the ones I do, like cheese grits and waffles, I have for dinner - we do breakfast for dinner at least once a week!) People always say you must eat breakfast, but I only find that to be true if I eat lightly.

Deb (Smoothie Girl Eats Too) said...

Stitchy- You have reminded me that I really should make breakfast for dinner as I find that I do have oat envy when I see all those lovely 400 calorie oatmeal bowls with their toppings. I just can't do it for breakfast without disastrous consequences!!
