I am SO sore. I honestly can barely comb my hair. This is after just three sets of 15-20 “negative” pushups. Haven’t heard of “Negative-repetitions” or “Negatives?” Well, I’ll try to explain it. Then you can watch a short video I made as a demo.
What is a “Negative” Rep?
Without getting too technobabble-y on you, most weight-lifting moves focus on the ‘concentric’ movement, which means that the main working muscle shortens when you lift the weight. A “negative rep” concentrates on the “eccentric” movement, or the muscle-lengthening direction. It tends to be done quite a bit slower, and with control (that’s the hard part) and can often utilize more weight than you are used to lifting for that move.
In fact, it’s not uncommon for muscle-heads to help spot each other while performing “negatives” because the weight they can use is too heavy to manage the concentric movement alone. You can satisfy your bodybuilding-lurker curiosity by perusing this feed about ‘negatives.’ While grunting in front of your laptop is encouraged, you do not have to be an aspiring body-builder to benefit from ‘negatives.’
Here’s an example: Bicep curls. You would consider the “up” motion to be the normal “working” direction, right? (And the resting/recovering motion to be ‘down’). With a ‘negative,’ it’s the opposite: you get the weights to the ‘up’ position any way you can, but then you really concentrate on slowly, SLOWLY lowering the weight, making the “down” movement the ‘working’ direction. This is very different to the normal way of lifting! And your muscles know it. Apparently, ‘negatives’ have the effect of muscle-growth, as well as increased strength.
Back to my inability to coif… I am currently barely able to raise a brush to my hair because I’m sore in my:
- anterior deltoids (front part of shoulder)
- middle deltoids (side part of shoulder)
- tricep (back of the arm)
- ‘lats’ (your upper back muscles on the sides of your scapula)
- pectorals (aka your chesticles)
….All this from ONE exercise. Luckily I LOVE being sore after a weight-training session.
Here’s the video: Forgive my impromptu ending. It just proves that I’m a goofball.
How to do a Negative Pushup: the video version:
How to do a “Negative” Pushup: the written version.
First of all, the good news: you don’t have to Push Up at all! I have torn rotator cuff tendons and I can’t do more than a few ‘normal’ pushups at once. Performing ‘negatives’ is one of the best ways to really work all the areas that would otherwise go unloved due to my injury.
- Get to a plank position any which way (lie, cheat, steal)
- Lower yourself very, very slowly - with control - to the ground (at first, you will simply plummet to earth, but you’ will get better & stronger with practice)
- To really hit your triceps, keep your elbows near your ribcage, rather than splayed out.
- Repeat Step 1.
- If you are new to this move, perform 5-10 repetitions. Advanced trainees can go for 20 or so.
- If you are feeling spunky, repeat above sequence two to three times.
- Style your hair and sleep on it carefully because it might be days before this is once again possible.
Yoginis: Ever wonder why your chest, triceps and deltoids are so sore after a hard-core yoga class with a bunch of Chaturangas? It’s because you are doing a bagillion negative ‘tricep pushups.’
Speaking of yoga, I made a video for Lindsay over at Lindsay’s List for her Tuesday Trainer series. You can check it out here. You’ll want to scroll back through her other TT posts too - they are informative and good fun!
Q: Have you ever tried “Negatives?” Yoginis: how about those chaturangas? Do you like feeling sore after a good weight training session?
By the way, I apologize to those of you who have tried to leave comments on my blog, but couldn’t! I have no idea why Blogger is acting up this time, nor why some people can leave comments and others can not!

Great idea for working with injuries! Plus, love the "roll" at the end.
I love negative push-ups! My yoga instructor always tortures me with them. By the way, you are looking really buff, Deb. Well done!
I don't have time to do my hair anyway so I'm going to give these a try! I love any workout move I can get results from in a short period of time. Not too much downtime these days!
negative pushup are killer. LEave me sore, esepcially after yoga. Can i request more SGET (smoothie girl eats too)videos? I love them, especially the roll at the end.
:)

Oh! What an afternoon delight--a video of deb! Love it. So I had never done a negative before, but my chest workout of Jamie Eason's plan called for it.. and luckily I had Marshall at the gym on that specific day because it could NOT have been done without him. It called for a barbell chest press negative set, so we loaded the barbell up with plate after plate until it was so heavy that it was literally falling on my chest. MAN was I sore afterward! I will have to try this method, as it's a negative you can do on your own without a spotter. Great post, m'love! Bangs look great!
Allie- I usually find a way to work around all of my injuries :-)
FitFlosser- thank you!
Graze- I need to catch up on your blog but CONGRATS on your baby!! <3
Lindsay- thanks and btw I'm super sore from James' glute workout- tell him thanks!
Janetha- OMG that's hilarious- I had no idea you were doing negatives with JE. I linked you b/c you're a musclehead :->
I can't do a regular push up, nevermind a negative push up. You look fabulous in this video Deb! Love the cool pillow by the way.
I think I love you more now after seeing how awesome the end of that video was!! ;) You're HOT, Deb!
Yay love um and loving ya arms still!!!!! x x x
oh negative push-ups are hard, but we love them. ok maybe we are crazy like that. and yes we love to feel a little sore after we workout hard. guess that shows us we pushed ourselves hard. :)
Ameena- Negatives are easier than regular pushups even though they make you more sore. It's weird but that's how it is! You could do these easily with a little practice, no problem.
Linds- thank you ;-)
Tam- thank you- I bet you do your share of negatives with your Bikram!
Pure- I feel like I didn't work out hard enough if I don't get sore :-P
Thanks for posting this- I am going to try these tomorrow. I might not be thanking you then, apparently, but cursing you instead. :)
And also- you're so beautiful! And the ending was cute!
I've heard of negatives but have never had them explained. This is great...I have such a tough time with push ups! I don't have any tears or anything, but somehow, over the years my right rotator cuff has gotten messed up...I can't even reach to put my right forearm on my lower back like I can with my left. Falling apart already and I'm only in my 20's! :(
I LOVE being sore after a workout, especially when it's a circuit that I've made up myself! Now I'll complain about it to anyone who will listen, but that's just the fun part! ;)
hot video mama. i'm lovin' the vibe of that great britain pillow back there. haha you look like a sex kitten and the pillow is so ginger spice
Lauren- yes you might be cursing me and I'm blushing on the rest of your comment: thank you.
Heather. I've been falling apart since my 20s :-)
Julie- haha thank you. You made me laugh with 'ginger spice'.
Finally...maybe a push up I can actually do and my own "personal trainer" to show me how...
You look awesome and your hair is perfect?!?!?!
Two quick questions:
1. Where was Ellie's cameo? (:
2. What's with pants with words or pictures on the butt? Just kidding but I just don't get it (:
PS. Comment problem solved obviously. It was a security feature that I just added to my browser and it didn't seem to approve of my leaving long annoying comments on your blog. But alas, I'm back.....

This video makes me miss you! I've been trying to go to vinyasa yoga classes 2-3 times a week (if I'm honest I am barely making it twice a week), and those are a killer. My triceps need them badly though, so I power through.
We have that same Union Jack pillow :) We just bought it on our recent UK trip from John Lewis!
McIntosh- yay your commenting is working now! And I'm not sure what's up with the patterns on the butt: this is the only pair I own and I like it b/c it's supposed to look like a tattoo and I have no real ones to show off :-)
Lara- YES John Lewis! That's where we got it- thanks for jarring our memory!! Love that it's kind of purple!
Dude, you look hot in this video my friend! I am going to attempt a negative push up now. It looks hard. I really struggle with regular push ups though so I wonder if these would be a little easier. I'm a sucker for moves that make me sore, gotta love that feeling.
I would fall securely in the "plummeting to the earth" category. I can't do a regular push up to save my life.
You look so glamorous in this video! I need to get back to working out...sorta fell off the working out wagon after my summer vacation. (PS - I have a hell of a time trying to leave comments on here too)
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!
You're so pretty!!!! I don't really use negatives except for pull-ups. That was how I got strong enough to do them on my own. Although I'm not sure I can do them any more since I've not been practicing them.
