Who needs Starbucks?
The expensive way to achieve fabulous milk foam is to invest about $100 and buy an Nespresso Aeroccino foamer. The cheapest way is to spend less than $5 at Ikea on their frother. I have had wildly variable results with the Ikea frother: sometimes mindblowing foam, sometimes no foam at all. When my Aeroccino died, I wanted to see if I could make do without buying another one and it turns out I can!
Bust out your blender. It does not need to be a fancy one. Mine cost $20 at Target- nothing fancy here. Once I decided that I loved this Back To Basics Blender, I hunted it down on Amazon and bought the set that has different containers (big, small) and blades (for grinding coffee and nuts). I just spied it for $35 on the above Amazon link: a good deal in my opinion. I've had mine for years and it's a little trooper.
Part of the Back to Basics Blender Express set
Flat blade for grinding coffee, nuts and as luck would have it, for making foam
Big fluffy foam made with the flat blade and icy cold milk
So thick it almost needs help getting onto the coffee
The best foam is achieved by using a flat blade if you have one, although the standard shaped blade (four-pronged) works too. You just need to make sure that you have enough milk in the container to cover the blades while it blends. Ideally, you don't want the milk bouncing up and down- you'll know what I mean when you see it.
The next trick is to use very cold milk or even partially defrosted frozen milk cubes (totally optional). This isn't such the pain that you might think. Simply freeze some milk cubes (I have all types of cubes of milk in my freezer in ziplocks at all times to add to smoothies). Grab a handful of milk cubes and put them in your blender container (or any container) and leave in fridge overnight. By the morning, some of the milk will be defrosted. When you've finished with your foam for the day, add some more cubes and let them sit in fridge again. Note: almond/coconut milk does NOT fluff up like cow's milk does. Not sure on soy milk, as I haven't tried it.
This is the blade on most regular blenders- it works, but perhaps not quite as well
Regular blades produce bubbly milk and some foam (but not as much thicker foam as a flat blade produces)
Fluff from a regular blender blade- foam is pretty good.
Still festive even if the foam isn't huge.
And the finishing touch: a sprinkle of sweetened cocoa on top. I have a container on-hand with cocoa and stevia powder already mixed together.
Cocoa powder with stevia- at the ready.
Sweet cocoa atop milk foamy coffee
However, in my opinion, the most important part of the morning coffee routine, is having someone special with whom to share it:
Ellie is the head barista in our house.
Q: Do you drink coffee? Like foam? Do you freeze cubes (of anything? What?) What is on your "I'm treating myself" list?

I am not much of a coffee drinker...I'm too high strung already so the caffeine really puts me over the edge. But I do love to drink the foam off of Ali's lattes. Love it!
Have you tried Thrifty's Chocolate Brownie ice cream? It used to be my favorite!
I very much so drink coffee, love it. But I guess I'm a country bumpkin because ive never had foamed milk in mine. Never had heard of it til I started reading blogs and saw these "frothers". I'm just not real classy I guess ;).
Yes I freeze my almond milk in cubes. I also freeze my pumpkin in cubes so my pumpkin pie smoothie will be extra thick, concentrated and cold. I hate adding alot of ice, it waters it down. So frozen pumpkin helps. I've also frozen carrot baby food to blend. I suppose I could buy frozen carrots (duh moment for me).
Loving that Ellie - the Barista Diva! She's such a sweetheart!
Missy/Missle
Love the post...I am not a big maker of foam at home b/c it seems to just spray...everywhere unless I want to dirty up my Krups mega machine and do it that way. But the little handheld foaming tools are more joke than tool for me. Love your blender tip!
Ameena! Your comment prompted me to stop in to Rite Aid after the gym as I needed to replenish my glycogen stores & was 2 hrs from a real meal. The verdict? Holy moly goooooood!
Missy- I knew you were a "cuber" :-)
Averie- yah I can't stand those frothers attached to coffee machines- huge mess!
Yes, I love coffee, but I now drink only one cup per day. Well, most days. There are 2-cups-a-day days...
I actually don't like foam on my coffee, but it looks very fancy!
I love the idea to freeze milk cubes! I'll do that now!!!
yay i love your foamy tutorial! i have that blade with my bullet and haven't used it. i need to foam it up this weekend. hmmmm treating myself: pedicures, ice cream (none of this fro yo business), the real deal mexican food and kombucha (it's expensive!)
also, i love coffee and don't freeze cubes of anything but i have been meaning to make the peanut flour candies.
I love coffee and coffee-flavored anything. Though my morning cup has been icky due to trying to suffer through a huge bin of Folgers before I get something better (i.e. more expensive). Also missing my French press which I think is packed away in my sister's attic after my last move.
Black for me(weaned off Sweet n Low finally) though I whipped up some wicked foam when I was a barista (:
I freeze everything though rarely in trays so it ends up kind of funky.
Treating myself?.....hmmmm...now I want a good cuppa coffee.
Andrea- I can't stand to throw anything away so any milk (almond, regular, coconut) that would otherwise go bad find a new life in cubes.
Janetha- yeah, ice cream always trumps fro yo for desireability!
McIntosh- the cubes make it easy to store in ziplock bags. And congrats on having your coffee black- I need it sweet and with foam or a little milk- I've tried to wean and I just can't (or don't want to!)
i use to love the foam with my coffee! i even bough an espresso maker that has a steamer to make foam. but i do not even drink lattes, just black coffee, haha, crazy how my tastebuds change
I used to work in a coffee bar when I lived in NYC for a summer. It was before the days of almond milk, so we used soy and it did foam nicely. But any which way, I don't love foam. I know, I'm so weird. I don't even love coffee so that would exlain it. I DO like whipped cream in hot chocolate though! Or even whipped cream by itself. From can to mouth.
mmm foam. I used to have a frother and I stupidly tossed thinking I'd never use it. So annoying.
I love extra foamy cappuccinos. I want one when it starts cooling down again.
On my "I'm treating myself" list...sweet potato fries and coconut milk ice cream. YUM
these are great ideas. i love it. i want to foam. i wish i had extra time in the morning to foam. maybe i should suggest getting a blender in the office and we could foam haha. let's foam it co-workers is what i would say
also i have my very own shaker that is stevia, cocoa & cinnamon. it's life changing.
Pure2Raw- lucky you that your tastebuds changed!
Eden- I didn't know you were a barista in a previous life!
Amanda Yes I'm with you on the sweet potato fries. I've never had coconut milk ice cream- sounds delicious!
Julie- takes me about 45 seconds. Sometimes a whole minute if I go crazy. And I do it while I am getting my cup and pouring the coffee it! :-) It's the blender that is the necessary part- most offices aren't too cool on those I think.
I love coffee. Unfortunately, I'm very caffeine sensitive so I have to be careful. Foam is pretty but I prefer my coffee black and thick.
I want to kiss Ellie. So cute!
Thank you so much for this post! My Nespresso Aeroccino foamer crapped out on me a couple weeks ago and I haven't been able to bring myself to spend the money on another one. I miss my frothed milk EVERY morning!!! I'll try my regular mixer, but I might also look into a small one like the one you posted. Thanks again!!!!
Newbie here :)
I shared a post on using my cheap-o bullet magic blender (a gift) to make at home milk foam for my home made pumpkin spice latte. So so good :D
Jenn- I'll kiss Ellie for you <3
Anon- Thank you for the comment. What's with the crappy nespressos crapping out? Your regular mixer will absolutely work. Just be sure to use cold milk and cover the blades.
Kiran- welcome and thank you for leading me to your delish pumpkin spice latte recipe (I did search for it, but it was worth it). And here I thought I had an original idea about making foam in a blender :-> The magic bullet is the fraternal twin to the back-to-basics blender express. I adore mine and abuse it and it refuses to die!
Love coffee and LOVE foam. I never thought to make it with cold milk though or in a blender. I'm going to have to try this with my Magic Bullet. I have a little handheld frother that I love. :) Thanks for the post. Now I'm off to try it. Could always use a reason to have some more coffee. he he!
OMG this is absolute genius! I only have the normal blade but I'll try it anyway. And the thing about freezing milk in ice cube trays and putting them in ziploc bags, omg, you blow me away. Going to do that right after work, thanks for the endless ingeniousness!
Stuft- your magic bullet will work a treat!
Thoa- thank you but really, it's not ingeniousness at work, it's frugality :-)
