Yoga Mat Folding: A Review

Do I have any yogini readers out there?  Has anyone ever tried 'power yoga' or Bikram or Ashthanga yoga?  Don't you just love the fact that you sweat buckets onto the floor?  Just think of all those toxins you are releasing!  Some popular classes can even have dozens of people, or more.  I often observe staff whipping around the floor with a huge industrial-sized mop after each class.  Mind you, they are not using bleach or cleaner...they are just combining everyone's sweat and spreading it around.  Less of a slip hazard than puddles I presume?

Now I'd like you to do something just for fun.  Go into the studio just after the last class let out and lay on the floor with your bare skin.  You can even smush your face onto the floor if you wish.  Why would I ask you to do that? Because if you are simply rolling your yoga mat after each class, then you are pretty much doing this, every time you step on your mat.  Why?  Because when you roll the mat, the dirty underside (sweat, toxins, bacteria, spirochetes, prions, goodness knows what else) come into contact with the clean side of the mat that your body & face will touch.  Yucky.

This photo from my original yoga-mat-folding post two years ago amuses me.  First, I felt the need to share my leopard yoga bag with my readers.  Second, my hair was about a foot shorter than it is now. Finally, I'm wearing the same dress that Ellie decided to eat last week.

2009: Short hair and intact dress

2011: RIP cute dress.  Ellie in background, exhausted and obviously innocent. (Hairy arm, not mine)
(I probably should give her a time-out or at least revoke her blogging privileges but I guess I'm just a sucker for a pretty face)

Back to the topic at hand...

Yoga mat Folding 101A:

  1. Fold mat in HALF!! I will repeat this part: Fold mat in HALF!
  2. NOW roll mat as usual. See how easy that is?
Q:  Do you practice yoga? Do your otherwise perfect animals or children destroy your personal possessions?

Now on to something really important...

The Great Fundraising Act is in full force! Hundreds of healthy living/food bloggers are banding together to donate items to auction to supplement our fellow blogger, Susan's cancer fund.

For full details on Susan's story and a list of some of the loot for sale, please go to Meals and Moves. This bake sale/auction includes writers of some of the 'biggest' blogs out there, as well as small but fabulous blogs.  Anyone can buy any of the auctioned items, so please consider buying some great stuff. You can also help by donating items to the auction.  If you have a specialty that you make and can ship, please leave Janetha a message and she'll give you the details.

I personally will be donating some home-made spiced hazelnut butter and my very own protein muffin mix (all you need to do is add egg whites and pumpkin or other starchy carb!) Mr. SmoothieGirl aka Derek, will be donating a weekend at the Universal Studios Sheraton (breakfast/parking included) and two passes to Universal Studios Tours (California).  Also on offer:  a weekend shopping expedition to the Camarillo outlets in southern California, two nights at the Courtyard Marriott Camarillo, $50 dinner voucher at a local Mexican restaurant, $50 spending money at the outlets and a day trip to an island off the coast!  I'll provide more details next week!

    Lynn- oh goodie!

Averie- but do you notice that the only thing I kept was the photo and the actual how-to? I changed all the text as I couldn't stand reposting that drivel!

I think this is one of the first things I ever learned from you (and there have been many!): I've been folding my mat this way ever since! Love it!! And I'm so excited for Susan's auction - I hope it raises lots of $$ for her!

How....HOW had that never occurred to me before?
    I feel like a dolt.

I'm no germaphobe...I probably would smoosh my face in the floor if I were tired enough....but I do like a clean mat! Thanks!!!

Your mix will get lots of high bids a la you 16 min of fame for it!
And as for Mr. SmoothieGirl, I'm sure that'll get high ones too.
No one wants my slightly calorific white chocolate balsamic blueberry fudge. For one, I touched it, two its got more calories than a rice cake.
hmmm maybe I should offer my eating disorder counseling services???

Oh and I like to "fluff and fold" my yoga mat.

A Camarillo outlet package...I love it!

I only use my yoga mat at home so I think I am safe from germs that are not my own but...well said. I can't imagine how many germs a yoga studio's floor has!!

I started reading this post and thought Deb just posted about how to fold up a yoga mat...that was 2 years ago?!? Wow.

I am lovin' your hair nowadays. Bangs and length look good on you. :)

Love that you can make "muffin mix" with your recipe. I need to remember that one for the road!

Ive never done yoga - but it's a good thing to know in case I do!
Wow - how generous of you guys to donate such wonderful prizes! I know that means SO much to Susan. I am looking forward to bidding but will probably have to donate since I am sure I will be out-bid. Luckily Ebay has prepared me for being outbid, ha! I only wish I had a specialty or something unique and special to donate. I can't wait to see the outcome - I know it will be above all expectations!

And I would totally bid on Eden's fudge simply BECAUSE she touched it! ;)ha ha ha

I'm a dum dum because as I was reading this I was imagining how to fold it (before I got to your directions) to avoid the nasty side and I couldn't figure it out for the life of me!

What great donations to Susan's fundraiser. I can vouch for the Camarillo outlets as a fun place to spend the day!

What I really wish I could do is fly Susan here to LA and pamper her rotten. :-(

I have a yoga mat, but I've never done yoga in my life. I use it to lie on my belly and read while eating chocolate.

I do practice yoga and this post is awesome. Such a good idea to fold first then roll. My studio offers bottles of sanitizer for mats which is a nice plus too, but I'm definitely going to try the rolling trick!

I do yoga at home, so folding the mat involves shoving it in the hallway closet. Considering it's 90 degrees this week and I don't have air, every session is Bikram. It's lovely.

Anyway, your donations are spectacular and generous and everything you usually are. I think you and Eden should donate babysitting me for a weekend out in California and then not let anyone bid on it except me. For Susan, I would make a trip out there ;)

Seriously though, so amazing. It's going to be a huge success, unlike my attempts to stay cool.
