Easy Sun-brewed pickles: the Cheap, Lazy Girl's version

I love pickles. But not with ice cream because I've never been pregnant. I don't love shelling out big bucks just for one lousy jar of pickles. So thanks to either Janetha & Eden's suggestion from when they visited last month, I do the next best thing: I buy the lousy jar, eat those pickles and then I make my own pickles from fresh cucumbers, using juices from that original jar.

Method:
  1. Buy lousy jar of pickles (actually make sure they are super yummy- I love Claussen)
  2. Buy fresh cucumbers. Organic, if you feel so inclined.
  3. Eat store bought pickles but save the juice!
  4. Cut or slice your cucumber and put into jar of juice.
  5. Let sit outside in the sun for day(s)
  6. Refrigerate
  7. Eat
  8. If eating with ice cream, call your partner to let him know that you must be pregnant.
Cut cucumbers

I cut wedges.  You can cut slices or crinkle cuts or spirals (kidding on the spirals)

Fill jar with fresh cucumbers

Put in the sun for a day or more.
If necessary, hire a pickle slave to ensure maximum sunlight exposure

This takes great skill

"Do not attempt at home.  Professional on a closed course"

Once soaked for a day or so, place in fridge

I use the same jar until there isn't enough juice left to make another batch.  If you are dying to know more about different techniques for making pickles, please click here.  The site discusses sterilizing jars and all sorts of stuff that I couldn't be bothered to do.  I'll bet that it's far more information than you'll ever need.  Unless of course, you need a topping for your ice cream.

Q:  Have you ever made pickles?  If you were pregnant:  did you really crave pickles and ice cream?  Or is that an urban legend?

Have you ever made pickles? = yes on my countertop, blogged about it a year or so ago. Spinoff on Ani Phyo the raw chef's recipe. So easy.

If you were pregnant: did you really crave pickles and ice cream? = no, not at all. It sounds like heartburn city with all that acid at a time in life where heartburn is typically rampant already!

Love your sun pickle recipe Deb!

Wow, that is a great idea! We are pickle lovers. I make my own using a recipe from Nourishing Traditions.

I love this! I am a fan of pickles but rarely buy them anymore. I can go through a jar in a week or so!

Love the pickle slave.

Pickles and ice cream have been "cravings" yes, but NEVER together!!

Ameena said...

I have never made pickles and while I love them I never craved them when I was pregnant. When I was pregnant the only thing I craved was to not be pregnant anymore!

wow you're good deb! i suck at pickles because it's always like 'oh i'm totally craving pickles!" and then i buy an entire friggn jar, eat one pickle and my craving just gets kicked for a bunch of months so the huge jar just sits in the fridge. retarded i know. i should just do it the right way and buy a giant pickle from the deli (which is the best kind ever) and eat it, and move on!

Averie- Oh, I need to check your post!

Beth- Nourishing Traditions? Something else to check out.

Amanda- A week? When I get on a roll, I can tear through one in a couple of days!

Graze- You must be getting close!

Ameena-haha- funny!

Julie- ONE pickle? That's like eating ONE french fry? How can you do that?

Lindsay- oh yes! It's been 115 here. Actually, it's cool today: only 100. Might need to bust out my sweater :-)

It most definitely was not me! I was amazed at how easy it is to make pickles! All thanks to you and Eden, our pickle slave. I am forever in your debt :)

k, wanna hear something most people will think is gross?
i've done the same thing w/ hardboiled eggs in leftover pickle juice (i also add jalapeno slices for a kick)!
what can i say? i love pickled eggs!

I've never made pickles. Somehow it always sounded "complicated" to me... But your way sounds easy enough for me to try! :)

And I didn't crave pickles and ice cream when I was pregnant, but I ate a big piece of cheese topped with chocolate ice cream (and I hated chocolate back then) the day before the teenager was born almost twenty years ago...

WHAAAAT?? this idea is genius. except now I won't be able to make my vodka pickle juice cocktails...

it's only about 70 here - can I sit there with a hair dryer pointed at the pickle jar??

UGH!!!! how dare you put a picture of my gams on display like that!
(I kid, relax)

I love pickles, but I do associate it with anorexics since most are so happy some jars says it has no calories. So I gladly pair it with ice cream.
Then again, I am apparently carrying Janetha's baby...

Julie: HOW THE EFF DOES ONE EAT ONE PICKLE?! write a manual!

I've never liked pickles, nor did I crave them when I was pregnant. Not even with ice cream. The last 2 months I was pregnant, everything had to have hot sauce of some kind on it (Buffalo, Tabasco, etc.)...I probably would've eaten pickles with hot sauce on them. Possibly even ice cream with hot sauce.

Janetha- OK so it was Eden. I couldn't remember.

Teabag: NOt gross at ALL! I get pickled eggs every time I go to Philippes downtown-it's a different thing b/c the eggs are bright pink, but I'll try it with pickle juice! Thanks.

Kristina- Oh, I'd like to try me one of your cocktails.

Andrea- cheese & chocolate ice cream I'll take it.

Eden- if I had gams as nice as yours I'd have a blog devoted to them alone.

Rachel- you reminded me, I'm out of Frank's :-)

I do this all the time...I love my bath even more as I am all about the half-sours. I think we're safe. Never got sick.

Jenn (GH) said...

I've made lacto-fermented pickles. I don't think I used the best kind of cucumbers though because they were a bit smushy.

I craved ice cream all the time when I was pregnant. And McD's filet-O-fish but don't tell anyone. ;-)

Why did I know about this method. Love it - thanks to you and your pickle muses Deb! :)

Craved pickles and ice-cream like crazy but never together.

Brilliant...I crave pickles AND ice cream all the time and thankfully I'm not pregnant nor ever was (or probably ever will be for that matter!).

I could see doing this with lots of other veggies and even fruit...pickled watermelon anyone? Plus I'm Russian so we pickle everything which I love even pickled herring which is a staple. Keeps things from spoiling (:

Holley @ Lunges and Lashes said...

super smart to just reuse the juice! i love home made pickles, sometimes my mom will make them. they are so much better than the store!

Deb (Smoothie Girl Eats Too) said...

Tam- I go through phases. When I rediscover pickles, I wonder why I ever forgot about them. I'm not sure that you can get really good Jewish Deli pickles in the UK??

Fitandfortysomething: I take none of the credit- turns out it was all Eden.

Missy- half sours? I need to DM you!

Jenn- Filet o fish still makes me all tingly all over. And I was never pregnant.

Heabs- pickle muses- love that!

McIntosh- wow have you ever really pickled watermelon? I have tried pickled turnips from the middle eastern joint and they are pretty yummy too. (they are bright pink though??)

Holley- Well, by using a juice that you already know you like, it takes all the thinking out of the equation! :-)

Re: Pickling watermelon....I've heard of pickled watermelon rind. It's a Southern thing I think. That and okra which I find slimy and gross.

Pickled beets are awesomely addictive (:
