Savory Trifle: The sashimi version

The other day I got Hungry Girl's Newsletter in my inbox.  Something caught my eye...a savory trifle! I forwarded the recipe to two people:  one I thought would love it (Eden of Eden's Eats), and the other I thought would hate it (Derek of SmoothieGirlHusbandFame).

Even though Derek loves his grandmother's REAL and traditional English Sherry Trifle recipe, he was shockingly supportive of this crazy idea of putting savory ingredients into a trifle bowl.

Eden of course, was not just supportive, but she said "Hey, let's make one tomorrow!"  So she came over for lunch and we went to town throwing pretty much everything from the fridge into this trifle.

In the mix:
  • Sauteed mushrooms
  • Shredded kabocha squash
  • Cauliflower "rice" aka grated into teeny weeny bits
  • Lettuces- assorted, chopped
  • Sliced persian cucumbers
  • Microwaved chopped collard greens
  • Sashimi pieces
  • Sliced avocado
  • Shredded nori sheets for garnish.
Method:
  • Layer each item and make it look really pretty before your cat comes to sniff it.
  • Laugh at your cat as she walks away with nori sheet strips caught in her whiskers.
  • Sit down at the table with your food art.
  • Look at the enormous pile of food in front of you and discuss with your dining partner the fact that you'll surely eat only a fraction of it.
  • Devour the entire trifle.
  • Feel lucky if you are hungry for dinner, many hours later.
I see this as the love-child of a Hugh Jass salad and a protein-packed stirfry, only prettier.  Heckyeah for cross-breeding.

I'm super BUTT hurt that I was not invited! :-(

But I suppose it's a good thing because I would grab that trifle and run off so that I can have it all to myself. It's gorgeous!!

Love layered things...food, clothes, etc. What to add? To yours nothing else but other ideas for layers: tomato tartare, baba ghanoush, egg whites and so much more.

Must try the cauliflower-ed rice too.

Great kitty pics and captions as always. Samantha as quality control or "I have seniority so I get first dibs on droppings"?

That is gorgeous! I need a trifle in my life. I would put mashed potatoes, sour cream, cheese, chives, bacon, corn, grilled chicken and carrots in mine. (Real healthy right?)

Or make a layered salad! I've done that before but didn't have the right dish to serve it in. That would be fun too!

Love your trifle. And now I have an uncontrollable feeling that I NEED a trifle bowl RIGHT NOW! The possibilities are endless. It's so pretty. Wonder if I can convince hubby and the toddler to stop by Crate and Barrel after the gym????

Whoa super cool idea! I love trifles and I love sushi, though I think I would be weirded out by eating this. I've never turned down food though :)

My savory trifle would probably be like mexican 7 layer dip...nom nom nom.

Hah! I'm late on commenting on this post! But I have a good reason!

Dear lord Amanda nailed it with her trifle! I say we attempt another savory trifle soon and invite her.

Derek needs to make me a trifle! Maybe even one for loulou because he lurves them too. And yes, I'm sure Derek is reading so I'm not even gonna drop hints I want his trifle, I'm just flat out writing it.

Man I could eat that whole thing easily!! I may would add to this some type of bean like lentils or chickpeas or feta cheese and chicken sprinkled with my favorite Cavenders greek seasoning.
Love the quality control patrol. That freaked my hubby out when we dated - my baby, Sinbad, would lay in my kitchen sink (dry & stainless steel, guess he liked the coolness) and sit on my countertops. My hub is a germ freak and that blew his mind! Of course me and Sinbad would share ice cream or tuna - never bothered me a bit!!

Andrea- you would use that bowl all the time. Wms SOnoma here you come!

Eden- Not that the sashimi one wasn't great and all of the other ones in our future, but yes, Amanda's rocks the house.

Missy- ha- hilarious about Sinbad & your hubby. Samantha has a thing for sinks too. Sleeps in every one we have. I've shared an ice cream cone with my cats. Just for the record though, we are raising Ellie totally differently- she's not allowed on tables or countertops- when we were young 'parents' with Samantha, we didn't know any better! :-)
