Like most people, I go through phases every year where my weight maintanence efforts are easier, and other times that they are harder. Sometimes it's like pulling teeth to keep on track and I feel bitter and annoyed that weight loss maintenance takes so much effort. Other times, I believe that the work involved isn't all that difficult, or at least I'm more willing to do it, sans grumbling. And the results naturally follow.
It seems that the latter half of any year is always a bit tougher for me. We seem to travel a bit more. The weather gets cooler and I can hide under clothes. Then there are the Holidays. Ho-boy the holidays! This year, I quietly noticed a few of my blog-sisters-in-arms expressing frustration with themselves at the same time that I was. And like me, they seem to have 'roped it in' right around the same time that I did...within the last few months. I would guesstimate that my weight changes about 6-12 pounds over the course of the year. Why am I guessing? I do not step on the scale when I'm heavier. When my largest (of several sized) jeans are tight, that's enough negative reinforcement for me, thanks. No need to pour salt on that wound. Wild horses couldn't drag me onto a scale.
So I decided that it might be helpful for me to do a post now, while I'm more 'on track' so that later in the year (when I may be careening out of control?), I can look back and see what worked for me. Hopefully this general list can be of use to others as well.
What's working for me now:
- Listening to my Body: Smoothies for breakfast and occasionally as snacks. (Shocking, I know) I did a video post a few months back extolling the virtues of smoothies for me and I'm sticking to my guns on this one. Let me be clear however: I do not think that breakfast smoothies are the right way for everyone. This is where you need to listen to your own body. Even with all the carby, fatty, crunchy, chewy toppings that I sometimes include, smoothies may not satisfy you for a breakfast 'meal'. As for me: I know that if I eat even the most balanced of breakfasts, I'll be starving all day long. So I listen to my body and give it what it wants: a big, airy, filling breakfast smoothie. Would my soul rather have waffles, eggs, pancakes or chia oats? You bet. But my body wants the smoothie for breakfast and I can feed my soul later.
- Eating big salads, stir-fries or soups with plenty of protein and fats. I like to chew (even with my smoothies) and I like to feel full. I have never had an energy bar, rubbed my belly and announced that I was full. I need to feed myself a good dose of voluminous-lower-calorie whole foods on a regular basis. I used to hate chopping up my veggies for my meals, but now I'm likethis with my chef's knife and I find it oddly therapeutic to chop!
 |
| This is one huge, filling salad |
- Eat at home, or bring your lunch or even (gasp) your dinner when reasonable. I love good food. I really do. I love restaurants and I love to try new flavors and local fare. But this comes with a caloric cost. Given the fact that we travel quite a bit and much of my socializing is often done in restaurants, I try to practice damage control the rest of the time by eating from the fridge. Plus, think of the money I save!
 |
| Meals with friends can involve picnics as well as restaurants (don't be judging on the SuperBigGulp of diet coke: I never said I was perfect) |
- Exercise: Mix it up and listen to my body. I mix up my workout based on what tickles my fancy that day/week/month/year. Lately, I've been on a bit of a stair/jump-roping/walking kick with a few step/dance classes thrown in. I also do various forms of of strength training -like bodyweight lunges & squats- a couple of times a week, but if I can be honest, I could try to do even more than that. I'd guess that I train about 5 days a week right now.
 |
| No gym? No problem. Get creative and just move. |
- Give myself food treats in reasonable doses: I have chocolate, popcorn AND some sort of a frozen desert pretty much every day. This may seem extravagant, but it works for me. I don't have large quantities. Sometimes it's 2 or 4 tiny tootsie roll midgees. But other times it's a hefty three serving bag of popcorn. It just depends on how I'm feeling and what I'm craving. I do realize that some people are more all-or-nothing so they may not be able to have 3 small candies and call it good. These people would probably need to avoid the treats that are problematic. But as someone who can 'do' moderation, this works for me.
 |
| Even in Mexico I had to have my daily frozen treat. |
- Always have access to a snack that is filling and satisfying. Right now, my snack of choice is my microwave Chocolate Protein Muffin. It satisfies the hunger beast and the chocolate cake craving. Win-win. I actually make batches of these (and some modified versions that I have yet to post on the blog...hint, there is zucchini in the mix), freeze them, and take them with me on trips.
- Weigh myself only once every few weeks or so. You would think that I'd be too 'seasoned' to be affected by a stupid arbitrary number on a scale, but then, you'd be wrong. I get seriously bummed out when the scale is not kind, and there is no need for subjecting myself to this sort of torture on a daily or even weekly basis.
- Reduce alcohol. There's just no way around it: alcohol has calories. And it makes you throw caution to the wind and have an extra serving (or two) of something you might not have had sans booze. This can be another reason that the holiday season is rough: more drinking = more eating.
- Track (Don't LIMIT) Calories. Confused? You're wondering why I would bother to count calories yet not restrict them. I have learned that when I fight with my body, my body wins (every time). If I'm standing at the fridge with a growling tummy, you can bet your bottom dollar I'm not going to go to walk away hungry. Somehow, the act of keeping track of calories helps me to make more sensible choices. I go over my calorie 'goal' on a regular basis. But sometimes, I surprise myself by going under it on those (rare) days where my appetite is smaller. In the past I just noted the calories and exercise in a journal, but I currently use Daily Plate and love it to smithereens. It is so easy to use -after the initial learning curve- and it has the largest international database of foods I have ever seen. FoodCalc is also a very useful resource. Check it out.
Please keep in mind that this is a list that works for me, and may be completely useless to you. On the other hand, if anyone gets even one spark of inspiration or an idea, then my work here is done. Now I have a couple of kitties to cuddle and a protein muffin to make.
Q: If you are 'on track' with your healthy goals, what is helping? If you are not on track, what is hurting?

I love this post so much! I love that you see your maintenance as it goes over the course of a year, not just week to week. Very sane.
Tracking is totally working for me even though I'm hardly exercising. Looking at it the way you do, I always get more exercise summer through fall (and I'd be getting more now if it would ever stop raining).
I have totally gone off my smoothies after having the same one for three years straight. I'm soooo freezing on the inside that I have to have something warm now - lately it's been 65 calorie toast with cheese and maybe a hard-boiled egg, with a snack a couple hours later.
You continue to be such an amazing inspiration. Miss you!
It's true, we all fluctuate in weight from season to season...I think it's natural!
Smoothie is not for me because I hate them. Haha. But some people may not like a 6-egg frittata, either. It may give them gas. Smoothie gives me diarrhea.
I like the way you listed simple, straightforward, weight maintenance tips instead of fancy gimmicks. It's really quite a personal thing, but at the same time, with universal truths like eat less, move more. Such a no-brainer, but people make it complicated!
I love smoothies and a key lime smoothie makes me want to cry it sounds so good!
I love big gulps full of diet coke. Oh man.
I've recently decided that in order to lose this extra weight, I need to knock out the weekend drinking. So many extra calories! It's been tough to break this habit though.
Tiffany- I am so impressed that you have done sooooo well without exercise- you DO realize that you will melt away when you start, right? And re. coldness/smoothies: that's why god invented Hot Water Bottles.
Sophia- oh dear, I can understand how you may not embrace the smoothie- I'd be all over your frittata, but for lunch or dinner :-)
Amanda- Oh man is right. Especially where they serve Coke Zero. Holy moly. Yes, sadly the booze is a calorie vortex. booo. :-(
First off, I get a kick that I'm a tag. It made my day.
Second, I think youve come a long way with your weight. And I think youve finally found something that keeps you body healthy without being deprived. Most people (emaciated or overweight) have no clue what works for them. I'm still figuring it out, but getting there....
Third (why am I counting?) that salad is nothing. You have yet to see the size of my salads/stir frys!
Fourth, I think its funny how I once used to eat nothing. Then I'd eat a lot all at once, and now I'm just trying to tame this "beast". I think I need to eat throughout the day, never too much at once (binge beast) and not be tempted to restrict either. And of course, being flexible (pun unintended) with exercise. A little less or none at all some days, maybe a little more other days, but of course, never too much. Thats just boring.
PS What a great photo of the smoothie! Foodgawker worthy!!!
I agree, foodgawker worthy! If a smoothie can make you drool, its a done deal. I like hearing the reality of weight maintenance tips. This is what works for you and you know what, its do-able! I track calories when I think my body is not getting enough. You can usually tell because I am a hormonal beast that wants nothing to do with you, haha!
Cheers!
LC
Eden- ha- I didn't even know what Foodgawker was til we talked about it the other day. The ONLY reason I have that photo and the rest of the series of citrus smoothies was b/c I submitted a post for a canadian food bank and thought I should include some nice photos.
I'm glad that you are sorting out your eating issues and believe it or not, it helps me to hear your story so that I don't go too far one way or the other. I'm trying to remain as balanced as possible while still enjoying life!
Lindsay- hmm. that's almost never been my problem- not getting enough calories! Well, a few yrs ago when I was leaner. But I was also a grouchy beast- ask Derek! :-)
Great post Deb...I love how you drink a Big Gulp with no apologies!
I'm glad that you've been able to find what works for you. Can I suggest that any all people who want to lose weight come to Paris? Aside from bread and butter (which I should be avoiding because of my gluten-issues) there really isn't much to eat here that I like. And when I do find something I like the miniscule portion ensures that I can fit into my jeans with zero problems. :)
Great post! Love your tips. I'm on track right now (pretty much). :) Staying away from added sugars and fats is making all the difference. I'm beating my cravings with banana soft-serve, fruit smoothies with almond butter and dates and giant salads with avocado dressing (no oil!). Love your salad bowl, btw.
This is why I love your blog! You don't post everyday or even on any sort time line as far as I can tell but when you do write it's always well thought out and comment-worthy. Refreshing change from some others that are all quantity over quality...
I love your tips and ability to assess what works for you. Thankfully, for some reason I have gotten saner about it recently. I only weigh myself weekly or so now and have been a bit more forgiving with my exercise. Granted now that the weather has improved and it's actually tolerable for me (as in 65 degrees or above) I know I will have to watch myself since I tend to go overboard and then lose way too much.
Never got obsessed with measuring or counting calories. Actually I hate to keep track and my thinking is too disorganized. Just seem to have a sense of what I take in overall and just stick to what I know. Boring but I'm okay with it.
I REALLY need to get back to smoothie-making though I have no blender....grrrr (only an immersion one and a tiny food processor) but I've got the gums and Torani crack. Must go back and peruse your smoothie tips 'cause I have yet to get it right. Mmmmmm....maybe start with your foodgawker-worthy key lime one? Or the bulle smoothie since I have egg white powder that I have no clue what to do with. HELP! (:
Ameena- yes, teeny portions are definitely key to why the rest of the world is slimmer than the US and the UK. However I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't be as lucky as you are regarding temptations in Paris!
Carrie- you've always been so good about avoiding sugars ever since I met you! Avo dressing sounds yummy!
McIntosh- I don't think that the egg powder is very beneficial to smoothies from a consistency point of view- yes if you're looking for protein. I keep it on hand for some baking and for when I run out of eggs! And you can totally make smoothies in the processor- done it many times: simply: ice, water, protein powder, gums (this takes practice!!), sugarfree fatfree pudding powder, torani, extract flavor of choice. You can always add fruit as well. Do check some of my old recipes and my smoothie 101A post:
http://smoothiegirleatstoo.blogspot.com/2009/08/smoothie-palooza.html
Got the idea about the egg white powder from this smoothie recipe of yours...sounded good and easy (!!!!). Maybe that's a special kind or flavor of protein powder?
http://smoothiegirleatstoo.blogspot.com/2010/02/smoothie-saturdaysunday-bulle-bulle.html
Well I'll try it anyway for kicks...
McIntosh- apologies my friend for not being clear! I used egg white protein powder, NOT egg white powder or powdered egg whites! Very different!! So, instead of whey protein powder, many companies use egg white as a base, but the texture is totttttttally different from powdered egg whites! I think I'll go back in and remove that part from the original post as the whey is as good as the egg based protein powder. Sorry for the confusion!
Answer: Don't study abroad if the location is London, England. The food's fantastic, despite stereotype. Problem is it's too good. Heh, this will be Summer of the Treadmill.
I love your tricks! I totally agree with the salad/stirfry. Sometimes I just want to feel full. My brain is not amused by caloric density! Sometimes it's way happier with a big bowl of steamed veggies with nifty meats and condiments. I've been missing my Vita terribly. Our reunion will be dripping with protein ice cream.
You travel more than anyone else I know. Traveling and staying on track (for me) is HARD, so I really admire that you stay in the shape that you do! You really do know what works best for you and I really appreciate the fact that you use what you know to your advantage and get your butt into gear when needs be. You are my role model :) Also, I love that you are able to hyperlink Ellie's name... haha.. she is so tech savvy. I can't wait to try your PBJ smoothie in May!
I'm doing lots of Bikram and circuits it seems to be working so I'm sticking with it! I'm also trying not to snack as much.....trying!
Your words make sense to me love this post and that muffin needs to be mine!
Hope your well pretty lady x x
DamnFreshman- YOU ARE RIGHT!! British food is amazing- and don't get me started on the Indian food there- I might gain 10 pounds just thinking about it!
Janetha- oh please don't make me your role model- that's just silly! Just because I may 'know' what works doesn't mean that I actually DO it!! haha. PB&J is yours for the asking.
Tam- glad you're having success with Bikram and circuits. You looked fab when I saw you in March!
Not quite on track right now, but you know that. However, I have to say this quote brought much joy and happiness to my day: "I have never had an energy bar, rubbed my belly and announced that I was full." Hehe. ;)
Thanks for sharing all your tips Deb. This was really helpful, and I love hearing what works for other people.
great post here :)
i like how losing weight is not just eating less, but adapting to a new and healthy life style. and eating is not just to mantain but actually to enjoy !
That is such a sweet kitty picture!!! And I love that photo of you ordering ice cream in Mexico ;)
Great post, I found myself nodding along to a lot of them. Especially limiting alcohol and eating at restaurants. It doesn't matter how healthy I eat in between those things, if I drink and eat out I start to puff up and gain weight. Right now my biggest thing is trying to limit snacking. In my "bad" periods, I find myself in the kitchen bored or unhappy grazing on things like cereal, crackers, cookies, ice cream. All things I used to keep out of my house when I lived alone but can't escape living with two teenagers at my dad's place! When I'm doing better, I don't get that need or urge to wander into the kitchen and pop a few things in my mouth. Totally an emotional response for me.
I'll be working on getting back on track in the next few weeks. Like you, I don't do anything extreme, but I know I'll feel a lot better once I "clean" things up a bit. I think I'll look through your smoothie recipes some more; I know I could make better smoothies, and maybe they'll work for breakfasts for me, too. I'll experiment a bit! :)
Heab- you have a very good excuse- having to keep the calories up for a baby's sake is about the best one out there. I know you'll get back to where you are happier.
Sufe- yes the enjoyment is the double edged sword- it's what makes life worth living, and yet it can derail the best efforts. But I'm sticking with trying to enjoy. Thanks for the comment- welcome to the blog!
Susan- you're another one who's had a great reason for not being as on track as you'd like- egads your elbow shattered into a thousand pieces would be enough to make me really struggle! It's a shame you can't talk the teenagers in your house into liking junk food that you don't actually like!
Andrea- let me know if you find any smoothies that work for you- or if they help as a sub for breakfast sometimes- but be warned- they are so filling, you may not be able to chug a whole one right before a workout!~
As you know, I don't even own a blender (gasp) and don't like smoothies because they make me too full for too long. However, maybe I'm just lazy and don't want to have to wash a blender. Meh.
I love how the guys at the Mexican DQ are totally checking you out, by the way.
I also love your cats. You know this.
Like others have commented, I too love reading about what works for other people so I love this post!
I have actually been doing pretty good myself this year. On the incline treadmill just about every morning and cut out all snacking except for an occassional indulgence. I see a number on the scale I haven't seen in a loooong time (hello, old friend) and wearing some skirts I haven't worn in a few years due to expanding girth. So...I am not being fanatical about my diet...just cutting here and there when I can...and seeing results. Yay!
Just started reading your blog and I really love it! You have great tips and your protein muffins look great! Can't wait to keep checking back
Abby- I always know I'm onto something with smoothies when people tell me they are kept full for too long :-) And the Mexican dudes are wondering what's with the crazy american!?
Christine- not being fanatical and seeing results? Hurrah!!! I'm very happy for you!
Erica- welcome and thanks for reading! The muffins just couldn't be easier! If you give them a try, let me know what you think!
I just stumbled across your blog and I already love it! these are all such great points and I found that most of them are what help me get back on track.
ps-i made your egg pillows/muffins today for lunch and i am in love
Apllesnoats- oh goodie- welcome and thank you!
I know some bloggers aren't into the whole tracking calories thing but I feel it totally helps to keep me on track and just be mindful of what I eat. That's why your blog encourages me so much cuz you allow yourself freedom within structure. I need that in my dieting as well.
Hi Thoa- Thanks for all the recent comments. If you keep going in my 'journey' of my blogging, you'll see that I've stopped counting- it was a tough decision to make and I actually have a 4 month followup that is scheduled to autopost within a week or two. Ironically, I think that when you don't count, it's easy to nibble and forget about it. Right now I'm trying very very hard to be mindful of my actual hunger- I believe I got a bit lazy in that department & got somewhat careless :-) Keep posted- it's a never ending story haha.
Any chance you are going to update your muffin recipe soon? I am intrigued about the zucchini :-)
Lindsey : you got me! I totally owe you my zucchini version. I promise an update within a few weeks... I'm currently away from kitchens, computers & any chance to do a post with nice photos. Thanks for the nudge ;-)
Glad I could help. I am going to be posting all about how smoothies are changing my life soon! Really enjoy your site!
