Cheering Up

Tonight, Derek and I went for a long walk with our friend Eden from Eden's Eats.  She needed to blow off some steam and get some fresh air.  Some of you may know that Eden's wonderful father, Lou Lou, was just diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer.

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you might know that I lost my father to cancer after a really good fight.  So I can relate to Eden's situation more than I wished I did.  She's a tough cookie underneath what seems to be a scared little girl.  At 23, she's far to young to have already lost her mother.  Now she faces a road ahead that will be challenging at times, but will also provide memories that will last forever.

People keep telling her to be strong.  But I told her that she doesn't need to try to stay strong...the strength will just amazingly come out of nowhere, even when she thinks she has none left.

Meanwhile, there really is nothing that cheers up a foodie like a good hour-long perusal of the aisles at a Japanese market. Thankfully, there was one located on our walking route.

Kobucha squash makes a girl smile
Q:  Have you found that you had unexpected strength?  Do foreign markets cheer you up?  Have you discovered Eden's blog?  It's honest, funny and full of fabulous recipes!

it's good to see BOTH of you smiling with your kobuchas! :) yes, you are wisely correct and I am sorry you know this - you DO gain an unexpected strength when you need to. I know this also - I have been there.

I love Eden's blog and yours too! <3

O deb, I look terrible! And I apologize for dropping the birth control candy on the floor! How was the sashimi? I made Kabocha risotto for papa (I know it sounds weird, but with greek yogurt!).

And good lord I'm a lot in this post! I cant handle the attention! I'm so not that great. I know I'm young, but I feel like I'm 80 (minus the depends and prune juice).

PS
I have a feeling Julie, your parents, and my mom are watching us endlessly grocery shop laughing at us. And at your japanese bra!

Kristina- I'm sorry you've been 'there' too-in the position to find strength deep down. On a happier note, I'm glad you came and visited the blog. I had no idea you read it :-)

Eden- you look adorable. It's ok about the birth control candy- I still have more and remember Derek was the one who started that trend. Sashimi was THE BOMB! Kabocha risotto- yum! Lucky Papa! Yes, I'm sure everyone will laugh at my Japanese bra- and they might be slightly disappointed to know that my boobs aren't really that big :-D hehehe

Derek is the trendsetter....hopefully some kid will find those candies on the floor and maybe we'll spare an episode of "16 and pregnant".

I've been reading for a while now - found you from several of "Marty's Babes" and I think I commented way back then? but yes, I have been reading since, and I will make a point of letting you know! BAD blogger in me for not saying hello more! :)

oh I love this pictures. Strength comes from each other. We need that. We need to lean on each other so that we don't fall completely over. I am so glad you have each other right now.
Cheers!

Deb - you are an amazing person for being there for all of us as we go through what you and Derek have already.

Eden and I (and so many others) are so lucky to know you!

I think you gave some great advice. Strength will come to you, you can't force it.

Great pic too!!

I got your comment...nice to 'meet' you!

I agree with the others, I think it's fantastic you are there for Eden. You have shown what a true friend is and you know she really appreciates all you've done for her.

I'm so sorry about your father. I lost mine when I was 9. Just a little thang, but even at that age you learn that life goes on.

Anyway, yes I love Eden's blog too. I recently cleaned up my google reader (again), but her's always stays in there. :)

I think that it's wonderful that you're there for Eden (whose blog I LOVE). She seems like such a smart and brave woman.

And I LOVE Japanese markets. I can see the Pocky sticks behind you... my favorite are the ones dipped in strawberry icing. :)

You're such a kind hearted friend. I haven't been reading many blogs lately and just saw yesterday that her dad was diagnosed with cancer. So sad.

Yes foreign markets do cheer me up. :-)

Kristina- aww! <3 and you are NOT a bad blogger- never any pressure to come here- I was just tickled that you did!

Lindsay- you are right that strength comes from each other too- I definitely felt that way when my Dad was very ill.

Ameena- thank you. And I just don't understand why soooo many people are going through trials and tribulations right now with parents- and all different ages as well! :-(

Lynn- me too- I'm glad i'm in town for a while

Diet- you are so right- you can't force strength.

Ashley- you poor thing- 9 is so young to lose a parent.

Brittany- omg how much do I love Pokki!!??!!!

Jenn- I will never forget how supportive and kind you were when my Dad was dying- you were more supportive than many of my life-long friends. I'm simply doing for Eden what you did for me. <3

The asian supermarket definitely cheers me up, especially when the company is of like mind! Hope you are good pretty lady, it must be nice for eden to have you I can't imagine how hard this must be. Big hugs x x

your the one with a big heart. Its the only part of you that doesn't shrink.

I think it is so great that you and Eden can meet up so easily and have easy access to kabocha squash. I have yet to find and try some...grrrr!

Really, I love both of your blogs and it's fun to see the two intertwine a bit (:

I so agree about strength being there unexpectedly. Lately I've needed it every morning. It reminds me a bit of the stories you hear about moms suddenly having the strength to lift a car off of their child...you don't believe that it's possible until it happens.

From all of your posts it sounds like you must be an amazing friend to have. WE should all be so lucky (:

McIntosh- your comments are always so thoughtful and sweet. I'm sorry that you've been needing strength daily, but I'm glad that you are able to find it. Hang in there.

Spending time with friends can give you so much strength in a difficult time. Glad you guys get to hang out!!! And, yes, I sometimes find that I have unexpected strength. But it can be hard to believe it'll be there when I'll need it sometimes...

I feel for both of you. Hopefully asian markets help bring smiles as well as strange dragonfruits and agar jellies. When the tears run dry, there's always dried seaweed snacks!
