Here's an example of her spunk. On our recent trip to Tokyo (yes, two weeks before the catastrophe), we picked up a Hello Kitty stuffed animal for Julie. When we presented Hello Kitty to her, she didn't quite understand that the name was based on the multi-billion dollar mega-brand "Hello Kitty". She just thought her name was "Kitty". Clearly, this was not up to snuff. So Julie looked at the animal pensively and suddenly announced:
"I don't like the name "Kitty". I shall call her .... (dramatic pause) ..... Elizabeth."
We giggled. We loved it. I don't even think that Julie realized that my middle name and that of my mom is Elizabeth. And, I didn't know it until 2 minutes ago, but Julie's Grand-daughter Katy's middle name is also Elizabeth. Good taste permeates our extended families, apparently.:
| Someone related to Julie might be currently in possession of a "Hello Kitty"/Elizabeth laptop case and socks (and admittedly more items at home) |

Finally, Eden of Eden's Eats wrote a very insightful post about her experience of losing a parent inspired by the loss of Derek's mum.

So sorry to hear this Deb. Just the use of the word "cheeky" already makes her sound like an awesome woman. I hope you, Derek, and the family are all doing okay and sending lotsandlots of love your way xoxoxo
P.S. My middle name is Elizabeth too, clearly she had excellent taste as well ;)
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. She seemed like a beauitful woman, full of spark indeed.
Praying for your family.

Sending my love and prayers! Big hug.
Julie sounds wonderful! I'm sure she and my mum are laughing over a pint somewhere. You know I'm here for both you and Derek when you guys get back.
And on a lighter note, I once had a friend who had no idea what hello kitty was so she was like, "Thats lame! I'm calling it 'goodbye kitty'".
I'm sorry for your and your family's loss. I know she was a wonderful woman as her light shines through her son. My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours. (((HUGS))) and love.
Girls- you are all so sweet- thank you.
Eden- That's hilarious about goodbye kitty! I'm not sure Julie is having a pint, however. Toast and marmite was more her speed :-) When we're back, we'll make you a traditional Shepherd's pie and perhaps we will have a pint!
Jenn-you are very right about her light shining through her son. Part of the reason I really 'fell' for Derek was that I could see through his family and friends that he was a good person. That was one of the first tests he had to pass :-)
I love the image of the daffodils blooming in honor of Julie. I hope daffs and hello kitty will forever remind you of her!
Blessings to you, Derek and all those whose lives she touched.
Sending my love to you, Derek and the rest of the family. Thank you for sharing more about Julie, it sounds like she was a great lady! Love you so much, D!
Elizabeth...I love it. Sounds like a wonderful lady, and she must have been to raise such a wonderful son.
Thinking of you both today. xox
To be honest, my mom wasn't a "pint" gal either. Chocolate and....chocolate was her only speed!
PS, if I get a cat, I'm calling her Elizabeth.
I'm so sorry!
She sounds like an amazing woman who had a wonderful life.
This is such a sweet tribute to your MIL - your love and admiration for her comes across loud and clear.
I can't wait to see you back in LA again Deb...and until then, safe travels.
Kitty is a lame name. Where's the creativity? I obviously would have gotten along cheekily with Julie ;)
You're in my thoughts--still and again.
julie sounds so hilarious! haha and i'm glad you didn't tell her the kitty thing. eden's post about her mom was AMAZING. it pretty much had me in tears! have a fabulous weekend girl!
What a beautiful post. My sympathies go out to you, she sounds like she was a special lady.
best wishes to Derek and you Deb. Love you! <3 <3 from Sigrid and mormor Stina =)
Oh Deb, my condolences to both you and Derek. Your mother in law sounds like a gem and I can see she is dearly missed.
I am so sorry I missed this when you posted it. I am so very sorry for your loss. She sounds like she was a fun lady and I am sure you both miss her so much. Very sorry to hear this.
