So today is a flashback to a post about one of our favorite trips ever: Hawaii Winter 2010. It did not turn out to be a disaster, but it very well could have been one, thanks to a devastating earthquake in Chile and the possibility of a Tsunami in the Hawaiian island chain. To read about our evacuation and the fact that I ended up at 24 Hour Fitness to work out while awaiting disaster, click here.
After the event, Derek and I talked about whether we learned anything from this experience. Yes, I’d say we learned some interesting things…
If it's yellow, it probably belongs in your emergency kit:
This was our purchased-last-minute Emergency Supply. Is it me, or is there a large amount of yellow in this part of the kit?
Let’s look at a small portion of our little last minute / we-might-be-stuck-in-a-field-or-parking-lot-for-a-week shopping spree...
Protein Sources: Tuna, Spam Light (I know, I should have splurged and got the full-fat version), Derek’s little wieners (hee), Tofu, and Three flavors of Beef Jerky- heaven forbid I should get bored with one flavor during a natural disaster.
The “essentials”: First aid items, Flashlight and batteries, (more) plastic sacks, (more) hand sanitizer, (more) Wet wipes. I say ‘more’ because I already had these items thanks to my over-packing habits. Notice the Advil for when you consume too many Mai Tais.
Essential Hawaiian-themed Eats, because it’s highly unfair to have “Themes” for fun events (like parties and weddings) and not for disasters: Spam Singles, Macademia nuts with Spam flavor (?!), White Chocolate Macademia Nut Cllf Bar, MacaMania energy bars ( gasp on the 330 calories for one small bar, but I suppose that keeping calories up is a good idea if you are trying to stay alive).
Please note that I have been far too scared to eat any of the spam products. I bought them just in case I might be dying and I really felt that I should not leave this earth without trying Spam even the once.
Edited to add: I still haven't tried Spam a year later. Also, I found many of these items at home in my nearby grocery store in Los Angeles. I didn’t need to go to Hawaii and be faced with death to find the need to buy Spam products. And one more thing:, yesterday I threw away the now year-old Spam Macademias that I just couldn't bring myself to eat. Hoard much?
This was Derek’s purchase on the right. Apparently, he didn’t want dragon-breath during a catastrophe. PS. Splenda stolen from McDonalds during our evacuation.
Lemon Lunas, obvi.
While yellow was the dominant Emergency-kit color, it also seemed to be everywhere even before the Pseudo-nami:
Beautiful Stained Glass Window made by our land-lady’s Mom. Spot the cute yellow tea kettle and the blender (lucky me)
We slept upstairs but the bathroom was downstairs. I'm pretty sure that's not 'to code.'
Sooo yummy, yet sadly contains many grams of sugar per “The Daily Plate”.
Edited to add: Ironically, after a long hiatus from calorie counting, I just went back to the DP almost a year to the day after I first tried (and loved) it while in Hawaii. And I'm loving it again. It seems to keep me on the straight & narrow.

What else did we learn?
Prepare and pack up all the food you can carry:
This home-made filet-o-fish sandwich was made by cooking the raw fish the moment I heard we were evacuating at 5am. I also hard-boiled some eggs. And made a protein shake, To-Go. Yes, some people might have grabbed medications and important documents. I made a dash for the kitchen to make sure we wasted no food.
Speaking of food...Evacuating sure works up an appetite! Just ask fellow Evacuee Allie, at Pimp my Protein Shake: She admits to consuming enough high-glycemic tropical fruit to fuel a few Iron Man Triatholons while awaiting the Tsunami on neighboring Maui. I must share some of our texts during this time:
- Allie: Are u really at 24 hour fitness?
- Deb: Yes, it’s how I cope with disaster.
- Allie: I eat chips during natural disasters.
- Allie: So many blog titles: In case of emergency. Appetite of tsunami proportions. Appetite for destruction. When sirens blare, it’s time for ice cream.
- Deb: Stop stop you have so many good ones and mine is boring
- Allie: Tsunamis are “swell”
- Deb: hahahahahha
Life is short: One really should drink Mai Tais a little more often:
Deb Before:
Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a Habitual Modifier. I even modified this Mai Tai because I didn’t want the “prepackaged mix” full of sugar and calories. Instead, this creation was light and dark rum, soda water and a splash of pineapple juice. And it was soo good.
Deb After:
Actually, the Mai Tai had nothing to do with my actions above. This behavior has persisted for decades.
Old habits die hard.
What else did we learn?
Life is short: Eat only spectacular dessert:
One night we didn't care for any of the restaurant desserts on offer, so Derek announced that he was going to go home and create an amazing dessert from the remnants of food we still had back at the cottage:
You have to hand it to Derek- he's resourceful and creative.
Derek’s Temple of the Sissy Tsunami:
- Half of an Ice cream Sandwich
- Half of a slice of lemon cake plucked from the emergency food stash
- Expertly decorated with Japanese Pocky Men’s biscuits (why dark chocolate makes them “men’s” I’m not entirely sure).
To take my functional flip-flops, or my dressy flip flops?
Reefs are so practical: they have a beer-bottle opener on the bottom.
“Reef”…Where fashion meets function.
Which brings me to the next lesson we learned:
When faced with disaster, keep hydrated...
(water is best but these island boys are after the beer)
This Bud’s for you, Bruh.
Appreciate walks on the beach and biking to picnics just a little more:
The Ocean is mysterious and beautiful. Even Wimpy Waves deserve our respect…
Now, here’s my PSA: Get your kit together: Here are some sites that I just stumbled upon. There are hundreds more:
- Homeland Security preparedness list
- Hurricane list
- Earthquake survival

Glad you ended up having a good vacation after all. I have never tried spam either... It's funny that you even bought spam macadamia nuts! :)
I used to have a well-stocked emergency kit, but I honestly don't know what happened to it. I will put one together today. Promise. Thanks for the reminder! It's something I knew I should be doing for a long time...
I actually remember that vacation last year! Didn't you have a string of "When Vacations Attack"-type trips? Anyway, you know how I roll. If there is an emergency there might not be first-aid and extra clothes packed, but there will be plenty of snacks, water, pet supplies and Mad Libs.
There will never be Spam. Ever.
P.S. We did have the Snowpocalypse here with around 16 inches in one night. My house was properly stocked with tea, food and the Internet. There was no Spam.
Andrea- living in California, you and I need to be prepared. It's always been something on the "to Do" list that went on for years. Then I just finally did it. Now I hope that it's up to date- The last time I checked, the Luna bars were expired (but still tasty) :-)
Abby- You'd rather die than eat Spam. That makes sense actually :-)
This was one of the first posts of yours I read (an remember laughing my head off) and we met not just long after this!!!
I'm a major over packer. It's ridiculous. For AZ I packed like 5 dresses for a 5 day trip and ended up wearing the same loose yoga pants every day.
Ha ha ha, I am laughing right now at your post.
oh I miss hawaii! We live there for a few years. Lots of tsunami threats, never any tsnumais. I'm like allie though, I tend to think diaster will leave me without food. Like when our power went out, I immediatley grabbed food for survival and ate a bunch of oat bran, haha. Something isn't right about that.

Luckily where I'm at we don't really get hit with anything too crazy. We have bad winds and can have some bad snow storms (it was negative 5 yesterday- but that was a first here in a long time!) but no earthquakes, floods, etc.
But I'm such a packrat... I always have food "just in case." Case in point the stale food in my car that I have in case for some reason I get stranded. LOL.
Oh, and I haven't had spam in forever but I used to LOVE it as a kid. Try it, I dare you!!
I want in on the macamanaia! Your arms look super fab on that bike but you know I'm obsessed by your arms by now! x x
So I have to laugh...this week we were hit with snow and power outages! I was totally unprepared (house-sitting actually)when at 2pm the day AFTER the snow our power went out. Keep in mind it was sunny and not really all that cold but my biggest fear is being cold and trapped. So...I start making phone calls to neighbors and the power company, contemplating which hotel to escape to and then discovered the gas-powered fireplace. No electricity needed...I grabbed a flashlight, tons of blankets and hunkered down in front of the fireplace for the looonnnggg winter's night with some snacks. Mind you it is still early afternoon, sun out and the house is still warm. In fact, I managed to sneak in a hot shower for extra warm-up insurance (:
Long story short...after an 'eternity' of suffering (all of eight hours!) the electricity comes back on. It's now only 10pm. The next few days I read about people who lost power for 3 or 4 days. I am such a wimp...
Needless to say, in the event of a REAL emergency I more than likely will be one of the first victims or my sheer dumb luck bolstered by an uncanny knack for last minute preparedness (oh the oxymoron!)will save me.
Fun post and I love the yellow theme. I always notice colors too. Hopefully, the yellow signifies sunny skies ahead.
The Daily Plate huh? Never checked it out though I use caloriecount.com occasionally.
Jenn- 5 dresses for 5 days and only wearing loose yoga pants- that's me in a nutshell- no wonder we get along so well :-)
Carrie- this is a recycled post- I actually went back and re-wrote much of the text b/c my blogging 'voice' has changed so much in one short year. The photos are the same, as is the bottom line that I cooked fish and worked out during a disaster.
Lindsay- haha oat bran that's hilarious! You lived in Hawaii--- me: jealous!
Tam- the macamania bars were soooooo good and locally made- thanks for the sweet arm comment.
April- really, you dare me? I might have to take you up on it however I did nibble on the macademias before I tossed them. There actually wasn't any 'spam' on them, it was just the spices :-? Does that count?
McIntosh- Eek, stay warm and safe! I lOVED how much yellow there was everywhere. Glorious. And Daily Plate knocks the socks off any other calorie counting site I have ever seen. It has the largest database with the most obscure listings (like the tiny locally made macamania bars- it won my heart on that)
How terrified you must have been Deb! But I know that on Ali's list of must-haves would have been Listering Pocket Packs. He and Derek have that in common.
I am very prepared for disasters! I have emergency packs that I purchased online with food, water, etc. and I also filled them with warm clothes. I suppose I should fill my car with stuff too...great reminder.
You look fabulous in the bike shot! Looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday...can't wait.
i remember when you got stuck there!!!! so weird that that was a year ago! i remember it was allll the talk in blog land and we were all so worried about you!
I love this! Hawaii is such a gorgeous place to travel. Andy and I have the Hawaii bug and have been to Kauai, Oahu and Maui but are itching to see the Big Island.
I can't even imagine being evacuated. I would have purchased so much chocolate covered macademia nuts from the ABC store. And I'd be scared of the spam too.
Buahaha! This was too funny! ... because you made it through safely, of course!
I live in Texas, but not the part of Texas that gets all the tornadoes. Sometimes we get hurricanes and tropical storms though. Rarely bad...Ike was a real shitfest, but I was off at school in California.
LA supposedly gets earthquakes. I've been in two. Both times the earth twitched a second then realized it wasn't worth the bother. Alas, no dramatics.
I want to try spam some day. Just to see why my Filipino roommate loved it so much.
DamnTheFreshman- there are a LOT of people who LOVE spam. One day, I'll have the courage. Probably when faced with the possibility of really starving. :-)
I can't believe it's been a YEAR since I first read that post. And here I am a year later still laughing at your hilarious blogging.
I am SO not prepared for disaster. In Canada all we get are blizzards, and in that case you just don't leave the house. Oh, and there was that one time when we had an earthquake. Instead of evacuating I jumped in the shower to look nice for the aftershock and subsequent handsome rescue crew ;)
Susan- HAHA you showered to look nice for rescue crew! Hilarious! Reminds me of when I my one and only panic attack only to have a gorgeous firefighter come to assess the situation. Hee.
How much did I love this post??? this much (my hand are wide apart!). I heard spam is surprisingly not so terrible taste and health wise.
As you know, in LA when it rains, its the apocalypse. Everyone flips a s*** and the world comes to an end....until its 73 and sunny again like we are used to.
I hoard stuff but not for emergencies. I hoard yogurts and cole slaw mix! I know its weird but I guess I'm freaked out I wont be able to make a salad in a moments notice and that I wont have calcium.
Eden- we loved this trip so much. I loved writing the post at McDonalds while we were evacuated. Life felt precious because we dodged a bullet.
I hoard stuff on the regular anyway- emergency or not. Cole slaw mix huh?! Interesting!
i need some fancy fit flops!!!
Lynn- I loved them so much I got another pair. I wear them pretty much every day, even in the winter. It's a bit embarrassing.
