Self-Indulgence

I wanted to publish this post for my birthday last week, but my 16 year old kitty, Samantha got sick and I shelved the post for the moment.  While she is now feeling better, we are still 300 more road miles and one diagnostic procedure away from knowing the whole story.

Despite the fact that this is my blog, I try to keep things in check and avoid narcissism .  Well, today I caved.  As it was my birthday last week, I decided to write a post that engages in some Self-Indulgence.

Is it self-indulgent that I bought a new dress and wanted to share the ensemble with you?
No!
Well, maybe.

Is it self-indulgent that I'm splashing photos of myself in said new dress over the internet?
No!
Well, perhaps.

Is it self-indulgent that I'm wearing false eyelashes and blue glitter eyeliner?
    Definitely.

So, here's the story behind this post.  I'll be honest: I haven't been motivated to shift the weight that I gained on my trip over the holidays (post will be up by Easter, promise!) My pants are tight and I'm not comfortable.  As someone who has lost a lot of weight, there is always a fear inside me that one day I could gain it all back.  When I've gained any weight I think:  "Perhaps this is the beginning of a slippery slope?"

Here is why this post is really self-indulgent.  It's because today, I'm practicing Self-AcceptanceAnd for me, that is self-indulgent.  I'm posting photos of myself even though I'm not at my 'happy weight.'  I am accepting myself right now.  Today.  Or at least I'm trying.

Also, while, leggings and flouncy dresses are my current BFFs,  I'm giving myself the gift of PatienceAnd that, too, is self-indulgent for me.  I'm not trying to stress about the weight gain too much, despite the fact that it does, in fact, bother me.

So here it is: indulge me the self indulgence...

    The Dress:

I scored this O'Neill dress at Becker Surf Shop in Malibu for $20 on sale.  No doubt it is intended for a teenage (I am not) surfer girl (I am not) who is fond of big, roomy dresses (I am).

It even has pockets:  perfect for a phone, some zinc oxide and the keys to your jeep.

    The tank top:

No idea where I got it:  I have a slight tank top obsession and own one in nearly every color.  I feel naked unless I wear one alone, doubled up, under t-shirts, or under very low-cut surfergirl dresses.

    The tights:

I found these at Tesco Superstore near London's Heathrow airport for £1,99.  It's just like a SuperTarget where you can buy your knickers and your Snickers all in one trip. Love.

    The Boots:

    Ah, the boots...

I realize that this dress begs for flip flops or if it's below 70F, some UGG boots.  But when I bought this dress, it was raining and I am the last person on the planet without UGG boots.

Therefore, I went with what I the next obvious choice:  Cowboy boots.  But these are no ordinary cowboy boots.  These boots are older than many of my readers. I bought them brand new when I was 15 years old at (now kaput) Howard & Phil's Western Store in the Glendale Galleria.  In 6 months I may look at this outfit and say "What was I thinking?"  Plus, I have no idea if western boots are even popular right now.  But, I do know that I wear these boots every chance I get.

These photos were taken in Palm Springs, California with Mount San Jacinto in the background.

And with the stress of last week, one thing is certain: Next week, I'm booking a much-needed, truly self-indulgent massage.

Speaking of self-affirming messages, check out this Operation Beautiful Post (a couple of my favorite fuzzy people are pictured). And if you haven't yet bought your copy of the book Operation Beautiful, I highly recommend that you do.  That is not because my Dad and I are featured, but because it is a very moving book with wonderful messages.

Edited to add:  SAMANTHA is GREAT!  We got the diagnosis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (aren't you glad I shared?) rather than the more ominous Intestinal Lymphoma aka cancer.  Thank GAWWWWWD and thank you all for your sweet comments, tweets etc.  We're over the moon! :-)

Q:  What have you done lately that is self-indulgent?  Are you patient and accepting of yourself? Have you ever posted an OB note?

Beautiful Deb. You are so so soooo stinkin' cute. I swear. I love that dress. I love the boots. Seriously, I want that outfit. I need that dress, but alas no surf shops in Nashville. I'm going to try and google it and find one for myself.

Haha - Tesco. Love it. Nothing like picking up your knickers and Snickers al in one place, or in my case, chocolate Digestive biscuits. ;)

P.S. Loved the idea of this post and praying for Sam!

Yesyesyes! Nothing wrong with a little narcissism. Especially when it's your birthday, and especially when you look as cute as you do!! I dream of owning red cowboy boots. Someday I will find the perfect second-hand pair :)

    Heart ya Deb!! xo

I don't have Uggs either Deb! I knew we were friends for a reason. :)

I'm glad Samantha is better and I'm also glad that you wrote this post. You are gorgeous just the way you are. I realize that sounds cliche but trust me when I say that I really mean that. But I too have issues with self-acceptance so I know where you are coming from.

Snickers and knickers, I love it.

When can I take you out for your birthday?

I really needed this post Deb. Thank you so very much.

LOVE the whole outfit! Ridiculously cute. It looks like your album cover. You know, where you're belting out the hits!

I have Uggs (bought with gift cert) and I think that dress looks better with the "lighter weight" cowboy boots.

Ahhh, just to see sunshine in photos is nice.

    Praying for Sam....

PS The Life You Want is an amazing book and totally speaking to me right now. Has a whole section on motivation. You'll find the motivation when you're ready. Be kind to yourself.

But more importantly, your old self is gone. she will never come back because you didn't love that person. You love YOU now, as do we all!

Love the dress and the whole outfit. And I love the scenery. Gorgeous! I think Palm Springs is going on my "list."

And I love that you are practicing self-acceptance and are patient with yourself. That can be sooooo hard to do... But it's really the best Birthday gift you can give yourself! :-)

You look gorgeous in that dress. Perfect, even. I love that you are practicing self-acceptance! Funny how something that seems like it should be easy takes so much practice sometimes.

Susan- Thanks girl! And oh wow, I can totally understand the love for red (faded, worn?!) cowboy boots.

Suzanne- thank you for saying that- I'm happy when I can help someone.

Carbz- Thank you! Maybe I can borrow the book when I see you :-)If I'm not mistaken, you have the most rad pair of leopard boots ever.

Lindsay- thank you! And funny about the tights- who would ever think that fishnets don't could look un-sleasy!?

Andrea- thank you and you are right about the birthday gift. That view takes my breath away every single time I see it.

Alina- thanks you! And I'm hoping that practice makes perfect :-)

Ok, I'm not seeing the weight gain at all. But seriously, I'm lovin' the look. I'm no teenager either, but I always go against the grain. And my hubby hates me in 'old lady' clothes. You need to take me shopping! ;)
    hugs my friend....xxoo
and happy belated birthday! I think I know 4 other people who have your same birthday. Crazy!

Ameena- thank you so much- very sweet. you, me and Ari don't have UGGs- that's 3 people on earth. And you're sweet to want to take me for my b-day <3 I'll be back for a decent amount of time after the first week of Feb- we'll get together then for sure!

Deb you look stunning!!! Both you, your outfit, the photos themselves, the backdrop...

And yes, BE self indulgent. You will appreciate these photos later. trust me, you will :)

Deb (Smoothie Girl Eats Too) said...

Thank you Averie! When I'm 94 I'll definitely be happy I took these shots! :-)

    Abby said...

First of all, I don't have UGGs either. To be honest, most of us in Michigan have multiple pairs of snow boots more fit for function than fashion (or maybe that's just me.)

Second, I love you and this post because it's you. Why shouldn't you accept yourself the way you are? You're you--mom to furry babies, wife, friend, blogger, inspiration--and that's all you know how to be. The outside--although beautiful, I might add--is simply a vehicle for this spirit.

Sam is still in my thoughts!!!

First of all you look awesome!
    Secondly cutest dress ever
    And lastly
I LOVE posting operation beautiful notes - I keep an OB kit in my car so I can at any moment play!

Oh Deb, this is honestly such a lovely post. I LOVE the dress and the cowboy boot combination...and I am in search for the perfect pair of cowboy boots that I can have for years, too!

This is your blog. Post about whatever the heck you want. We love you, so it will all be great to us :)

    sarahlearns said...

i love your dress + cowboy boot combination - it's very cute. i've got to say, that even if you're now at your "happy place" weight-wise, you look great!

also,i'm going to echo what some other people have said, and tell you that it's your blog & you can write about what you want! :)

    Amy at TheSceneFromMe said...

I do not own any Ugg boots, so there is someone other than you!
The dress and boot ensemble is chic, looks great!
And where were the photos taken at? That scenery is stunning!
I am loving your self acceptance attitude. We have to accept ourselves the way we are otherwise we would be stressed out way too much all the time :)

You look so cute in that dress with the boots! Great style. :) P.S. I think I vaguely remember that store at the Galleria. I haven't been there in at least 10 years!

you look GORGEOUS seriously and i'm not even just saying that you know like when people just say things like seriously you're glowing. i've gone through the same 'HOLY BALLS I'M GOING TO GAIN EVERYTHING BACK' phase and then i realize wait a second 10 lbs is nothing and i like what i'm eating now more then i did when i was 10lbs thinner and so i'm good with it haha. i think that you look perfect in that dress and i'm glad you do too ;)

Deb (Smoothie Girl Eats Too) said...

Abby- thank you and I love that "outside is just a vehicle for the spirit"

Joy- thank you! Glad you are an OB'er too :-)

THinny & Sarah- thank you both. And yes, you're right about it being my blog. Yet sometimes I have to remind myself that I may have a couple of dozen 'real' friends who read the blog, but many more that I've never met. They may be here for a smoothie recipe, not to see me prancing around in a surfer dress and cowboy boots :-)

Amy- thanks! The photos are from Palm Springs, CA. Love.

Carrie- thank you! You knew the galleria? It was the one that Moonbeam Zappa talked about in Valley Girl. It was our high school hangout mall. Then they spruced it up and it never was the same :-)

Lynn- Thanks Lynn...I love 'nude' fishnets too. Surprisingly comfy.

Julie- aww shucks! Thank you!! True re. the 10 pounds- I like what I'm eating now too. :-) Especially when some of my recipes come from you!

You look AMAZING!!!! Just the way you are (add Bruno Mars tune here.)
I am being self-indulgent today: I'm not working, not going to work out, and I'm not running any errands.
Last week my father-in-law had 2 emergency surgeries. Yesterday my brother had shoulder surgery. I have been running around like a maniac, going from work to hospital to school to pick up the kids, back to the hospital, and on and on.
Today I'm taking a day off.

You look adorable and before I got to the part about the boots, I was thinking, "Those boots just make that outfit. I wish I could think of cool outfit combos like that." I think I have those tights too!

I heart the Moonbeam Zappa/Valley Girl reference up there! ha ha ha! Haven't thought of that in eons.

And...self indulgent post? Porque no? It is your blog and you can blog what you wanna blog!

    Jenn said...

Love the outfit, the photos, and you!! Seriously, I don't find this post self-indulgent at all.

I also love what Sam and Ellie have to say about beauty. Meow Cow agrees!

I don't have uggs either! I think you look so good! I really like that dress and the tights. The boots too. Cowboy boots are totally in.

I wish I could find some nude fishnets.

You look HOT! I hope your kitty's ok.

I'm in London now but have yet to visit Tesco!

FINALLY GOT HERE. I know. I am a loser. You, my dear, are a winner. I had no idea Becker Surf had in person stores! I order from them all the time! In my opinion, POCKETS make the dress. Dresses with pockets make the world go round. You are SO damn cute in this dress, the tights, the boots.. love it. I also wish I had your legs. They are lean and long and sexy. Wanna trade??? Haha.. if below 70 degrees. I wear flip flops in 30 degree temps. Such a snow bunny I am. I hope you do more fashion/outfit posts. So cute. OH hahah remember when you had your pants (or top?) on inside out when we were in San Fran?! I never noticed but I remember you telling me after. Haha.. another reason I love you so much.

So glad to hear Sam doesn't have cancer! THANK GOD.

I will miss you while I am gone. Heck, I miss you all the time! xoxoxo

Okay this is my 4th attempt at this...my last three replies never appeared due to my playing around with my computer security!

So...no Uggs for me either. Not a big fan really but the truth is I NEVER know what's in style anyway. Now...cowboy boots and tank top dresses with pockets (best part!) are more my thing. Really want a pair of cowboy boots even more now.

You look so beautiful and free in those pics and the setting is perfect. Especially as I trudge through cold snow and blecccchhhh around here.

Go ahead and self-indulge. By doing so you are inspiring and motivating lots of us out here.

Oh and enjoy that self-indulgent much deserved belated birthday massage too.

Meows to Sam and Ellie (:

Azusmom- thank you- and boy oh boy do YOU need some self indulgence! THinking good thoughts for your FIL. Hugs.

Christine- thank you and guess what, you just outed yourself as being about my age. hahah- that'll teach you to leave nice comments on my blog! :-)

Jenn- thank you, really you don't think it's indulgent? Oh goodie :-) Meow cow is a stud muffin and he knows it.

Amanda- thanks! And really, cowboy boots are in? yay! Sheer luck. I'm sure you can find nude fishies somewhere?!

Damn15- thank you- hot?!!? Wow! You must visit a tesco when you're in London. Then again, one of Derek and my hobbies (yes, I said that) is shopping in foreign grocery stores- we can peruse aisles for HOURS! I also got the cutest leopard sking and polka dot rain coats there for really cheap. LOVE Tesco superstore.

Janetha- oh girl, you know the way to my heart- thank you for the compliments. Bahaha- yes when we went walking and I had my pants on inside out- should I post that? go, me!

McIntosh- thank you for persevering with your sweet comment. And for passing your meows to our babies and for visiting here on the regular <3

You look radiant. Self-acceptance looks sexy on you! Or maybe it's the boots...

I gave up my Uggs when an evil pet ferret I had briefly decided they were its mothers womb and created a nest inside of them. I prefer my feet to NOT smell like ferret. I do like them to smell like cowgirl boots or spinning shoes.

    Happy Birthday!

Hi there! I just found your blog, and wanted to take the time to say that I believe there is no better time than a birthday for self-indulgence! It also seems that the more you practice restraint in every day life (this goes for eating at restaurants or going on special dates too) the more fun it is to splurge and self-indulge!
    Happy Belated B-day.
