It's a new year... do you want to get your smoothie on? (Video)

Happy New year everyone!  I'm dying to get my (late) holiday post up but due to a series of circumstances and running around like mad, it'll have to wait until next week.  Meanwhile, I was able to shoot a 3 minute video about why I get my smoothie on and why I whole-heartedly believe in smoothies for weight loss and weight management.

As you can read in my weight loss story, I have tried balanced 'real' breakfasts:  eggs, nut butters, oats, cereals, the works.  They don't usually really fill me up very well and I find that I'm hungry all day long (even after eating lunch).  Smoothies, on the other hand, have a way of tempering my hunger for the whole day.  Perhaps it's the huge, fluffy, icy, protein-infused-poof.  I honestly don't know.  I just know that I can maintain my weight much easier when I start the day off with a smoothie.  Even if it's cold outside.

Note to all those people who prefer to 'chew your calories': I totally understand and respect that sentiment.  I feel the same way, so this is where thick smoothies come into play.  They can be eaten with a spoon from a bowl with all sorts of delicious toppings for chew and crunch.  I do this every day. I cannot just sip a liquid smoothie and call it good- I need the crunch as well.  Even my mouth needs to exercise!

So here is a short video with a cameo appearance by someone very special.

If it would be helpful to readers, I can do future tutorial-style videos. I believe that the difference between a mediocre smoothie and a great smoothie is in the add-ins and flavorings (as well as the gums).  Feel free to leave me a comment if you have any questions you'd like me to address. With a little creativity and perseverance, anyone can make a great smoothie.

Q:  Do you get your smoothie on?  Rain or shine? Have you found them helpful? Which is your favorite?

I can't wait to see more videos!! Protein shakes/smoothies used to never fill me up until I stumbled across your website- and found out how to make big and thick ones! I am forever grateful :D

Gaaah!! Ellie is SO cute!! You know, I have never tried a smoothie for breakfast before. I used to do recovery shakes aaalll the time, or smoothies as an afternoon snack. But now that I workout in-between clients, I can't just come home and whip one up. The idea of having one for breakfast is verrry intriguing though. I will have to give it a try and report back! Despite the fact that it's currently below zero Fahrenheit here :\

P.S. I love your hair, as always.

i love smoothies! i have to be careful though - i love throwing this and that in it, and i can end up with some pretty calorie-heavy smoothies. i just started embracing green monsters, though, and they're my new go-to workout recovery choice!

LoveLife: I wish my smoothies would feel me up too! That would be fun! ;-) Kidding of course. I will address the filling power of smoothies in an upcoming video, but I'd say that the two most important things are LOTS of ice, water and protein. I also cannot make a fluffy shake without the gums.

Lindsay- So you do the big ole two-part smoothie too? I've never warmed to amazing grass. I remember Allie calling it Amazing Ass. Hee. Or was that Heather? Oh well, glad you found something that works for you!

Susan- yes, the cold does make it less appealing. You are the PERFECT person to do the two-shake trick, or at least make a spare and take it with you. You sip it between clients. I used to do that between patients. It saved my bacon about a zillion times. And you are way too kind- it was a bad hair day. Today of course it looks better ;-)

Sarah- it can be dangerous adding in too many mixins. I'll do a video with ideas for low-cal add-ins. I'm glad you like your GMs. They can be very filling and of courser UBERhealthy.

Jenn- You're long overdue to come over for smoothies. :-)

Janetha- Woah, forgot about my protein hot chocolate. So funny. My muffins don't work at altitude, but the protein hot choc is the bomb? Weird. I luv my furball too :-)

Tam- :-) Was so fun to see you the other week!

I loved this video! Very nice. I always read your blog because I've come to the same discovery - shakes/smoothies are essential to me!

Hahah! You wrote this for me didn't you?? Please please save me from my awful smoothies Deb! Seriously, I want to love the smoothie like you but I am so time crunched that I never bother to try anything new out. But you and your awesome vid - hello kitty! - have inspired me. Tomorrow, my friend, things will be different.

Just the reminder I needed. My smoothie making has been woefully lacking! Know the nursery rhyme about the "Girl with the Curl"? When she was good she was very, very good but when she was bad...well that's how my smoothies are.

I only have an immersion blender right now (no money to buy a regular one either) and limited fixins' though I have my gums and made a decent pumpkin smoothie a couple of weeks ago.

I kind of like drinking them in mid-winter standing by a fire or my portable heater (:

Any suggestions using powdered egg whites or liquid egg whites? I seem to have an overload.

By the way, your smoothie blog is how I got "sucked" into reading blogs (pun, pun, pun)...and loving it (: Oh and Ellie is a perfect video sidekick!

I'm not sure if it's the internet or what but I'll have to watch your video at home...

I can't say that I am a smoothie fan because unless I chew something I don't feel full. But Ali and Maya love their Jamba Juice something fierce so I suppose I am just an exception.

Deb, this video makes me miss you! AND what a treat to "meet" Ellie :) Yes, I want to see a tutorial. I know you love your smoothies, and especially in the winter, I struggle to get them down. Maybe a tutorial to see how to make the PERFECT smoothie would get my thinspired ;)

Deb (Smoothie Girl Eats Too) said...

Kyle- Thank you! Glad to have a kindred smoothie spirit out there :-)

Charlotte- you know we've been talking about me doing some sort of a smoothie how-to for a while, so yes, I kinda did have you in mind for this series.

Lynn- oh that's so easy: I've been there. Sadly when my 15 yr old Charlotte got cancer and we fed her through a feeding tube (true story), I was making cat smoothies 3X/day. I just had to make sure I didn't eat hers by accident. ;-)

McIntosh- Love the pun. Egg whites- hmm. Can't say I use them much in smoothies- but of course you could. Hey, bodybuilders used to add raw eggs, so why not? I would rather bake with them or make protein muffins. ALso, the blender I used when I re-introduced smoothies big-time was a little Back to Basics blender and was $20 at Target- I still LOVE it as it's got a blend&go container. Easy.

Ameena- I can get so full on smoothies that if I drank the whole thing I'd be Thanksgivingday full. It's the fluff and air and ice.

Lara- Aww, so sweet. Thanks. And I'll do a tutorial, but would never profess to make 'the perfect' smoothie!

O Deb, I love you! I've told you that before, but I'm just reminded after this video how fun you are. I miss you! I love your voice, you should have a radio show!
Mind you if I lost 90 pounds, all that would be left of my would maybe be left leg, but love you and ellie, of course!
I am the "chew my calories" member, but like you, I do think thick shakes dont really count in my book as liquid calories. I've had bloating issues with gums, but I hear the Mc Dondalds shakes are thick due to this seaweed thickener called carregeenan.I need to investigate that!

Deb (Smoothie Girl Eats Too) said...

Eden- What a sweet thing to say! And re. Carageen: Wikepedia says they are "are a family of linear sulfated polysaccharides which are extracted from red seaweeds." ...and that they've been used as a (vegan) additive in foods for hundreds of years. Before people were vegan- ha!

THere are a zillion thickeners that I haven't had time to experiment with. I do use agar for heating/gelling. The xanthan and guar are pretty easy to find, and they've worked for me, but I have heard of people who get bloating from one or the other.

I love the video, and I think it would be interesting to see you make a smoothie step by step. Ellie is sooo cuteeeee!!

Deb (Smoothie Girl Eats Too) said...

Julie- Oh yes, protein Ice cream is another video to make one day maybe. How much do we love that stuff?

Ari- Thank you! I have to agree about Ellie- she melts my heart daily until she's a horrible monster to Samantha and eats all my clothes. Then she turns sweet again. Sigh.

Deb,
It always makes me happy to hear your voice. I want to see you actually make a smoothie - maybe your infamous PB & J. Mine are never as big and fluffy. I need a step-by-step live tutorial. :)

P.S. Love the bangs!
