Water, only better.

I have a nasty habit to which I willfully confess.  I love Diet Coke.

Scratch that...Diet coke is sooo 2009.

I love Coke Zero (with Splenda). But as with most artificially sweetened products, it's only a matter of time before science finds all sort of pesky things about it.  Like that it will someday kill you.  Slowly.  And painfully.  So I try (albeit inconsistently) to reduce my intake when I can muster the resolve.  I still remember discussing my diet coke habit with my doc and he turned to me and said, "That SH*T' is bad for you."  Ouch.

Fortunately, I also love other carbonated drinks.  If champagne wasn't full of empty calories that would render me drunk all day, I'd probably be toting the Veuve in my Sigg.  Sadly, I need to be somewhat coherent.  Well, most of the time anyway.  So I'm onto plan C:  as in Carbonated water.

Carbonated water, club soda, mineral water, sparkling water.  They are all one and the same, yet the source and price can vary greatly.  Personally, I am not shelling out my life's savings for Perrier, and I got tired of schlepping bottles of Club Soda home every week.  Not to mention the fact that I don't like buying and using (even if I'm recycling) all of that plastic. So finally I broke down and bought a portable home-carbonating system.  Luckily, I have a friend who got me a sick discount at Williams-Sonoma.  You can get a perfectly decent model for about $100 from Soda Stream. You just need to replace the CO2 cartridges as they run out, which provides 60-110 liters!  They also offer a free exchange program:  you return the empty cartridge and they give you a full one.  Sweet deal if you ask me.

So now that I had this snazzy contraption, I felt like I needed to make the water a little more exciting as well.  Today I decided to make Muddled Basil Fizzy Water, with the help of my lovely assistant, Ellie.

Muddled Basil Fizzy Water:

Here is the lineup.  The Penguin by SodaStream looks like metal, but it's just playing dress-up.  Really, it's mostly just plastic.

The Penguin Carbonating system

By the way, I did not stage these shots- cats are drawn to anything plastic or shiny or small or big or just about anything of which you might want to take a photo.  A bag of basil qualifies.

What a ham!
To Muddle or Not To Muddle:  (Muddling is just a fancy bar-term for 'mush.')  You can buy special muddlers that are wooden and flat or flat/jagged on the end.  Mine went MIA in the kitchen remodel a few months back, so I improvised with something that EVERYONE owns.  Even full-fledged beer-guzzling/TV-dinner bachelors own one of these, right?

Not the ideal muddling implement, but it'll do in a pinch.

I added just a little bit of water before muddling:

You can go crazy and mash up the leaves to bits, or just muddle enough to get the essence released into the water.  Sometimes I like it moderately shredded, but not so much that I smile at someone with a huge hunk of basil between my teeth.  Not cool.

Apparently Basil-Muddling is all the rage with kittens these days...

oh, am I in this shot?
Finally, add ice and the rest of your sparkling water.  Garnish with a whole basil leaf or two.

No sooner did I turn my back to put away the water, but my 'helper' decided that she would sit on MY blogging stool.  MY BLOGGING STOOL!

Apparently, she was intending to write the post for me.   She might do a fine a job if it wasn't for the lack of opposable thumbs and a slightly smaller cerebrum.

Mummy, you have a run-on sentence here.  Puh, LA schools.

There are so many other options for jazzing up your H-2-0.
  • Fruits of all sorts:  Slices of watermelon, lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, whole (frozen) blueberries or grapes, muddled raspberries or blackberries, pomegranate seeds
  • Sliced cucumbers
  • Chia seeds (these will actually thicken up in your water)
  • Muddled Mint leaves
  • Mint and Lime...just like a Mojito without the booze and sugar (I know what you're thinking: what's the point?)
  • Obviously, you do NOT need fizzy water.  Plain water works well too.  Nice to use in a large pitcher for parties and BBQs also.
[**Edited to add: EEEEEEKKKK! I'm totally mistaken- forgive me readers... My guilty pleasure, Coke Zero is NOT made with Splenda, but with "a blend of aspartame and acesulfame potassium  (Ace K)" per the Coca Cola Website.  Thanks to my friend Heather for pointing this out!  I repeat:  EEK!**]
Q:  What other interesting additions can you add to water?  Do you stay away from the evil world of artificially-sweetened sodas?  Do you have any advice for someone who is trying to kick the habit?

I love the basil water idea. That sounds so refreshing. Plus, I have a giant basil plant that's growing like a weed; this seems like good use for it.

I love fruit in my water, especially watermelon. It gives it such a faint taste.

Tracey! You are so lucky! Basil=weeds? OMG, it's like green gold to me! I hope you make a mean pesto!

Lynn- Oooh! That sounds yummy- yes I remember reading about yours on your blog :-)

Look at little Ellie!!! She is so adorable!

I don't really do the soda thing anymore. Haven't for years. I have one about every 2-3 months. One for health reasons and two soda is expensive.

Never even heard of a Sodastream. Sounds like fun! Basil water who would have thought!

I actually would continue to drink soda if you like it. I continue to drink coffee with splenda at the horrors of many "healthy living" bloggers and others. Since I dont care what they think or what others think (well, I do a little but we'll go with me saying I dont care), I drink it anyway. It's not like I a smoke, drink, do drugs, eat gluten, meat, very much soy, any animal products and I recycle everyting, cloth diapered my kid, you name it, I feel that I have "earned" my "awful" vice, my coffee + splenda. Yes i also use white sugar and stevia and brown sugar and agave and really dont care :)

I say rock the diet coke and the franken syrups, they make you happy. Go for it!!!

    :)

loved our chat...thanks for that :)

I used to have a really "nasty" Diet Coke habit... Really, really bad. I "had" to do something and stopped drinking it completely for over a year. Now I have one once in a while.

I drink lots of water. I always have a pitcher with lots of lemon and cucumber slices in the fridge. And I like sparkling water with syrup as a special treat... :) Your water sounds great!!!

Before I was pregnant, I drank probably close to a 6 pack of diet cokes... in a DAY! That is craziness!! I went cold turkey and it was easy at first, but now I find myself craving at least one a day. I have a sodastream, but need to get a new CO2 thingy (thingy?). I'll have to check into the stevia flavored syrup lynn mentioned above.

I'm a plain water girl but a slice of lemon squeezed in on a hot sunny day is always good x x x

Agggggg - Ellie's still so tiny I can barely believe it!

I do love my SodaStream almost as much as I love the VitaMix and Coffeemaker, in that order.

I am finishing up half a 24 oz. Diet PEPSI as I'm reading this. It was my big treat this week.

I usually drink my water straight up but earlier this summer I was adding raspberry rhubarb ice cubes that made yumminess as they melted. Sometimes I'll get fancy and squeeze in a little lime but I heard it's bad for your teeth! True?

oh my god i'm in a SERIOUS relationship with my soda stream. like i go through withdrawals when the carbonated canisters run out and you could probably find me waiting at my door in anticipation for the soda stream man to drop them off.

lately i've been loving adding true orange packets to mine although it does almost explode when i do that which tends to be kiiind of dangerous. but other then that i'm pretty boring with just fresh squeezed lemon or lime.

i miss the diet grapefruit soda mix though! we went through that like none other

I think it's great you're relaxing your restaurant dining rules, although I never really thought you were high maintenance. I've been doing the same as well and mostly just take dishes as is. I mean I order relatively healthy foods, but if there is butter, etc. involved, I just go with it and find that I'm much more satiated. Anyway, glad to hear it's working for you. :)

And you know, I'm totally jealous that you got to hang out with Allie again. You both looked so beautiful and happy (I loved your dress from the post massage picture - so cute!). Wish I could have been there. Someday, okay?

Now onto your basil sludge. I didn't know you owned soda streamer. Again, jealous as you know I love my carbonated beverages, and I didn't know Coke Zero was sweetened with splenda. I thought it had aspartame. Gosh, I've been craving those things like crazy lately...and if they made a caffeine free version, I'd be in big trouble. Your basil drink sounds so refreshing, but I think the lime/mint idea sound even betta!

Hope you're having a good night. Love you!

I grew up on "poppy water" as we used to call it and I miss unsweetened carbonated water! I have appliance envy now. Even if the little penguin logo first looked like one of those radiation warning signs to me... ;) I like your mint and lime idea! I've been drinking lots of mint water but hadn't thought of adding lime to it...

Andrea- I'm so impressed that you cut back so much, and have maintained it for so long!

Em- don't forget about their exchange program- it's free (except shipping I believe)

Tam- 2-4-1 Durr. Now I feel stupid. As well as old :-D

Tiff/Carbz- I tried a Pepsi zero today- blech. No bueno. Also limes are fine as long as you don't suck on them. We see erosion in people who suck lemons/limes. Too acidic. But fine if diluted in water like that. (or tequila ;-) )

Julie- Great idea with True Orange. And holy yum on the diet Grapefruit- reminds me of Fresca from the 70s! yummm.

Heabs- THANK YOU for letting me know about the no-splenda deal with Coke Zero. I was totally off base. I guess since it tastes sooooooooooo amazing that it was splenda. Silly me. Welcome back friend and I know you're busy but thanks for the long comment.

Charlotte- Poppy water- hmm, does it make you high? And you're right about the irradiated penguin! :-)

    Your kitten is just adorable.

I have to admit, half of my brain was completely tuning out your words and thinking, "Look! Kitten! Awwww."

Mom recently killed our basil plant, but I plan on getting us a new one!
That water looks very... refreshing :D

I have been thinking about getting a sodastream for a while, just because I dont want to spend more money in sparkling water.
By the way, I love Averie's comment!! :)

I love Perrier - but it gives me the hiccups.

CUTE KITTEN. Gah. I'm squealing over here. Too bad I'm "not allowed" to get another cat. :(

I like a good cherry coke zero at a movie. It just feels right. That thing is pretty interesting. I need to look into that.

I am totally lusting after one of these babies. The carbonation is magical in staving off hunger for that extra hour or so!

I can't believe it...we actually disagree on something ;) It is my belief that Diet Coke > Coke Zero!

    Mary (A Merry Life) said...

    That looks really nice!

I guess I'm strange, but one day I decided I shouldn't drink coke anymore because it was bad for me so I just quit. Now I drink plain water and that's all and I'm completely good with it. Fruit in water is nice, but I never really do it.
