Gym Gypsy Diaries...When Fitness Goes Fickle...This week I'm a Dancing fool

Those of you who have been reading the blog for a while will know that I am a bit of a ‘Gym Whore.’ Oh, is that term offensive? Sorry. How about “Gym Hussy?” “Gym Tart.” “Gym Harlot.” No, all of those terms convey the wrong message. How about “Gym Gypsy?” It’s more indicative of my willingness to hit the road rather than hit the sack.

Bottom line: In attempting to maintain a significant weight loss, I’ve made it a hobby to embrace fitness. I'm lucky enough to be able to join a few gyms to keep things fresh, and I'm willing to travel for a great workout.

Not only am I a Gym Gypsy, but I’m an Egalitarian Exerciser. I am open to many new activities, so I tend to cycle (pun intended) in and out of many of them. I’ve fallen in and out and back in love with: Spinning, yoga, road cycling, mountain biking, kick boxing, boot camp, TRX, kettlebells, jump roping, weight lifting, stair climbing, hiking, rock climbing, step classes, Bosu classes, Zumba, Hip Hop, Good ole fashioned “aerobics”… the list goes on and on. Truth be known, I usually do not totally abandon any of the activities- I just favor one or two at a time. Sometimes it depends on an injury of the moment. Other times, it's which ever way the wind blows me. That reminds me, I'd like to try Kite Surfing some day.

Here I'm training for my first Tour de France

On to my current fave: DANCE

(Because you simply can NOT trust me to post without some sort of pet photo...)

"Wave your hands in the air like you just don't care"
Aside from some high school cheerleading, I have no dance background at all. The first time that I formally ‘learned’ to dance was about 15 years ago. Derek and I took a group Ballroom Dance class (please stop laughing...I do have feelings) called Lou’s Fun Dancing (Ok, you can laugh now). Lou was a old-yet-fit guy, married to a younger, hot Latin girl who was also his dancing partner. The pairing was kinda creepy, but they were great dancers and it was fun to watch them. Yet, the waltz didn’t quite do it for me. As taught there, the rumba, salsa, meringue, foxtrot and cha cha were fine, but they were a bit slow-paced. Eventually we stopped going when we got into competitive synchronized needlepoint (kidding!)

I gave dance another try at the gym about 7 years ago: mainly salsa and hip hop. Arguably, it was more fun this time around, but some of the classes were a bit too complicated and besides, I wasn’t quite ready to get down with my bad self. I felt self-conscious and awkward. Dance was once again shelved.

Then, just when I needed it most, serendipity stepped in: During my Dad’s last few weeks of life (a time when I really needed the gym for my mental health) I showed up for my beloved step class only to discover that it was gone: *POOF* after 7+ years.

Just.
Like.
That.

Instead of our amazing Angie, there stood a young guy named Odell, who was about to teach a dance class of some sort. Not step class. Dance.

I had choices:
  1. Curl up in a ball and wail like a child
  2. Start screaming at no one in particular
  3. Turn on my heel and walk out
  4. Stay and see what happened.

I decided to stay.

It turned out that this class really took me away (yes, like only Calgon can) and made me feel free and happy at a time when life was sad and uncertain. I had to concentrate on somewhat difficult moves in order to do them properly. And it was just plain fun to shake my ass. Dance Therapy? Perhaps. Loads of fun? Definitely.

Let it be known that I am NOT a dancer. I just enjoy dancing. I don’t know any of the moves. I just follow the teacher and hope that no one gets hurt. Sometimes, I leave drenched. Other times, it’s only a mild calorie-burner. But the smile-factor makes up for it.

I don’t know exactly what clicked for me regarding dance this time around: the timing, the teacher, the style, me in 2010 vs. me in 1993. Now, it doesn’t bother me to pop, body roll or pump it out. Before, these moves would have felt ‘embarrassing.’ And if the junk in my trunk jiggles- (and it does)- C’est la vie. At least I’m having fun.

(OK, maybe I did like dancing a little bit when I was a teenager...)

Please don't ask why I'm wearing a bronze head-band. Oh what? You say that they are back in style?

Another plus for changing up the routine from time to time: I get to look at all of my gym schedules as if I just joined yesterday: a whole new world of ‘brand-new’ classes have magically appeared.

Just.
Like.
That.

I want to leave you with the link to a post that blends the discussion of balance with a little bit of fun. It was a guest post on Janetha’s Meals & Moves from Lisa P of I’m an Okie. Click here and get ready to bustamove.

Q: What is your favorite fitness activity? Are you tempted to try something new? Do you dance?

I'm calling you a Gympsy and leaving it at that.

I just got back from Hydrofit so I am following a bit of your lead. I think it's good for one night a week, but I'm not getting wet twice a week.

I love trying new fitness classes, well, I should temper that. No, I dont unless I have a good feeling it's not gonna be a time waster b/c as a mom i dont have time to waste. Not like my pre kid days where i had all the time in the world to experiment, take tons of classes, etc. Now it's wham bam get in and get out with a great workout, also must consider the mental escape benefit too. It's all gotta be there.

BUT if i can find a NEW type of class that gets me all that i am looking for, it's like discovering a hidden gem.

Do i like to dance? Only with a really strong drink in my hand on vacation. LOL

Hello! I have been lurking your blog for ages and I have finally decided to create a blog of my own and start commenting! You can check out my blog at http://tartandheathered.blogspot.com/

I once tried a hip hop dance class with a few girlfriends, they loved it. I felt constantly off-beat and awkward. However, it was a great workout and helped me take myself less seriously!!

I am a slave to spin its my favorite class especially when its held in a dark room with disco lights music on loud, love it! I also love pump and body step and circuits. I am all for trying new classes but tend to fall back to my favorites.

Love the photo of you on your bike what a cutie you were!

You are wearing the headband because that was from the Olivia Newton John "Let's Get Physical" era!! (yes, you can thank me for putting that song in your head)

Looks like the cats are doing well - hee! I see that at least once a day with mine...usually around mealtime...always good for a good smackdown!

I don't belong to a gym so no new classes for me. I love trying new DVD's at my house but will confess that the last one I tried was Billy Blank's Boot Camp...I never made it to to the actual Boot Camp DVD...the pre-Boot Camp was so hard and required so much coordination...I was just sort of flailing around. And I was in the military and went to REAL boot camp!! How does that happen?! lol

So glad to hear about your dance class...sounds sooooo fun!!!

Hugs, Christine

This is hilarious! Personally, I like "gym tart" for some reason.

"Lou's Fun Dancing" LMAO!!! Seriously. How clever!! I love that you took that class.

Brent and I took ballroom for a while. He's a great dancer. Our fav was the tango but I'm with ya on the waltz. I need some DRAMA in my dance. I love to dance. I've never been great but I wasn't horrible. I danced all through highschool and I even was on part of a dance group at my college called, "wind dancers". Okay now YOU can laugh!

Fun post Deb. Loved it!!!!

Your post made me want to try a new class! Now if I can just get myself there... My brain knows that "mixing things up" is important, but I have to admit that it's usually hard for me to step out of my comfort zone...

I love your headband!! And I adore dancing! There was a time in my life that I thought I was going to be a professional dancer (swing, since you didn't ask). Eventually I had to face the facts that a) I am a mediocre dancer at best and b) pursuing my dancing dream didn't jive with the rest of my long-term goals so I had to let that one go.

That said, I'll take any opportunity to dance now that comes my way;)

laughing. my. ass off. at several sentences.. mainly the needlepoint one. and is that a cat fight or a cat love session? i hope the two kids are getting along OK. i DONT dance. let me repeat, I DONT DANCE. it's pretty horrible to watch me try. but hey, if you aren't a dancer and you can do it.. maybe there is hope for me. although, you had the cheerleading under your belt. not me.

even if i dont decide to go dance the night away, i can take something away from this post: to not be afraid to try something new. i really want to try yoga.

p.s. it was lisa p! haha. great post though, thanks for linking back.

LOVE YOU!

I luuuurve trying new classes and activities as well. Although I still haven't caught the dancing bug. Like you in '93, I just don't think I'm "there" yet. Some of it is that I'm embarrassed by it, but a lot of it is just my inability to sway my hips. There is no flow to that movement for me. That's why I love step, no hip swiveling necessary ;)

Also, I prefer the term "gym trollop" myself ;)

Sava- thanks!

Carbz- GYMPSY! Genius! And I'm with you- not a huge fan of swimming. Unless it's about 104 degrees, then I don't mind.

Averie- LOL on drink-in-hand dancing :-)

Heather- thanks for de-lurking! I swung by your blog and said 'hey!' :-)

Tam- yes the disco lights are so fun- I've only taken a class like that at the YMCA in Sarasota Florida! Never anywhere else. And yes, I have loved Body Pump too :-) I forgot about that one.

Christine! You were in the military and did real boot camp? Wow, that's super impressive. Thank you. RE. Billy Blanks- yes his moves are like they are on crack. And he has a SON who teaches a dance class that I wandered into about a month ago!! Spooky. And thanks for outing me on my age- you are right about the ONJ era. Sigh.

Jenn- WIND dancers? You'll need to tell me why you were called Wind Dancers- but that still sounds super cool. i can totally imagine Brent being a great dancer. I should get a pass for you to come to Thousand Oaks and take Odell's class with me. I'll email you.

Andrea- It's tempting to stay in the comfort zone, especially as a busy mom like you are. Kudos for training as consistently as you do!

Charlotte- LOVE Swing. Love to watch wonderful swing dancing. One day perhaps I'll take lessons.

Janetha- Get your OM on girl! And thanks for the headsup on Lisa P. I changed it.

Hayley- this is my current favorite photo ever in the world- I think I need to make it my iphone default.

Lynn- Back then I think the headband was more Flashdance and less hippie :-)

Julie- You are so right- sucky teacher, sucky class. :-)

SUSAN! Gym TROLLOP! LOL!! Too darned hilarious! I think that hip swiveling can be learned. :-)

This post made me laugh out loud several times. And I LOVE the term gym gypsy. I even tweeted it to Self Magazine.

If you EVER see me dancing, you can be assured I have had far too much to drink.
