OK, so you don’t need booze for this one. That’s why the gods created rum extract.
I wasn’t planning to post today, but when I made my morning smoothie today, I just had to share. Behold the simple ingredients for this smoothie:
(hits “Save Draft”…not taking any chances)
- ~ 1.5 cups of leftover coffee (I cut myself off at 2 or 10 cups roughly, then the rest has to go into a smoothie, as if it no longer counts as ‘coffee’)
- 1 scoop Chocolate flavored low-carb protein powder
- 1 T cocoa powder
- Squirt of stevia
- 1/2 tsp rum extract
- 1/4-1/2 tsp of xanthan gum
1/2 tsp of guar gum. - Mid-blend: a sprinkle more guar when I realized that the smoothie was thick enough but still had ice chunks…the xanthan seems to thicken, but the guar smoothes out the ice chunks. Don’t ask me why- I have no idea.
Calories: 150 (yes for the whole Vitamix container...this is why you have plenty of calories left over for toppings-woot)
Protein: 22 g
Carbohydrate 6.5g
Fats 2.5g
Fiber 2.5g
The finished product:
For those of you who are not familiar with the size of a Vitamix, I have put a random-yet-accessible card on top for size comparison. The Vitamix is absolutely not a necessity unless you want to make protein ice cream. For this you need a tamper and a very high powered motor. Otherwise, any decent blender works perfectly well.
(Totally off topic: funky font, right? It’s called ‘Poor Richard’, which cracked me up…so I had to use it today).
Also next to the Vitamix is my little travel blender: The Back to Basics Blender Express. It leaves smoothies more icy than fluffy- sometimes that’s preferable.
FYI- you are witnessing about 10 cups or over 2 liters of gut-busting, air-and-ice-whipped smoothie fullness. I nurse this for the entire morning. Sometimes I tire of it before it’s finished and toss it or save it for the next day.
Crazy thickness- I eat this as above- with a spoon.
.(hits “save draft”)
Because I would go clinically insane without some carb-y crunch, I sprinkle on some delicious cereal as a ‘garnish.’ Here are some Heritage flakes-yum! There was also some of my favorite nut butter: Trader Joes’ Almond Butter with flax seeds. Run, don’t walk to procure some of this crack.
.
Obviously a lazy morning as the clock shows 10:30am and there is no sign of a workout happening today…I sense a much-needed “Rest Day” in the works.
.
Here is all of the bounty- I store some of the shake in my Back to Basics containers as they are so convenient. All of these go into the freezer and I stir them up every 15 minutes or so, until I’m ready to eat/drink them.
(hits “save draft” and thank goodness, as Windows Life Writer decided to take an unscheduled coffee break)
Someone else is having a “Rest Day” too. Oh wait, Every day is a rest day for Samantha.
Happy Sunday Folks!
Q: Do you like coffee drinks either with or without booze? Do you try to avoid caffeine?

I read your recipe as "15 cups" of coffee! I thought, "Oh that crazy caffeinated Deb..."
Bahahahaha.
That looks delicious and ridiculously voluminous. I totally forgot about adding booze to coffee! T'would make a good dessert. With a creme brulee on the side.
I got the idea for a coffee smoothie after reading my 'No Nonsense' magazine from Beverly International. So...when I make my morning coffee (just a one cupper - 12 oz) I save about 6-8 ounces and use it in my smoothie with 3 ice cubes and Ultimate Vanilla Protein Powder (UMP) from Beverly International. I will have that as a mid morning snack. It is oh, so yummy. Like a latte frap! No added sweetener. The UMP is plenty sweet.
<3
I really only like coffee straight in the morning; otherwise, I'm into other things. Funny enough, I saw the title and my mind went straight to booze. on a sunday, I'm ashamed of myself :)
Katherine
OH my goodness - who doesnt like coffee plus booze - thats crazy talk.
On other topics - I recently purchased a vitamix and I want you to know it is 47% your blogs fault that I HAD to have one.
I want to say thanks for the smoothie-spiration though, bc I LOVE it - oh, and that you owe me about $275
jus kiddin!
I love caffeine. Um a LOT of caffeine. I love it a lot.
Samantha is the best!!!
where do i begin? good call on clicking "Save draFT"! yes. preventative measures.
ok, poor richard font didn't show up for me not sure why, but i know what it looks like because that is the font i used for my wedding invitation labels. yep. heritage flakes is probably one of my top 5 cereals and that is saying a lot. that smoothie looks right up my alley as i have consumed 60 oz of iced coffee today. no lie. i could have used some protein with all that caffeine. oh well. i think that answers your question. love samantha. and love you. XO
Holy crap! How much ice did you use in that?! And how much time do you spend in the bathroom? I have to use decaf, unfortunately, but I'm definitely trying to make a blenderful tomorrow.
I've been giggling at your Tweets the past few days. Thanks, I needed it.
Allie- Yes that font is a bit confusing- 15 cups of coffee would be a bit much :-)
Tenaya- I do love your Beverly International powders- wish they were easily accessible and less pricey!
Katherine- LOL- no need to be ashamed.
Brittac- you cracked me up with "that's crazy talk" and sorry about the vitamix debacle- check's in the mail :-)
Kristina- :-)
Janetha- I can't believe you have poor richard- what are the odds?
Mama Pea- A LOT of ice (metric ton perhaps?) and A LOT of time in the restroom. No joke. Decaf works FINE!!
LOVE the font :)
Wow, 150 calories is great! Hmmm, that leaves room for calories for my adult version with REAL rum ;)
hahaha Lara cracks me up. Love using coffee as my liquid too, this entire vita mix would not only fill me up, leave room for toppings, give me energy+protein, take me a while to drink it all, BUT also give me a major bathroom session. Which is always a good thing in my book. Coffee? Protein powder? Gums? They all are diuretic inducing for me. :)
Love this recipe though. The vita mix is seriously a wonderful thing. I'm having separation anxiety right now as I type. (10 days till I go home!!)
I had to read the recipe twice to figure out how you got that much volume of smoothie into your Vitamix! That is SERIOUSLY awesome!!! I need to start playing with those gums too!
Also, a few weeks ago I was looking at some of your archives and one of the ones you wrote about weight lifting just really hit a chord with me. I started adding weights into my workouts and am goin' all Rocky on my coworkers now. They think I am super weird with my green smoothies and fruit only snacks...wait till I'm all PUMPED UP! OOH RAH!
Thanks so much for the inspiration!! Christine
I added a tsp of coffee to my smoothie today and it was fantastic defo going that way tomorrow. yours looks soooooo god! x x
Thinny- yes, I believe the adult version would be nummy.
Beeks- um, yes on the bathroom- see Mama Pea's comment and my reply :-)
Christine- get down with your bad RockyGirl self! I love love love hearing something like this- you totally made my day- thank you! :-D
Tam- sometimes I do a coffee smoothie when it's too hot for coffee (oops, guessing that never happens in your neck of the world! hee!) Miss ya!
Hey does guar gum have any calories?
Dana
http://happinessiswithin.wordpress.com/
Dana- according to Daily plate, guar has 3 cals per 1/2 tsp.
Deb,
Oh my, now that is a smoothie! I don't think I've ever made one that big. Must try filling my Vita-Mix to the brim next time!
So funny b/c I posted coffee flavored protein ice-cream this morning. We are so in sync!
Love you. :)
