The Playground Workout: Kids Optional

It’s 4:30 in the morning and I’ve already been on Windows Live Writer for about 40 minutes (don’t ask). All of a sudden, the entire post I wrote including about 204,547,572 love links just went “poof.” So... sadly, my first Wordless Wednesday post summarizing my California Road Trip will need to wait until next week. (Live writer is beginning to earn its place in the Hall of Shame next to Blogger…help…need coffee).

Instead, I offer up a workout for when you don’t feel like hitting the gym, but have a park nearby and want to get your sweat on.

I found this spot in Lompoc, California on the latter part of my road trip

It’s basically an enclosed play area- about 25 feet for each “side” of the square. This will serve as your workout arena. Kids, are you ready to play?

.

The gear: 20 lb Kettlebell, water, two 5-pound weights, jacket for rainy morning and backpack to carry emergency energy bars in case I should get hungry in the hour I’m away from the kitchen. Heaven forbid.

I did a circuit- doing about 15 minutes of cardio, then 15 minutes of strength training, then repeating the moves...total workout: about an hour. You’ll want to stretch afterward of course.

The Cardio: Kettlebell swings followed by one ‘lap’ around this square for each of the following moves:

  • High Knees
  • Walking lunges
  • Butt-kicks
  • Squat Frog jumps (sink into a squat, then jump forward a foot, repeat…I was sore for DAYS thanks to this maneuver).

The Strength (It was chest, delt and triceps day):

  • lateral (delt) raises
  • front (delt) raises
  • bent-over side bent-arm (delt) raises
  • overhead triceps extension
  • pushups
  • triceps dips
  • bent-over triceps extension

.The Triceps Dip station above

.

.

Yeah, the park rangers looked at me curiously, but hey, it’s my workout and I needed to hit the open road early once again.

Q: Do you prefer indoor or outdoor workouts? Any favorites to share?

What a creative way to get in a good workout!! That's awesome!! I think I prefer outdoor workouts, but right now it's IMPOSSIBLE in Atlanta. It is H-O-T!!

This looks like a fun slash painful workout! When I was at the University of Florida I used to love using the stadium for workouts. I would run stairs, use the bleachers for stepups, do decline pushups on the ramps, lunges up the ramps, etc.

I miss college :(

I swear Deb, you can make a workout anywhere!

Sorry to hear about the Live Writer drama. I feel bad after recommending it so highly ;)

I prefer working out indoors. What can I say, I like the conveniences of air conditioning, in a place where kids are not optional ;)

I love playgournd workouts! Living the life I do, I spend half my life on playgrounds so I have ample opportunity to sneak in a few reps here and there. Only problem is that I never get an empty playground to myself so I'm always having to hip-check some toddler off my step so I can finish my tricep dips;)

Deb,
So sorry about the Live Writer issues - I've only ever heard good things about that program, and I'm bummed it let you down. :(

This workout is great. I can see it now - just strap the HEABlet into a swing and get my sweat on. I love it! You're always so practical with your workouts - thanks for sharing them with us. :)

Playgrounds are great workouts! In Oklahoma, outdoor fitness gyms are being built all over Oklahoma City. It's a nice change to get your work out in and also gives people who may not have access to gyms get on the road to health.

Outdoor workouts for sure!!! I was doing tricep dips and pistol squat progressions the other day at Boys Scouts. The parents looked at me like I was nuts. Me? No way!

Fabulous workout, girl! I love it is so creative, not in the confines of a gym (though, hey, I love the gym...I'm just sayin)
Have you thought about becoming a trainer? You would be awesome!
Looks like you have gotten more into kettlebells, eh?? They are fun times...
Lots of HEARTS!! <3

Outdoor yoga! It is the most liberating feeling I think I've ever experienced personally. :) LOL. But other than that I like both indoor and outdoor, you can't really compare a 4 mile hike, to a 45 minute sociable workout in our everyday gym, or the camaraderie and distinct smell of a yoga studio to the feeling of running on the pavement. Ya know? They're all good things. :)
