OK, please don’t rail me for tossing up a super lame post (even if it is). I just felt like sharing a little trick that I sometimes do to make my toast “go further”. Derek seemed to think that it was so clever, so I figured that you might find it useful too.
If I am limiting calories or carbs or perhaps saving up a few calories for Nieves (hope you can read Spanish), I will sometimes do the following: give my toast a “split personality”. Har har.
You toast the bread as per usual:
Call me crazy, but I love my toast dark (carcinogens be darned!)
Then you cut through it lengthwise so that you end up with two extremely thin but normal sized pieces of toast. It will be dark on one side and un-toasted on the other:
Open sesame!
You can let them “cool” if you are British (or at least if you are my husband who doesn’t like his toast warm…I know, I know, don’t ask me). This can be accomplished by using a toast rack or just resting the tops together, making a little Tee-pee. I have discussed this with other Brits and it would appear that Derek is the only one who does this even though he thought it was a country-wide craze :-?
Now you have TWO pieces of bread for the kilocaloric price of one- WOOT!
End of Tuesday’s Toast Tutorial. :-)

Incidentally, I have been a bit awol again due to lots of travels… currently we’re in Mexico, seeing Coldplay tonight- can’t wait!
Not a real post, just a quick photo-journey for some of yesterday’s antics:
We LOVEEEE to take public transportation when we are away from home. We like to go where the “real people” go and eat where the “real people eat”. As awful as it sounds, we avoid tourist areas. So we’ve been on lots of these:
el autobús
Derek got serenaded by this caballero:
Who says that machismo is alive and well in Latin countries? Derek has no problem swaying to the sounds of the man with the guitar and the voice of silk.
But the inevitable happens:
Someone call Narcoleptics Anonymous
And I decide to be a goofball and make fun:
Laughing at Grandpa having a snooze…
The mocking continues:
Whoops, someone’s awake
BUSTED!
We had this type of scenery:
To arrive here:
Chapala, Mexico
Lake Chapala
And eat here:
For some of this:
Goat soup, carne asada & home-made corn tortillas: ADM=Ay dios mio! (the Spanish version of OMG). Best part? The Daily Plate has Goat Soup in it’s database. Fab.
On that note, I’m about to eat my own arm, so it’s time to find some comida before catching our next autobús to Zapopan for Coldplay! Ayyyyy!
Q: Have you been to Mexico? Do you do weird things to toast or other carbs? I guess it could be considered cruelty to carbs, but I often “scoop” the “innards” out to save on calories in bagels and baguettes. I have even seen them do that here in Mexico with their Tortas Ahogadas=drowned sandwiches…to make more room for the meat inside. Nommmm!

So embarrassed to say that I never tried this or even thought about it with my toast. But it is a fabulous idea! Stretch the carbs!
Maybe I'm a big uber dork but I think this is genius! The lower calorie breads are usually more expensive and more processed. Why not just cut a big doughy piece in half?!
I love hearing all your tips and tricks!
While I don't chop up my toast like that, I can say yes to your other question... Yes, I have spent quite a bit of time in Mexico. I spent two semesters abroad there back in college. Seeing the pics of the little restaurant brought back memories... :)
Great idea!! I can't stand cold toast. I had no idea the british preferred it cold! Yall are quite the travelin duo. Hehe, love the pics of Derek sleeping... And your mexican dinner looks awesome. Have lots of fun at the concert!! :)
Love it Deb. Sometimes, there is just nothing like a good piece of toast. :)
Taking public transport and eating with the locals is the best way to learn about a city. I always like to avoid all the touristy areas as well. We would be make good travel partners. :)
Yes, been to Mexico. I studied Spanish in Cuernavaca for a couple of weeks. Beautiful!
Wow have a fab time, I love coldplay I saw them a few years ago, I've never been to mexico but would love to x x
Ay ay ay. You are too funny with the toast - I would probably cut myself. I could do it with Chris' gluten free bread b/c he cuts hunkin' slices and each half would end up being a "normal" slice of bread (aka a double Deb slice). Anyhoo, yes, I've been to Mexico many times, mostly Guaymas as a kid, but Mazatlan on Spring Break (no pics, thank God). We love both off the beaten path vacations! I reallllly want to go to Sayulita! Maybe 2011!
What the!? I love how you casually mention you're in Mexico to see one of my favourite bands. Ya know, no biggie ;) Listen, if you bump into him, tell Mr. Martin there's a Canadian girl who is a perfect match for him, seeing as I don't spend three hours a day lifting 1lb weights :P
My sister went to university in Cuernavaca for a little while, which meant a trip to Mexico with my mom! It was aaaawesome. Lots of Corona + quesidillas were consumed. Actually, probably my favourite vacation ever :)
Have fun at the concert!!!
Oh, and I am currently toaster-less since The Great Kitchen Fire :(
Ohhh my! Is that birria (sp?) in that last pic!
GREAT toast-splitting idea. My Brit dh likes his toast cold too. Funny how it sits there for 20 minutes in the toaster and the next thing I know, he is buttering it. Don't know how many times I've gone to toss it and he yells, "I was going to eat that!" Such a UK thing ...
Love Coldplay! Hope you are having a fantastic time.
I have been to Mexico once past Ciudad Juarez and TJ. I am half Mexican too so that's a travesty. One day I will take a proper vacation down south :-) I do plan to have a mariachi band in the park for my 40th though ...
Enjoy and coma algun nieve para mi!
I've never heard of splitting a piece of toast. I'm surprised it seems like it might be considered a common sense sort of thing...or not. ;-) I've missed most "common sense" ideas in my life anyway tho'.
I've been to Mexico (Mexico City). I spent a summer there with a boy I met on a cruise when I was 16. Ridiculous. I spent all day seeing sights and all night in the discotheques. Mexico is pretty much the reason I cried for joy when I gave birth to a boy. I've also driven down to Ensenada and spent a week in Cancun. Occasionally I consider becoming an expat.
double toast, mexico and coldplay = all sound wonderful to me!
Holy crap Hawaii to Mexico? That's quite awesome Deb!
I eat the 35 calorie bread. It's nothing special but you can't complain about the calories!
I LOVE the toast splitting idea! Just this morning I was having eggs and toast and was lamenting the extra cals in my 2nd slice of toast, but how in the world would I sop up the runny egg yolk without a 2nd slice? Now I know!
Is that what the expression "breaking bread" means? Give us this day our daily bread already! Or something like that...
Make sure to stock up on Mexican goodies! The legal kind, I mean.
I think your toast tip is awesome! Plus, more surface area for marmalade;) Glad you are having a fun trip - you guys are an adorable couple!!
Fancy! I don't think I could do that without making a huge mess.
I used to do the bagel thing, but I just ate the innards first. Haha! I also eat the edges of cookies before the chewy center.
Clearly, my rituals serve no purpose.
you are my favorite person.
The title of your post is awesome!...To help cut down on carb consumption, I do this for sandwiches because there are many breads that are cut pretty thick. I think it's a great way to have your toast and eat it too :-D
the pics of you guys on the bus are awesome!
Just asked Mr. Thinny and he has never heard of a toast tee-pee, but we are both intrigued ;)
When I was living in England and the sandwich thins were all over the blogs here, I was cutting English muffins into QUARTERS to try to emulate them. Same kind of idea to your toast splits ;)
Love those bus pics...particularly the gradual progression of getting BUSTED! ;)
Didn't realize you guys had so much traveling planned this month! Lucky you! :)
P.S. Never been to Mexico and probably never will. Funny story from my parents that has traumatized me for life. I'll tell you some day ;)
great toast trick! the teepee method is too funny!
the Mister and I have seen coldplay a handful of times -- they are so amazing live!
Those pictures from Mexico are gorgeous! I love sunsets, sigh.
I love Mexican food, would like to try the real thing one day!
Toast splitting: GENIUS. You should really patent that method...
I, too, like that "burnt" taste. Burnt toast, burnt cookies, burnt veggies....but the BEST is burnt marshmallow. A little story for Deb: this past Thanksgiving, my aunt brought an uncooked candied sweet potato/squash casserole. My mother stuck it in the oven and being the wino I mean SOCIAL HOSTESS she is, totally forgot about it. Until the room started to smell like bliss. The sweet potatoes were fine, but the whole marshmallow top "had" to be scraped off and replaced with new 'shmellows.
I did the scrape-age.
The trash can stayed shmellow-free.
And take a wild guess what I had for dessert.
Seth, Carb, Heab, Jenn, Michelle- fun that you have all been south of the border (Michelle- you need to do Mexico properly), can't wait to hear Thinny's story! :-)
Michelle- yes birria (sp?) nom nom.
Tired- 35 cal bread??? what 35 cal bread!!
Susan- maybe you can get a toaster in your new place :-)
Mish- yup I'm with you on the runny egg. (and welcome!)
Steph- thanks for stopping by! I've followed you for quite some time :-)
Thinny- you will need to show me your English muffin quarter-trick.
Katie- I'm coming to your house for Thanksgiving this year. :-) I'll bring the booze for mom.
I actually think that idea is pretty damn good!! Posts like these are always helpful. :) Though I'm not quite sure I understand the "cold toast" thing...
