This morning, Derek and I were fast asleep in our rented cottage on the North Shore of Oahu. The house phone rang. I muttered obscenities under my breath about douchebags calling on a Saturday morning at 5am, but Derek was wise enough to actually answer the phone (I would not have done so).
It was the woman from whom we rented the cottage. As you now know, a ridiculously huge and devastating earthquake struck Chile and now there was a Tsunami headed our way. We were ordered to evacuate immediately.
Our cute rented cottage: never mind that the bathroom, shower and closet are on the bottom floor- accessible only from the outside staircase. We loved it nonetheless.
Please excuse the unmade bed- we were in evacuation mode.
I’m not used to being warned about my possible disasters. In California, you live with the knowledge that the Big One could happen any minute. So believe it or not, we have several emergency kits packed at home. Due to the fact that our kits are a few years old, the Lemon Zest Luna Bars may be a tad hard. But hard calories are still calories. Lemon Luna bars are a requisite part of any emergency kit.
We hastily packed up. All of the things that I brought to Hawaii happened to be on the “emergency lists” with which I was familiar: plastic garbage bags, zip-lock bags, wet wipes, hand-sanitizer, utensils, Tupperware containers, rubber bands, clips, warm clothing, and of course- non-perishable food. The cottage also had a ton of paper towels, toilet paper and duct tape (for what I’m not sure- but it is ALWAYS on Emergency lists) as well as a whole slew of other things that we grabbed on the way out the door- a bucket, cleaning supplies, pillows, blanket, 5 gallon water bottles…the list goes on and on.
Naturally, front and center on my mind was food. Last night, we had loaded up on all sorts of fresh food from the market to cook over the next couple of days and hell if I was leaving that behind. So leave it to SmoothieGirl - at 5am during a Tsunami warning - to boil up half a dozen eggs, sauté two lovely whole Hawaiian cods and blend up a Jay Robb Smoothie to take in our filled-to-the-rim rental car. Oh, and I micro waved the two potatoes and one Hawaiian Sweet Potato as well. Note: Okinawan Sweet potatoes are almost not worth bringing in your emergency kit. While I love the purple color inside, they are dry as a bone- kind of akin to chewing on sawdust. Consider yourself warned for your next Hawaiian disaster. Or vacation.
First we stopped at the ATM because in a true extended emergency, your credit card is about as valuable as the plastic from which it’s made. Cash talks and plastic walks.
We didn’t empty our accounts- just got enough for a couple of huge cups of coffee and an Egg McMuffin (this will make sense later)
Luckily we had a plenty of gas (the lines were enormous) and drove to higher ground via a Health food store that was just starting to get busy. (We kiboshed the idea of going to Foodland when we saw the line was at least 100 people long) Here we stood in the face of uncertainty. We didn’t know if we’ll be camped in a field for several days, or if the rental house will be habitable (or standing) later tonight. So we bought some extra eats that I honestly cannot explain. Please don’t make me try:
- Macademia nuts with Spam
- Spam lite in a packet
- Local macademia/coconut energy bars that had about a zillion calories each
- Have-A Chips (the best chip ever made on the planet without question)
- Tiny Canned Vienna Sausages for Derek
- Huge Hot dog buns for Derek’s tiny sausages (TWSS)
- Lemon Zest Luna Bars (remember- it needs to be a part of every emergency kit)
- Lemon cake- I guess lemons are protective beyond our present scientific knowledge
- More Tortillas (we already had a huge packet)
- More ‘crisps’ for Derek
As we packed up the
Why don’t I eat bananas more often? Why do I save it for a natural disaster? It’s carby- big whoop. So is an apple, but I eat those on the regular.
Packing up the
We got into the car and headed up mountain. All of a sudden, we were safe. Just. like. that.. One minute we were in a situation that could have rendered us, well, dead. Now we were pulling into a shopping mall to hang out for goodness knows how long. It was weird.
As luck would have it, I was already dressed in my athletic clothes- I didn’t know if I’d have to run up a mountain with a small child or a dog… Oh look! Is that a 24-Hour Fitness I see before me? (cue angels singing)
The other odd thing was that at this higher ground, it was pretty much business as usual with the exception of the following:
Starbucks: “Sorry, we are Pa’a”
“Up here” there were no lines anywhere except to buy gasoline. The supermarkets were not completely filled with shoppers. Even 24-Hour Fitness was open. This was fortunate as I like to deal with crises in my life by exercising. I will admit that I felt a bit creepy just “carrying on” as if there was not a care in the world. Honestly, you’d never know that death and destruction could be happening within minutes in other parts of the very state.
Turbo Kick Class mates were Hootin’ & Hollarin’ and waving their hands in the air like they just don’t care. Brothers in arms? Worrying about your brethren on lower ground? Not so much.
Business as usual, unlike Starbucks, ‘we are open,’ and very busy. Hey wait! Who’s that on the Multi-machine in the corner? Could it be….?
…..Nawww: Just a dude with the same popular Union Jack cap.
Tidal wave, Schmidal wave, I’ve got some biceps to grow, bruh.
So now we sit, ironically, in a McDonalds. If this happened a dozen years ago I’m sure I would have been elbow-deep in a meal consisting of a Big Mac, Supersized Fries, Apple Pie and Ice Cream Sunday, with nuts, natch. No, really, that was my Go-To meal when I was livin’ large (pun totally intended). Today I broke into a papaya and ate a huge carrot, washed down with two HUGE vats of coffee.
I’m lovin it. Not being killed by a Tsunami, that is.
This post brought to you by free Wi-Fi at Mickey D’s
Wow! A Faux-Fountain at McDonalds! We evacuate to the swankiest of places. (Edited to add: It was a REAL fountain!)
And now for the food-blogger portion of this post: Behold the beauty, the artistry, the iPhone photography…
Papaya and GINORMOUS cuppa joe from McD’s
Poor Baby- it’s been a long morning.
I’ve been texting Allie from Pimp My Protein Shake who happened to be vacaying on Maui at the moment. She is currently “evacuated” to a higher floor of her hotel. Speaking of Allie and my simultaneous Hawaii visit, I really need to work on my stalking skills. It is far more effective to stalk someone if you are actually on the same island.
Latest word: the big Tsunami turned out to be a little Splash. No injuries, damage or death. Thank goodness. As soon as I hit “Publish”, we have a date with our own version of a Filet-o-Fish: some sautéed Hawaiian cod with a Spam Macadamia Nut topping stuffed inside a huge hot dog bun. I predict a nap on the beach as well.
I leave you with some photos from the last couple of days. Fingers crossed that there will be more happy times such as these:
“Someone” is excited to arrive at HNL
Steps from ‘our’ cottage
British Beach Bum
This is as much “leg” as you’re gonna see from me.
Sunset 2/26/10
PS. Apologies for the long post- it’s as much to relay all the sordid deets for the familia and friends as anything else.
Q: Anything exciting happen to you today?

Wow - craziness!!! What an amazing story to tell. I'm glad you're ok and there was no damage. Enjoy the rest of your trip!
The last time I was at McDonalds I ate my fruit cup & bran muffin while my hubby chowed down on a McMuffin. You're not alone...
Holy crap! So glad ya'll are okay. Enjoy the rest of your beachy vacay!
oh my word!
(yes, apparently i'm actually 83 and use expressions like "oh my word")
i'm glad you're okay, and a little disturbed to see so many spam-esque products still available for sale in our country... shudder...
enjoy the rest of your trip, and maybe when you're back we could find some sort of "over-packer's anonymous" meeting or something to go to...
My word that it crazy!! So glad things have turned out ok and heck yes fresh food must be saved!
Deb-I don't think I've commented before(?) but you kept me on my toes the whole time I was reading this! I kept asking me husband, "wait, was there even a tsunami?! Come read this post!" You are so entertaining! :) Glad to hear you are ok and hope you enjoy your vacay!
holy sh*t!!!!!!
Deb. I cannot believe you're freakin' blogging...and it was a great post and I had plenty of chuckles, but please, be safe, and yeah, just blog again and keep us posted on things in all your spare time as you're in emerg evac status, lemon luna bars and all. In CA we had to be mandatory evac'ed with the san diego fires...with a newborn, and all the baby gear, animals, etc...it was a nightmare and nothing to fool around with when those sirens start blaring. so please, be safe my sweet friend!!!!!
I am so glad you blogged. I was seriously worried about you!!! I left for church at about 5pm Eastern time, and the tsunami was still supposed to hit you guys - all I was thinking was I hoped you were ok!! I hope you can enjoy the rest of your trip!
Deb,
So glad both you and Allie are okay. Thought about you both all day today!
You crack me up. Oh my gosh, we are so alike. I totally would have been hard boiling the eggs and preparing the fish as well, and I LOVE McDonalds coffee...even more than Starbucks!
Ha ha - I knew the Hawaiians loved both Spam and mac nuts, but I didn't know they combined them. Wow!
Also, beautiful beach photos.
Well geez, it takes a tsunami to really bring out your opinions and personality. Oh snap, Anon!
Seriously though, all kidding aside, you're now the third person I "know" who happened to be in Hawaii. I'm just glad you're safe.
I'm DYING that you worked in a work out - that is devotion! I love it.
Where'd you store that cod all day?
Oh, thank goodness you guys are ok. Been thinking about you all afternoon. I enjoyed this post so much...you really can make lemonade out of lemons :)
Lemon Luna Bars...got it. Backing my emergency bag this weekend ;)
I love the "happy ending" photos--made me smile. Wait, and seriously, you managed to take pictures of Muscle Man at 24 Hr without him noticing?!
I just love that you worked out in all of this. I don't know why...it's just so awesome ;)
Hope you guys ENJOY the rest of your trip with no worries whatsoevah (other than if you should have wine or a mai tai).
Thankfully our only disaster today was my folks locking themselves out of their room with the chain locked, with all their luggage inside as we're getting ready to leave for our flight.
My husband and I had a brief, "just in case, I want you to know I love you..." moment this morning as we waited for the wave that fortunately never came.
Deb, did you bring your cod to McD's and ask them to make you a grilled fillet of fish, hold the bun? And hold the fish, you brought your own cod?
When life is uncertain, go for the gold. Maui gold. I literally ate at least 7 guavas today, a banana, potato chips, fresh coconut and a pineapple. Glycemic index be damned.
Glad Smoothie Girl and Hubs are safe!
Glad to hear your A OK! Must have been scary I like your lunas for an emergency good thinking lady! x x
I have a funny picture.. If you want me to send in still please send me your email address at pcbidwell@comcast.net...
SO happy to hear you're okay! Gah, hearing those sirens must have been rattling. I can imagine how surreal that whole experience must have been. Thankfully, you had your trusty Lemon Zest Lunas. Also, I would have to agree that biceps trump tsunamis in the situation, bruh ;)
Hope you have a more relaxing and SAFE rest of trip!!
So glad yall are ok!! I was worried about Hawaii yesterday and was sort of freaked out when they said on the radio that the tsunami could happen in 15 minutes. I'm relieved to hear it was just a little splash. I've totally packed my own breakfast and eaten it at McD's while Andrew chomped down on their hashbrowns. Oh and as I was researching mcgriddles for my post today, I noticed that hawaii has their own special mcgriddle with spam on it, haha! ;)
how did i not even know you were going to hawaii? and how come you are always jet setting to somewhere new? and why didn't you take me with you?
anyway, questions aside, i am glad you are ok! and it was just a splash. although chaotic emergency situations make for a funny post.
well, all your posts are funny~ contrary to what anon thinks... bursting with your personality and lovely sense of humor.
how much longer are you there? have fun! love you!
Deb,
I'm so glad you're okay! This is such a crazy story - at least you have that, right? A good story?
By the way, I can totally see you boiling eggs and microwaving sweet potatoes at 5am. Neurotic, probably, but had you been camped out in that parking lot for days, I'm sure your neighbors would have been trying to barter their own Hawaiian spam/nuts for your eggs. Since I would not have been up at 5am being so neurotic, I know I would be! :)
Lindsay
Wow! So I didn't even know you were in Hawaii, and I was getting all these tweets on my phone regarding you and Allie and started to freak out! Gahhh I am so happy you guys are okay. Mini heart attack, insert here.
I am in love with this post. Everything about it screams "food blogger!" from the emergency food, to being in your workout clothes, to working out during a tsunami warning. And of course the lemon luna bars! You crack me up Deb. Always. And no worries about catching up on my blog! Hah I haven't even told the blog world what my prof thought of my kale salad yet... :) hehe
And ooh goodness me, the insanity that you and Allie were both in Hawaii at the same time. Hilarious. You guys are really meant to be! I love it. Wish I was there toooo. xo!
I'm glad the big wave passed! I've got friends on the Islands out there. They all seemed totally cool with everything going on when I chatted on FB with them earlier.
Nothing exciting here in Obamaland other they my thermometer registered at 43 degrees today!
Oh wow! Ok, nothing that happened to me this weekend was anything near as exciting as that! I'm so glad you are ok! Your account cracked me up - I love the way you think. TurboKick during a Tsunami? We are indeed long-lost sisters. Which means, of course, that you must take me with you to Hawaii next time you go!
My weekend was akin to picking lint out of my belly button compared to yours. Wow! I'm glad you are safe.
You are H.I.L.A.R.I.O.U.S.
Wow Deb!! I'm so sorry you had to go through all that, but thank goodness you guys are safe. That is scary! Enjoy the rest of your vacation!
hahaah omg I lovd this post! you crack me up :)
I am SO glad you are ok!! I cant imagine the siren noise that went off and how freaked out you two must have been!
I cant even remember the last time I was at a Micky D's I think it was a road trip and I got an iced coffee and they even screwed THAT up!
stay safe!!
