I needed to be in San Francisco for a continuing education course, the hubs needed to be there for a convention and my friend, the lovely Lara from Thinspired Blog just moved to the bay area from the UK. Sweet.
Like the last time we met in October in the UK, Lara and I got a double dose of each other...trust me, this is a good thing. One meeting is just not enough. A lot of jabbering needs to be accomplished and at least this time the hubses (plural for hubs, right?) knew what to expect. Last time during a rare moment of silence between sentences, Derek turned to Matthew and said, "Wow, it's bad enough with just ONE of them." Thanks Luvie! :-?
The first night we went to a fabo restaurant in the SOMA part of the city called Bacar. Luckily the hubses really get along well and we closed the place down after 3+ hours of constant chattering over a bottle of wine and amazing food (see Lara's blog for the food deets). Incidentally, Spellcheck informs me that "hubses" is not a real word. Spellcheck also informs me that "spellcheck" is not a real word. Now you know.
The next day was almost too exciting for words. I'm still just a bit awestruck. Derek was attending the Fancy Food show, as he is in the packaging/marketing business. He scored us tickets to go as well. But the catch was that we had to "work it" and establish contacts for him. OK, we figured that we could do that. HA!
Heaven help us- look at all this bounty!
Well, send two food-lovers/bloggers into a room with an obscene amount of gourmet food products and tasting samples and all bets are off. We kept getting sidetracked scoring single serving packages (UH, DID I DIE AND GO TO HEAVEN!?) and nibbling amazing noshes. Every 10 minutes, we kept having to firmly repeat aloud to each other and ourselves... "RE-FOCUS, RE-GROUP... We are here to "work it." We are here to "work it."
Luckily both Lara and I ate our breakfasts late so that we wouldn't be ravenous when we walked in the halls. Good thing we did. Feast your eyes on the following photos (doh, sorry!)

I love how they tell you how many "steps" you'll take for each aisle. Sadly, 948 steps burns a mere 38 calories. Sigh. On top of that, for every 15 steps you stop and ingest 200 calories in samples. I'm NOT liking the math here.
Eye candy for the tummy
The world's tiniest ice cream cone....WITH SPRINKLES!! You are witnessing one happy girl!
Gelato- the tiramisu taster rocked my face off
Frozen Yogurt- Lara got the berry flavor. I got vanilla. I spoke at length to the woman about "stabilizers" and gums...expect to see some new experimentation in the SmoothieGirl kitchen!!!

At first we were so overwhelmed by the enormity of it all that I kept saying that I think I need to curl up in the fetal position and just quiver in the corner while I processed everything. However, after a while, the old "repeated exposure therapy" set in and we were no longer audibly gasping at tables full of high-end gourmet olives, hummus, cheese, chocolate, crackers, cookies, muffins, greek yogurt, frozen yogurt, ice cream, cakes, granola etc. With that sort of culinary bounty, it soon became easy to take just a tiny bite or share a single sample.
However we did 'lose our cool' whenever we hit nut butter producers, and our experience at Justin's Nut Butters was very memorable. When I saw the Justin's stand, I began jumping up and down like a little girl and taking photos like a crazed fan. Eventually a big, hunky rep realized that we weren't just there 'for business' (no one in the food business gets THAT excited over nut butters). Lara then told him that we are huge fans and food bloggers. He immediately dove into his private stash and pulled out two HUUUUGGGGGEEE jars of almond butter for us. MAYJUH SCORE!
We were so excited about the lifetime-supply jar (well, ok... two weeks' supply), that we asked if we could have our photo taken with him. He graciously obliged. Then we asked him how long he'd been with the company and he began to tell us how he started making his own nut butters in his garage because he wanted to get more protein to fuel his mountain biking. Lara immediately replied "Really? You sure look like you get enough protein!" (eyelashes batting wildly). At that moment, the penny dropped and we exclaimed "Wait, you mean, YOU ARE......... JUSTIN!!???" He confirmed that yes, he is in fact Justin and we felt mildly stupid for not seeing the huge name tag around his neck. He was a total sweetheart and I believe that he was somewhat amused to see that he has fans out there. He then gave us more individual sized samples (yessss!), including a not-yet-released HAZELNUT CHOCOLATE butter. Uh, quick announcement: Lara and I are running away with Justin. Sorry, hubses.
On second thought, three's a crowd- buh bye Lara, it's been real!
Rather than have a "proper" meal, we just grazed and nibbled and probably didn't do any worse caloric damage than we would have done at a sit-down lunch. It was sheer heaven on earth and after about 5 hours, we completely pooped out. And we had only covered about half of the "regular" Gourmet wing and half of the Organic wing of the show! Amazing. We even forgot to hit the Torani stand! That's how overwhelmed we were-gah!
At the end of the show, Derek met us and dropped the thermonuclear bomb that we were not allowed to take any samples out of the halls! WHAT!!?? Why on earth would they give away all those samples if they didn't expect you to take them HOME! Nobody could possibly eat that much food in one day!
And this is no lie: Lara and I each had about 8 pounds of food in our bags. So we furiously repacked all of our most coveted samples to the very bottoms of our purses underneath used snotty tissues, wet umbrellas and half-eaten apples. This was done under the assumption that the Sample-Police would be too disgusted to dig underneath all the muck.
We were both prepared for battle, however. The phrase "over our dead bodies" came up in conversation more than once. When we finally left the exhibition halls we held our collective breath and thankfully, nobody checked our bags. I will readily admit that I lost a few years of my life and sprouted a few gray hairs over that panic attack.
We walked back to our hotel and Lara picked up some items she left in our room. After she left, I got a text from her saying that our new friend Justin was schmoozing in the bar! Hee hee!
As if the weekend with Lara was not already fabulous, I came home to find THIS from her and Matthew...waiting for me on my doorstep for my (25th) birthday on Wednesday ;-) ......
Thanks to Lara for many of the wonderful photos above, for driving in the pouring rain twice to spend time with us over the course of a weekend and for being a terrific friend!

Q: How do you approach situations where you know you'll be sampling much food? Do you eat a light meal beforehand so that you're not ravenous, or do you save up all of your calories and dive in head-first?

I am so glad that I've found your blog. Loving it.
I would be in heaven. That looks amazing. How exciting to have all of these fun things to try and tell us all about :)
When there's lots of food..I still fail. It's a mental thing where I need to try everything. Me and potlucks--not so good.
But I am working through this.
I just came across your blog and yowza!! That was one fun and delicious post. I'll keep checking you out too. Your weight loss story is inspiring and its great to see people figure it out the healthy way.
I read Lara's recap and had to come over and see yours, too! This looks like the best day ever! Glad you two had such a great time!
I'm going through stages of grief. Denial that I wasn't there. Anger that I didn't get to smuggle free samples in my Mary Poppins' carpet bag...
"I love how they tell you how many "steps" you'll take for each aisle" - but did they take into consideration that you probably squatted and lunged down each aisle?
OMG!!!!! What an amazing day!
I cannot believe they let you TAKE the samples. At Veg shows and places we go to you can so I have no idea what the deal is (plus I work for a company that does Expos). I wonder if it's some weird SF food rule.
I've been to gift shows and stationery shows (mind-blowing)but this one takes the cake ...no pun...oh yeah, I guess it was intended.
So cool about meeting Justin!
WOW, that event looks amazing! Looks like a lot of fun :) When sampling food I like to keep things simple and try to drink as much water in between to keep me hydrated :)
Omg why wouldn't they let you leave with that stuff?!? I'd have a heart attack.
If I ever go to food convention I'll remember to bring an extra large purse!
Justin is WAY HOT. Whatta hunk!
hahah.. apparently trifecta isn't a word either. thanks spellcheck. i LOVE that coat you've got on and that is weird because i usually hate red! i guess i just love you so much and it makes me love the red coat? yes, i will go with that. the fancy foods show looked so fun~ wish i could have been there!! i hate ribbon candy but boy is it pretty. rad that oikos was there! i have heard mixed reviews on their new flavas and want to try for myself. love the photo with justin~ how exciting! and that is CRAZY about the samples. WHAT?! i'd be outraged.those strawberries are so pretty. this comment is SO SO long. and when i go to sampling things... i just go all out! xoxoxo happy friday!
OMG soooo jealous that you got to meet Justin and try his new nut butters. I love his products! The quinoa dark chocolate sounds mighty tasty. When I go to events with a bajillion samples/dishes I try to carry around some water and take little bites here and there!
I hate you guys. :) WHY do I not live in the vicinity of any cool foodies???? GRRRR.
I love the 'celebrity sighting' story - awesome. And thank god you managed to sneak all that swag out of there because I seriously would have just plopped down and ate it all in the lobby.
OK, this is cracking me up...
On second thought, three's a crowd- buh bye Lara, it's been real!. Hahaha, Deb, you are such a humourous 25 year old. ;)
The food show looks amazing, and I'm so glad the nut butter jar made it out alive. I seriously would have been willing to shove that one in my underwear.
I know that if I was to attend such an event, it would be really smart to eat beforehand, but my adventurous side would probably go completely starving and just go to town on Justin...um, I mean the food.
WOW! What a fabulous day I'm soooooo jealous! Especially with the almond butter I wish wish wish I could get my hands on barney butter over here in the uk! I'm off to a diet and fitness show on sunday and I'm pretty sure there will be samples and you know what I'm gonna take all I can get! hehehehe! x x
There is just too much here...
Your 25th :) bday present
Justin
8 lbs of swag (OR more!)
Life-sized football cake
CArmel fountain
Protein bars..
and Lara.
Wow. WHY dont I go to this stuff?? Why dont i even know about it?! OMG SO much fun and when I am Back in CA, I am allllll over this kinda stuff. Will you be my tour guide?
xoxo
Deb, your recap is hilarious! Except the part where you cut me out from the Justin pic. Not cool. Hehe.
Bacar was just so fun and special. Thank you so much for everything. Loved every minute of it.
I think your exact quote when trying the quinoa chocolate was "Predictably delicious!" So cute. So yummy.
I think we did great with the sampling. Honestly, I would probably not have been that controlled had I been there alone or with Matthew. You taught me a lot...mainly to choose what I REALLY wanted to try (i.e. the pancakes were non-negotiable!).
It was so fun to read your take and get to live it all over again! :)
Omigosh hungry now! I'm glad you had fun.
Happy Friday to you!
Omg, I can't believe you met Justin!! That's awesome. Not awesome, they expect you to eat a whole jar of "sample" before leaving the hall. Okay, maybe I could do it, but still...
I am so jelous!!! How awesome!
I would have died at that olive bar... oh my. :-)
I am so excited to see new chemicals in the smoothie kitchen. I adore experimenting with food! (I was trying to get ahold of locust bean gum and careegen but they're really expencive!)
Food Heaven for sure! Looks like you all had a great time. I have to admit, I am bit green with envy ;-)!
Wowza...all that sample product would have been pad the bra with it worthy! Glad it didn't come to that point!!!
Wow all that food looks so amazing - and of course so does Justin :P
lol glad you had such a good time!
OMG that looks like so much fun! LOVE getting samples and it sounds like you two got the royal treatment!
If I know I'm going to be sampling all day I'll just try to eat something light in the morning, but not too light where I'm starving an hour later.
Oh that looks like too much fun! I would have died. Love all those foods, haha! Love your blog as well.
Cheers,
LCotter
OMG, that looks amazing! I need to go to a food expo someday...one day...
Love all the - your one lucky lady :)
It looks like you had a really fun time, i wish i could have been there.
Hi Deb!
Thank you for your sweet note on my blog. It looks like you and Lara had so much fun at this fancy food show and dinner. I'll definitely keep reading; I'm all about SF bay area bloggers!
xo
I have officially died of jealousy!! LOVE blogger meet-ups! And chocolate quinoa?!? And the strawberries? You live a rockstar life, my friend.
Hey Deb, I just got my two gums that HEAB and Janeetha have been chatting about, I'm looking for a kick ass smoothie recipe, have anything delightful for breakfast?!
De-lurker, newbies and old friends- thanks for all your fun comments!
Heab- Yeah, down the underwear with the swag for sure- or Erin's idea to pad the bra- why didn't we think of that!?
TriciaDark- I'm leaving your post up assuming that it doesn't mention the words "Pen1s" or "v1agra" in Japanese. Irrashaimase! (she says, hoping that it actually IS Japanese)
confessionsofahealthnut ...good timing! I just posted a great smoothie recipe that I stole from allie- see link below:

Have a wonderful day!
XO
Fun fun fun! I would have totally done the same thing about smuggling the swag out of the exhibition hall!
