Why shoot a video about jumping rope?
- To share one of my favorite workouts in the hopes that it you will give it a try.
- To let people know that jumping rope is one of the best cardio activities known to mankind, and Rocky Balboa.
- To show people that if I can learn to rope, then you can too. It took me a little while of practicing (ie weeks), but then it 'clicked.' when I took my jump rope on a trip with me and it served as my main form of cardio.
- I was having a 'Good-Hair-Day' and therefore had to make a video.
- If you are new to roping, expect to hate it at first.
- You will trip up about 380 times in your first attempts and that is totally normal, if not encouraged.
- Use a rope that is appropriate for your height: Step on the middle of the rope and the handles should come to somewhere between your arm pits and your shoulders- feel what is most comfortable for you.
- Do not jump high in the air. This is a common mistake that people make at first. Your feet should just barely hop off the ground.
- Most of the motion will come from the wrists-avoid flailing arms and elbows.
- Once you get the basic move, you'll find that it's actually EASIER to mix up your moves: scissors & jumping jacks keep things different.
- Some advanced moves: Butt-kicks, side-to-side jumping, high knees are harder and you'll get winded faster.
- Practice, practice, practice...then....
- All of a sudden it will 'click' for you too. Then you'll be hooked.
Q: Have you tried roping since you were a kid? If you are a seasoned roper, how long did it take for you to get the hang of it?

You are too cute in your videos! Love this. I have not roped in quite some time. You are so right, there is a nasty little learning curve, but once you overcome it jumping rope is a killer workout. Those plastic speed ropes are the best! So cool that we can take them any where. Perfect for travel 'cause they weigh nothing!
I liked the videos! I haven't jumped rope since I was a kid, but always looking for good workout options (especially for bad weather when I can't run... also the equipment is cheap!)
I had one question - how long should you jump rope for? Is it equivalent to something like stationary biking or running, or more intense? (I guess I should just go get a rope and try it!)
Thanks for posting the videos!
Funny, I just tried jump roping the other night as part of my workout! I sucked royally at it, so not sure how much of a workout it was! LOL! Anyway, thanks for the great tips - flailing...yeah, I need to work on that!
Your hair is FAB :)
Sallie- Listen to your body with the amount of time you spend roping. Boxing and bootcamp classes usually use it as a warmup. But when you are learning, it does pay to invest some time into it: shoot for 20 minutes or less when you first begin. At first you will probably spend more time just waiting to catch your breath than anything else. Good luck! Let me know how it goes!
Marisa-I totally sucked big time when I first started. TOTALLY. I could barely get the rope around 2 or 3 times without tripping. Not that I don't suck now! ;-)
Marla- "nasty little learning curve"...that is such a brillian statement, I wished I thought of it- thanks!
Honestly the only reason I don't jump rope much is because it's so.flippin.hard. Probably the reason I should do it more often.
I was taking classes at a legit boxing gym for a while (I have my own gloves and everything) and he definitely incorporated jumping rope into our workouts. Man I miss boxing!
If I could move like a boxer with a rope then I would be all over it!
I entered a competition about 16 years ago and won for my costume- I was dressed as a clown, and was stoked about it- but we didn't win anything for our routine- thinking back on it, I wish we'd put more effort into our routine, but that's a 9 year old girl for you.. haha
Beautiful hair! I used to jump rope in HS at Cross Country practice, I forgot about it till just now, thanks!! It is an awesome workout, and nothing is required, which I love cause on nasty days I could still escape the gym rat race and do it in my garage :) Thanks Deb!!
Your hair looks great! :)
Love the video. You are so natural on camera! I have not jumped rope since I was small, er, little, er, young. So, it's been a while ;) I'll give it another shot.
hahaha.. i love the freeze frames youtube picks to start the video on. like that first one.. check it out. so funny. LOVE the vids. your voice is music to my ears! and i love love to jumprope! we should have a rope off! one thing i never was able to do was double dutch.. so fancy. lucky for me i just won a progresso soup digital jumprope. better put it to use! i loved the jumping jack variation~ i need to try it. LOVE it when you do videos. more, please. :) LOVE YOU!
I'm definitely a double-jumper. As in "1, 1000, 2, 1000." Slower than liquid hot magma!
And more importantly and less pleasantly, jump roping makes me pee my pants. Yay motherhood...
And I LOVE, LOVE, extra LOVE the videos!
i really wish you had the rocky music playing in the background of the videos haha. think about it ;)
can you be my jump roping sensai?
Deb,
I love hearing your voice once again, and yes, beautiful hair! :)
OK, so I was supposed to be jumping rope this month, but I don't own a jump rope, and after watching your videos, I'm thinking jumping in place probably didn't quite have the same effect. Probably should have spent the $5. ;)
More videos please.
if i start roping, will i have good hair days too??
my downstairs neighbor is gonna LOVE this newfound interest of mine...
I LOVE this post. For 3 reasons:
1. Your hair IS awesome. Also? taking a vid just because your hair is gorgeous is totally something I would do.
2. I heart the jump rope. Mostly 'cause I'm still living out my glory days as the second grade rope jumping champion.
3. It is so fun to "see" you!! You are so freakin' cute!
Therese- yes! It's super hard at first. Kind of like that walking business when you were about 1. All of a sudden it clicks. Oh, and it doesn't get much easier cardiovascularly if that's what you mean :-)
Adriendmelaine- omg soooo impressed that you had a routine! And that you jumped rope dressed as as clown. Something I definitely aspire to do some day.
Lindsayruns & Thinny- let me know how it is upon re-entry.
Allie- oh dear. I think they sell depends next to the weighted speed-ropes.
Janetha- yeah the freeze frame is hilarious- it looks like I'm "Shoooshing" someone! hahaha. Oh yes, I totally would love to have a rope off. wow, better get me some tricks under my (weight) belt! :-)
Julie & Mallory- I lol'd on these comments- so funny! Roping sadly will undo the "good hair" in a jiffy. :-(
Heab- seriously, jumping up and down has nothing on the rope. Can't explain it, but it's totally different.
Charlotte- you are sooo sweet. And I'm totally impressed that you are a champion! Do they do roping in your TurboKick??
Those are some mad skills Deb!! Awesome videos. I havent roped in such a long time but it looks like it would be such a fun change from my normal routine. Great stuff. Im always on the look out for new ways to work out! I have a feeling I might trip and wipe out a few times.. ha! but Im willing to give it a try. Looks like fun. Have a great night!!
I haven't jump roped in a long while but have one waiting for me at home. It's hard to do it inside the house but maybe you just inspired me to take it outside when the rain halts enough!
Roping is such a good workout. Haven't done it in forever though! Maybe I'll give it a go again :)
It might be 10:30 pm in a small apartment with thin walls, and I might not even own a jump rope- but your video made me want to start jumping! Hmm...I wonder if my computer cord is armpit length?
I left my jump rope out at my parent's house and my mom found it. She wanted to try it and now she's obsessed (which is a good thing). She's so cute. She was proud that she could do 100 w/o stopping :)
I am jealous of your straight shiny locks. Seriously! Goooooorgeous!!!!
I actually own a jump rope and bring it with me when I travel! It's great for when I'm at hotels without gyms, or staying at a cottage or with people I know. I like using it for cardio intervals during bodyweight and plyometric workouts.
Did you ever have a skip-it? Those things were awesome!
Crystad, heather, runwrite- if you rekindle your love, let me know!
Kendel- oops don't wake the neighbors OR use your computer cord!
Jglee- soooo impressed with your mom! Way to go!
Susan- OMG I had to google the Skip-it but I'm sooo going to get one. They even sell some that have GLITTER, which is the non-edible form of sprinkles!! :-)
Thanks for reminding me about jump rope. Great videos. It's made me want to go buy one now!
I brought my jump rope on my trip!
smoothiegirleatstoo.blogspot.com; You saved my day again.
