What happens when you send a Southern California native/fitness enthusiast to Canada for a week in minus 17 degree weather? She puts on so many layers of clothing that it takes 20 minutes just to get dressed, then heads outside for a workout.
As I walked into the town of Banff to rent my show shoes, I noticed the Pedestrian Crossing sign. Doesn't the "walking man" look like he's straining against the elements? He can barely stand up straight! Have a look:
Compare the sign above to one I found from somewhere in Europe:
I decided to try my hand (er, foot) at Snow Shoeing. I had heard that it's a mad, crazy calorie-torcher, yet I'd never had the opportunity to try it. I am here to tell you that if you are ambulatory and can layer enough moisture-wicking clothing to tolerate the cold, this has got to be the easiest 'sport' aside from straight-ahead hiking.
Here's the deal. Snowshoeing is like hiking with oblong tennis rackets on your feet. That's it! The "shoe" prevents your foot from sinking into the snow. And it allows for a normal gait. You use normal (waterproof) hiking boots. So really it's just like walking. As the snowshoes are wider than your normal shoes, you do have to walk with your feet a bit further apart, so you do look like you have something stuck up your rear end. Minor inconvenience to be sure. Also, hiking/ski poles help with stability.
You don't want to turn your body too much without bringing your feet in the same direction (as with skis) so that you don't torque your knees. I managed a 2 hour snowshoe hike without incident, only to tweak my knee AS I REMOVED MY SNOW SHOE when I finished- GAHH!!!
Here's a pictorial:
Snowshoes poised for action:
This is a snowshoe:

This is my hiking boot inside the snow shoe. When seated properly it will rest all the way to the front where the cage ends:

It couldn't be easier to attach- just step in and tighten the straps- like seatbelts for your feet:
Here is the trail for the first day-the frozen river bed. Without any hills, it was the perfect place to get accustomed to the snow shoes. When I got a bit nervous about walking ON the river (ie where it seemed to be thinner) I jumped off onto the trail adjacent to the river. The 200-pound man driving the 200-pound snowmachine assured me that it was safe, but I got nervous when I saw RUNNING WATER! Eek.

You can see my little (ha ha) tracks on the left. Someone hiking on the right didn't feel the need for showshoes obviously
The snow looks exactly like rainbow glitter when you look at in toward the sun. I'm not sure I've ever seen anything so beautiful! It was like an explosion in aisle 4 of Michael's Craft Stores. I'll never take for granted those cheesy, glittery Holiday cards again.
Snow in Sunlight=Sparkly Rainbow Glitter. Stunning. (This photo was taken with my iPhone- the best camera I have ever owned)Here is my packed lunch- a PB&J on lavash- what else.

Here is my requisite two-bites-from-the-corner photo:

Hey the lavash looks like a monster. Oh no, he's going to eat the mountain!
Am I the only grown adult who plays with my food?
Yum, Looks like a medium cup at Pinkberry
I couldn't understand why my vision began to get a bit blurry after a while...too much exertion perhaps? Nope.
Next day it was more snowshoeing, but on a cross-country trail at Lake Louise. I took a shuttle to a bus to another shuttle to get to the "Chateau Lake Louise", where I rented my snow shoes. I got a map and headed off.
Winter WonderlandThis was hilly, and wow, what a workout. Everything seems to be tougher in the cold. Once I was wrestling my gloves back on after taking a photo and I noticed my heart rate was 135-HUH!!? Are you kidding me?!
After a couple of hours of exploring, I ended up back at Lake Louise:
After a couple of hours of exploring, I ended up back at Lake Louise:

I returned my snow shoes and peeled of 64 layers of clothes and read the (free!) newspaper while sipping a very mediocre cappuccino. Honestly, the Bucks has better coffee. Right Susan? Now, Here's Derek attempting to hike in the snow:

Incredibly gorgeous pictures!! Especially the sparkly rainbow glitter... :) I've never seen snow like that in real life. We don't have enough snow here for any kind of snow sport. I've tried skiing in North Carolina before and I hated it. I don't like ice skating b/c I fall too much. I guess it's a good thing I live in Georgia!
BEAUTIFUL sights!
Beautiful pictures but I think I'd rather sit here in front of my space heater and look at your photos than experience it firsthand. Can't believe the icicles on your eyelashes!
Gorg pics, Deb! GRowing up in MN then Chicago, I can appreciate cold weather and nature's beauty...but glad I dont live in it. But Ill come to Bamffffff (or would it be Brrrrr) LOL anytime :)
And I pulled a Deb this morning and auto-accidentally published a post before it was ready. 95% ready and thank god I had edited out all the cursing (kidding) but seriously, it's just a reminder to never ever write anything that couldnt instantly get sent (by accident) or not! At least for me :)
Ahhh!! I want to go out West SO badly!! My mom goes to Banff about once a year and always raves about it. I think it's time she brought me ;) My mom is also an avid snowshoe-er. Something else I've never done! My fave winter sport is outdoor ice skating. Love the feeling of gliding across the ice :)
And I maaaaay be munching on some Wonka Tinglerz right now :D
Oh my gosh look at all that snow! The pictures are gorgeous!
Well I can assure you Deb, AZ is MUCH warmer. I'm talking 65. So, maybe a small sweater will suffice.
This post is freaking me out! Aahhh cold cold cold. The eyelashes got me. And so much snow! But you succeeded again in making it blogworthy with your usual Deb pizazz touch added. :)
Seriously in love, again, with the lavosh. YUM.
Oh my gosh. Your lavash monster attacking the mountain absolutely made my day! Thanks for that :)
And even though your pics are pretty, there's enough freezing snow here and lashicles a'plenty to last me a lifetime. If I were you, I would be clawing to get back to the sunshine! (At any rate, it does look fun.)
And I play with my food.
BEAUTIFUL pictures!!!! just stunning, thank you for sharing!!
I havenever been snow shoeing but want to so bad!!
Gorgeous! My folks stayed there last summer. I would just love to visit!
Those pictures took my breath away! I saved the first one as my desktop background - hope you don't mind! SO GORGEOUS!!
And your lashicles are hilarious. Next time, tho, I want to see pictures of your snotsicles:)
Haha, that description of the walking man cracked me up! You're too funny. Snow shoeing sounds cool if you're down with the cold. I am not, but power to you for getting after it :)
LMAO. "must.. cross.. street.." you are so right about that little guy! and BRRRR is right. and it cracks me up~the opening bit about bundling up and going to workout. of COURSE that is what you do! it is what i do too :P the photos are STUNNING. ahh.. banff. i want to go there but i am not allowed. i have some friends living there, sure wish i could visit. what are the chances you tweak your knee when removing the shoes! hahah.. irony. hope it did not hurt too bad? ah. glittery fresh, untouched snow. it is something i live for. that photo just gave me a snowgasm. i seriously get SO excited when i see snow like that. ahh.. love utah. hahahahahahah your lavash eating the mountain holy crap will you marry me? youre so funny. great photo with the lashcicles~burrrrr! OH i was hoping we would see your cute new snow bunny outfit! psh. what a downer! ah derek in that waist deep snow (would be waist deep for me) makes me jealous! you should have taken me in your pocket!
fave snow sport is snowboarding, but you knew that :)
xoxoxox LOVE YOU!
p.s. did you mail that OMGOMGOMG to my old addy? i bet you did...
Where do I begin? I must have Derek's hat!
While I'm channeling my inner PlayBoy Bunny, you're off doing much healthier activities such as Snow Bunnying.
I learned the hard way not to wear mascara while snowshoeing. It freezes into 700 billion eye stinging particles.
You'll have to show me how to photoshop The Lord of the Rings background into my photos too! Those views cannot be real, right?
Stunning pictures!! I have never been snow shoeing but it sounds like alot of fun. I live in SoCal too so Im not sure about all that cold weather though. Ha! But it still looks like an awesome time. Thanks for sharing those photos. They are fantastic!
Most beautiful workout ever Deb! So wish I could have been there with you. We could have had a Lavash war. :)
The comparison of the pedestrian street crossing signs...so funny. We North Americans are always in such a hurry, huh?
I want Derek's Union Jack hat!!!!
beautiful pics! Hope you enjoyed your time up here and fortunately I believe you got out before the temps plummeted to about, oh, minus 50. I kid you not.
Pretty much any workout you do in the snow and on ice is that much harder. My votes are for cross country skiing (exhausting), sledding, and ice skating...
I definitely have Cali envy all winter long...
Ok, I'm going to have to come back and really read through this whole post later when I'm not watching a movie...but I wanted to comment because I've been waiting to see photos from this trip forever!
Love the lashicles...and the last picture of Derek is so cute! Kind of looks like a skiwear advertisement ;)
