When life (or a tree) gives you grapefruit, you don't make GrapefruitAid. Why? Because there is no such thing (I hope)! Instead, you put them in a pile like this:
Then, when you decide to skip the gym and train in the back yard, you look at the pile of orbs and say "Citrus Posse: YOU will be my personal trainers today!" You might jump rope (see photo) and then do some Bulgarian Split Squats (thanks for the idea Janetha! photo below).
Then you might play a little game with the grapefruit. Here's how it works: Put the fruit at the top of a couple of steps. Stand at bottom of steps. Perform two mini-squat-jumps up each step and grab a grapefruit. Walk down the steps, then lunge your way to a chosen spot where you will set it down. In order to set it down, perform a squat. If it rolls away, you need to stay in the squat position until you've retrieved it- hello isometric burn! Now lunge back to the steps and start over again until you've moved all of the grapefruits to their new home.
Watch as your heart rate climbs up and up and you have to literally stop to catch your breath. This is one of those workouts that I call Strenthiovascular. I can't decide if it's cardio or strength training. I will be panting and dripping wet by the end of it: cuuhrazy cardio. Yet my muscles are sore the next day thanks to Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness or DOMS. A true sign of a great strength workout for me. Not everyone loves DOMS, but I do.
Then, take a perverse delight in the fact that they filled up the space perfectly, even allowing the exact room needed for the agave "tentacles"! (I bet Miss Janetha would soo love that too!).
If you have time and want to move them back to their original spot, knock yourself out!
Then, if you want to work your upper body, you can grab the 20 pound planter box that you planted all those months ago (does anybody remember the cactus garden fiasco?) and do some bicep curls with them:
And you can realize that you are going to have to have a funeral for one little soldier:
Once you're finished with the workout, you need to decide what to do with the fruit:
- Cut them up and eat them
- Make marmalade, jelly or jam
- Juice them
- Stick them in your top and see if anyone notices
What if you don't have access to a lot of citrus? A deck of cards work great (just use 10-20 of the cards) as do small toys (belonging to a pet OR child willing to loan them out, of course).
PS. I hear Pomegranates work pretty well too, right Heather?
Q: Do you improvise your workouts? Do you have any good recipes that use grapefruit?

HeabVersary Giveaway Update!
First of all, thanks to all of the new readers who casually mosied by my blog the last couple of days It's fun to have so many enthusiastic new people leaving nice comments about Heab and my first-ever giveaway. Does that make me a giveaway virgin?! Guess so! Oh well, guess it was bound to happen eventually :-)
You KNOW that something special must have happened when your daily post comments go from 15 or 20 to hundreds! That's what I call "The Heab Effect".
Now, with much fanfare and a drumroll, here are the four nut butters that Heather chose and therefore the four nut butters that the winner will also receive...
1. Organic Brazil Nut Butter with chunks of Brazil Nuts.
2. Raw organic almond butter. Straight up plain. :)
3. Roasted hazelnuts with hazelnut chunks, dark cocoa powder, cinnamon, cardamom, and stevia. Nutella & Spice.
4. Roasted organic sunflower seeds.
Booyah!! What fun! I can't wait to get home to make these for my dear friend! I am currently in Canada, where it just jumped from minus 21 to minus 19 farenheit. If it wasn't so darned gorgeous, I'd be asking for your sympathy.
Anyway, I won't be home til next week- at that point I will pick the winners. If possible I want to involve our cat in the random choosing of the winner. Yes, Samantha LOVES her Aunt Heabie...and yes, we are THOSE pet owners :-) Anyway, thanks for your patience and your HUGE outpouring of love for Heabs and the nut butters! Click here and leave a comment because trust me, you don't want to miss this party train!

Whew, for a moment there I thought you were going to make your own homemade agave syrup from your cactus garden. There's NO WAY I can top that.
Speaking of tops...when life hands you lemons, well, you get the idea.
You have a grapefruit tree?! OMG, I love grapefruit! And I love the workout you did with them! So creative! :) Have a great time in Canada, hope you are having a good time!
Way to improvise! I'd also do a strength/balance exercise with them before I juiced 'em up:
Place the grapefruits on one side of you. Stand on one leg, squat a bit, pick up a grapefruit. Rise from the squat but remain on one leg, then squat again (same leg) and move the grapefruit to your other side. Repeat for all of the grapefruit (or at least 6) then repeat on the other leg. You can also return the grapefruit to the original side for each leg if you want to get crazy.
So, so jealous about the grapefruit. Here's a recipe: pour fresh squeezed juice over ice, add one ouunce vodka and mix! Ta da. :)
Love the stuffed-shirt pic and I can't wait to find out who wins those yummy nut butters. My fingers are crossed.
I love those bulgarian squats except I put my back foot on a swiss ball.
holy balls that is cold!! it is 9 degrees here today and i am chilled!
LOVE this post and playing with your food :) you have to be the most creative person when it comes to smoothie recipes and workouts. i love it! such key improv here. haha.. not a planter box. no way. i think i need to start using penny and randy as a dumbbell and a barbell ;)
i am somewhat sad this is the last post i have to read of yours. i guess i will go do some work now. i hope canada is treating you well and that you do not turn into a debcicle before making it back home.
LOVE YOU!!!!
Is that an Agave plant? I tore the hell outta myself falling on one while hiking in Sedona. They certainly are pretty though!
Envious of your grapefruit tree and your wonderfully, creative mind.
Love the stuffed tube top action there! LMAO!
I love your little cactus garden...sooo cute!
and the DOMS. I woulndt say I'm a fan but if it happens, it just means cool, I got a good workout in :)
Stay warm!
But most of all, thank you for the wonderful emails that past day. I cannot tell you how much they've meant to me and what a true friend you are, Deb. Thank you!
xoxo
First - I am soooo jealous of how warm it is where you are!
Second - I stared at your picture for about 5 minutes before I realized you'd put the grapefruit down your top. Even though you TOLD us. That's how tired I am these days...
Third - I adore grapefruit.
That is all:)
Oh... it is delightful up here isn't it. At least you are not stuck with it all winter long... its warmed up to a balmy minus 15! Makes the winter runs a challenge. Delurked for the contest and wanted to say I love your blog and you crack me up. I'm also a big anti-smoothie and you've inspired me to start making a few...
Where are in Canada are you?
You are hilarious! :) I love this workout idea!! I love grapefruits with a little sugah on top!! :)
LOVE the nutbutters Sweet HEAB picked out!! :) That lady has such good taste!!!!!
I was looking at the tube top before I read what you wrote, thinking, those are some weird looking boobs! So funny! I'm a new reader, and love your sense of humor...and your smoothies.
Hahahaha, I saw the stuffed top pic before I read "what to do with grapefruit" and almost peed my pants. And look at those guns! Deb, you're my hero.
Love the lunge workout! The strength training+cardio combo reminds me of Jillian Michaels dvds, because she makes me sweat/sore in the same manner.
Hello de-lurkers and newbies and old-faithfuls alike!
Allie- don't tempt me with the agave. Could make tequila too, don't forget!
Erika-please come and take them away.
Tracey- oooohhh your grapefruit routine sounds painful! I'm gonna try it!
GWM- Hee hee- that DOES sound good!
Janetha- dogs as weights- LOVE THAT!
TiredGirl- yes it's a humungoid agave! And it poked me once (not that I ran into IT, IT POKED ME) while doing my workout :-)
Averie, Charlotte, Katie and Beeks. What stuffed tube top!? My boobs just naturally look like huge grapefruits! ;-) heh heh
HOpe- can't say I blame you being anti-smoothie in these climes. You couldn't pay me enough money to have a smoothie in MINUS 22!!
I'm in Banff now but tomorrow we head to Kelowna! I do love this country! Where are you?
This is such a cute and creative way to work out - I love it!! By the way, are those your arms?! All that strength training (loving the word "strengthivascular" by the way) DOES do a body good! :)
Yes, pomegranates make great boobs, um, I mean workout props. :)
You crack me up Deb, and i love how you always make your workouts fun. So creative with your exercise and nut butters!!!!
Thanks so much for your kindness. You're an amazing friend, and I love ya so much.
Love the grapefruit workout idea. SO cute!! I used to hate grapefruit as a kid, but now I am loving them. I like them in smoothies.
It's definitely gorgeous up here but... every winter I wonder why oh why. I'm even further North - in Edmonton, AB. Hope you enjoyed Banff - there is a reason there are millions of tourists there every year and the drive to Kelowna through the Rockies is gorgeous. If you have a chance in the morning go to Wild Flour Bakery/cafe in Banff - it's fantastic! The mixed grains cereal with warm stewed fruit is perfect for a minus 22 morning!
Enjoy the rest of your trip!
I love the Grapefruit workout - too funny!
Agave and Grapefruit...oh the envy! We live in northern IL and have some amazing in-laws that brought me back an orange and lemon tree. Oh the excitement! :)
I bet my husband would eat grapefruit if I started stuffing, and who says the grapefruit diet doesn't work?? ...look how quickly our waists would shrink if our grapefruit chest grew overnight! :) hehehe!
Enjoy Canada...I hear it is gorgeous!
