In honor of the brilliant Janetha's Flashback Fridays, I wanted to share a story or two about some hikes that I've taken. Hopefully, they can help you think about preparedness while hiking. Don't worry, it's not a boring lecture about safety. For that you can visit this site. Seems I regularly fail at the #1 recommendation: Don't hike alone. Oops. At the end I threw in some random hiking photos, just for yuks.
As I set out on a hike today, an idea for a post hit me. The topic: how to bring what you need on a hike, but not what you do not. You follow? While not an expert in this field, I do have experiences with both sides of this coin.
On the one hand you want to bring enough of the basic necessities (food, water, first aid, ID, etc etc) to keep you comfortable and safe, plus spares for emergencies. But you do not want to bring items that you don't need, for example, your tiara or your bowling ball. I have brought neither of these on a hike, for those who are wondering. Plus, I loaned my tiara to Lara. :-)
What about your KEYS- house? Car? Both? There are arguments both for and against bringing keys, depending on a whole host of variables.
Argument FOR bringing your car keys:
You will need them if you actually want to drive home. Sounds simple, right? Years ago, we did a hike with a bunch of friends where we shuttled two cars. We parked one car in Lot 2, piled into the other car and drove to Lot 1. We hiked from lot 1 to lot 2 (hours and hours) only to discover that the keys to car 2 were in the car in lot 1. But we were standing in lot 2. Ugh. Stumbling upon a hippie encampment and hitching a ride back to lot 1, we had some fun memories of the day. But we were lucky. Shoulda brought the key.
Argument AGAINST bringing your keys:
I went hiking a couple of years ago on the same local trail I was hiking today. I felt so clever back on that day because I clipped my ENTIRE keychain to a little external hook on my fanny pack (OK Brits, I hear you giggling). I mean, why else would someone make a bag with an external hook if it's not meant to be used! When I returned, my car key was gone. Shouldn'ta brought the key.
But it's a big rectangular silver "keyless" key, so it should be easy to find if I just retrace my steps, right?
Wrong.
I retraced every.single.step and no key was found. But I did see about 64 million rocks that were impersonating my key. So every 2 seconds I'd stop and shriek "Oh LOOK!! THERE it is!!" Have a look at this shifty bunch of impostors that I picked up today:
I got to my picnic spot & ate my lunch. Mmmm a PB&J on lavash:
By the way my mouth isn't enormous. What looks like a HUGE bite on the right is actually two bites taken side-by-side, honest!
Then on my way back down the mountain, I spotted THIS lying in the middle of the trail:

Hmmm, boy that looks familiar! Where have I seen THAT before??
Cue cell phone flashback:
GAHHH! The cover to my cell phone has been breaking apart piece by piece for a month. I guess it came off completely as I put my cell phone back in my Bum Bag (OK Brits, is that better?). So while I did not lose my car key today, I nearly lost my cell phone cover.
What is the moral of the story? That you can be as prepared as you think humanly possible, and then sh*t happens anyway. The end. Don't say I didn't warn you. Have a nice day.
A few random photos:

Why do hikers feel compelled to stack rocks upon one another? Just curious. Anyone know?
Jan & his wife, Jane are good friends and major hiking/mountain biking buddies & we heart their kids Nick & Lara (yep, another Lara!)
Jan, Deb, Derek. Triple trouble.
Q: Do you like to hike? Any good stories hiking tales? Do you stick rather large children on the rafters?
By the way, Lara just posted a guest post that I wrote for her about the accolades of STRENGTH TRAINING! If you are interested, why don't you go and have a peek. She has an awesome blog as you all know. And while you're there, tell her I want my tiara back.

BEAUTIFUL sights!
If I had rafters, I would also stick children on them.
I do not hike nearly enough! Those pics are inspiring. Except for the climbing gear (kidding), I can attest that ziplining gear also makes one's butt look bigger than necessary.
I either bring TOO MUCH food on hiking/outings (20 minute walk along the river) or occasionally NOT ENOUGH (theme parks). Do I really need 3000 calories of trail mix for a stroll?
Aaack about the keys. Maybe get one of those climbing hooks and hook 'em on your tiara?
Ahhh! If I lived somewhere that I could hike, I'm pretty sure I would quit my job (and be homeless) so that I could do it every freaking day. It looks amazing, as the closest thing we have around here in the summer is a really big double hill at the local high school. Not nearly as exciting.
Beautiful pics. If you want to adopt me and move me out there, I would be cool with that. I will even let you stick me up on rafters.
I love hiking! I haven't had a key-related issue whilst hiking, however, while tubing a river I have. Pro- need keys to return home. Con- Water is not nice to electronic eyes. Eeek!
I miss hiking a lot right now, we got 12 inches of snow last night which is awful for hikes. However, I'm looking into snowshoeing :-) Check it out at: http://www.redfeather.com/content.asp?id=548
You kill me... snicker...as for hiking? love love love it... really love to geocache on hikes or trips in general.. it's like a treasure hunt for adults... as for kids and rafters .. uhhhh... no
Gorgeous pics! And yes, if I had rafters, my kids would be up there probably using it as a balance beam.
I've never been on a hike because I live in Pittsburgh. I don't even know if there is somewhere to hike here? But your pics are gorgeous.
You'll have to let me know when you're down there again since my mom lives not too far away.
A thousand years ago I took a hike up the mountain south of the tram to a waterfall. Could never find it again but I'm sure it's on some map.
The key and non-keys made me LOL!
All my true Flashback pics are on FILM as in 4x6 snapshots and so i am always sooo impressed that you can just pull out a stash like this.
the pic by this:"Totally off topic, but this is what happens when Nick (and sister Lara) misbehave while we are babysitting."
I need to hang out on the rafters with them!
Hiking. Love it. Love all your shots. Gorgeous!!!!
If I could handle the weather (cold) in Napa or Marin county, I'd live there and hike a mountain all the time!
I always stack rocks together when on hikes. I say *always* like it's a common thing. I have probably hiked 5 times in my 24 years. The first time was voluntary, the following 4 were not.
Elizabeth- thanks for sharing the great story about the rafting incident. And what timing for the snoeshoeing link!- I will be snowshoeing for the first time EVER next week! So excited- thanks for the link! I'll check it out!
Graze- Ahh, so now I know a real-live rock-stacker!! :-) Thanks for de-lurking and welcome to you!
Love to hike but haven't had a chance to do any with the weight loss. Spent too much time running!
Your pics make me jealous!
Deb,
Love to hike, and I love that photo of Derek kissing the top of your head.
That picture of your key with the rocks made me laugh - they do all look alike. I'm bad about hiking alone. Everyone gets onto me for that but it's just b/c I don't have any hiking buds nearby...at least ones that can go hiking at 10 AM on a weekday morning. I usually just take the pups - they keep me safe. :)
The area Deb refers to is in the Lake District http://tinyurl.com/yh9jbjm
We were hiking one of the Langdale Pikes.
Check these links and you'll understand why I was crapping myself, particularly the second image of Pavey Ark.
We were about half way up when it started drizzling, making a pretty slippery surface.

Okay, first that cellphone lineup made me laugh out loud. Thank god I'm alone in my office :P
My mom is a hardcore hiker and used to drag me everywhere when I was a kid. I hated it!! But it's something I'd love to start doing again now that I'm in better shape. Plus, there's nothing better than hiking a long and hard trail, only to get to your beautiful destination :)
Off to read your guest post!
Looks like you had a great hike! Glad you found your cell phone case & your key!!
I love your pictures! A challenging hike is my favorite form of exercise. But, unfortunately, since the toddler has been born, I haven't been on many hikes... I really need to change that!
Your first pic of that rainbow is GORGEOUS!! Looks like something off a poster.
I love Flashback Friday posts - it's always so much fun seeing everyone's past adventures, family pics, etc.
I've hiked/backpacked in Mammoth, CA (beautiful) and Chris & I went in Hawaii, which was spectacular what with the waterfalls, cliffs, lush greenery, etc. A friend told me of a good place around here to go hiking so I'm hoping to get up there soon!
Great post Deb!!
Oooh I love this post! The parents have defintely dragged me hiking one too many times as a kid, but now I enjoy it and actually ask them to take my hiking. *Yeah,a little intimidated to go on my own*
As for your lavash- total food blog material, I'm in love with it.
And the rock stacks? I'm pretty sure those are to mark the trail.. but I could be making that up. That's just what I've been told before.
The unphotoshopped photo is beautiful! Were you hiking from the Palm Springs Tramway?
Steph- not from the tramway- but you can SEE the tramway (If you were Steve Austen, the Six Million Dollar Man).
Beeks- rock stacks- this was at the "top" of one mountain. If you missed the trail, you'd be reading Braille. I'm thinking: rock art, meeting point, boredom, channeling Indian spirits? who knows. It's a very spiritual canyon apparently. When I "borrowed" those rocks for the photo shoot, I was really nervous until I "gave them back' to the mountain! :-) I was driving really carefully and slowly! hee hee.
hahahahahah you might be the funniest person i know! the rock impostors had tears in my eyes, not even joking. and that sucks about the cars/keys thing. i have done something similar when floating a river. doh! i loveee hiking, it is one thing utah is known/best for! we should hike together some day :) love you! off to read 4 more of your posts :D
Now I try to get my kids to go hiking with me. Enjoyed the pics.
Hiking guy- thanks! I think kids need to be started really early for them to actually enjoy it (despite the whining!) :-) Thanks for reading@!
