New recipe: Carob Chickpea 'Butter'

Hey SGET readers! Unlike yesterday's rather deep Flashback Friday, today's post is nice and light. Thank you to for all of your very sweet comments - they (and you) make a huge difference in my life! I am grateful to each and every one of you...commenters and lurkers alike :-)

Those of you know already know me know that I love me some good nut butters as evidenced in some earlier posts! I especially love to make my own whenever possible.
I felt like straying from my Saturday/Sunday Smoothie format as it's getting chilly nowadays...well, that and I haven't created any new smoothies this week :o) But I did create a bizarre new food product...well, it's new for me!

Warning people... this is random and weird, but I like it!

I bought some dried chickpeas from a Persian market (I have no idea how they dry/dehydrate them.) They are sold in bulk, so I can't even show you a package. They are roughly normal size, perhaps a bit smaller than the type you buy in a can. They are crunchy, but not hard like a Corn Nut. You can pop them into your mouth and eat them as a snack like nuts. However, they are not oily like nuts. In fact they are quite dry to just chomp on. After eating a few, you feel like you need a milk or water chaser. (Bourbon would work too, I suppose, if you felt so inclined.)

So you KNOW that I had to stick some in the Vitamix and see what would happen. I ended up with a powder a la PB2, only with some tiny granular chunks (I probably could have run it longer to get it to be a finer powder).

Here I have basically 'Chickpea PB2'. So what do I do?

L to R: Dehydrated chickpeas...Chickpea powder...Roasted Carob Powder...Carob Chickpea 'butter' (the finished product)

Rehydrate with a little water, add stevia and my latest obsession: Roasted Carob Powder.

Carob Chickpea 'Butter'

You can see it went deep, dark brown and was so thick and creamy. I ended up dipping strawberries into it and It.Was.Amazing!!!!

So there you have it- weird, random, yummy.

Q: Any weird random yummy recipes to share?

You beat me to the chickpea butter! I was mulling over posting about my chickpea pumpkin dessert hummus! Alas, it is not perfected yet...

I am loving the Smoothie Girl Recipes! (previous post deleted for too many pre-coffee typographical errors!)

Weird. Random. Yummy. 3 words I love to hear in the kitchen.

We use the same roasted carob powder, and I bet your new "Butter" would taste amazing with a squirt of The Dark Side PB syrup...mine has yet to arrive. ;)

I can't get dried chickpeas in Belgium... Do you think I could make this with regular canned chickpeas - kind of like hummus but with the carob instead of tahini?

Deb (Smoothie Girl Eats Too) said...

Vicki- Do you have middle-eastern shops there at all? If not, you certainly could try with canned chickpeas- it would be just like hummus with a sweetener and carob or cocoa. I was myself wondering if I could dehydrate chickpeas (or any bean) in a dehydrator or low oven??? One day I'll try it- they are yummy just as snacks as I said. Good luck!

Allie- hahaha- finally I beat YOU to something- usually it's the other way around and you beat me by a DAY!!!! :-D

Ooo I am so not suprised Deb! You are a whiz in the kitchen. :) I have yet to dabble in the dessert hummus's, and I feel this falls under that category. I need to get on IT.

They sell dried chickpeas at the Bulk Barn! I've had them before too. I of course just thought of munching on them or re-hydrating them. I love how your mind automatically goes to carob-buttery goodness ;)

I saw apple hummus at the grocery store the other day, but my giant tub of Sabra that won't go away made me decide against it. Soon!

Oh, and that screaming pic of you is hilarious :P

Oh holy hell...if this stuff is anything like the pecan butter or the maple butter you sent to me...literally - I am having to swallow because I'm salivating so much. YUUMMMM!!!

In reference to your newer post about blogger - I think this is one of the reasons why I switched to Wordpress! I got sick of dealing with errors and other things. Although I rarely ever blog anymore anyway so I'm not sure why it would matter. Of course I switch to WordPress and THEN discover from Lara that I should use LiveWriter. :)

What a load of babble THAT was...

Wow! I have been following your blog for a while, but I just had to comment on this post. This looks as delicious as it does weird, but not too far out in left field, as I've definitely had black bean and chickpea brownies which were nothing short of awwwwwesome!
This is a wonderful blog:)

Wow- cool response to such an odd recipe! Thanks, commenters and welcome new readers! I love feedback and tips :-)

okay, the chickpeas in the bulk bin in my neck of the woods are the not the same as your soft yet still crunchy chickpeas. The bulk bin ones are like little garbanzo pebbles. I have to track down a persian market.

I put dry-roasted chickpeas into my smoothies =) Carob + soymilk (unsweetened) + stevia, chickpeas, and ice. The chickpeas provide the smoothie with a thick consistency. Love them!

Anon- OOOhh! That's so cool- I'll try that! If I can reduce my reliance on the gums, that would be so awesome! If you happen to read this comment, can you let me know how much you add for one smoothie? Thanks!

Hi, I started with 1/2 cup, but I add a little more now =)

Enjoy!!
