(Note to edit: I scheduled this to be posted at 3am on 10/3/09 but apparently Blogger just felt like posting it on 10/2/09...ornery little Blogger!)
The way I see it, there are three styles of smoothie drinkers:
The Traditionalist:
You say:
· I want my milk or juice and fruit. Don’t mess with simplicity.
· If I’m feeling really frisky I may allow some peanut butter.
· Sometimes I might put a tablespoon of yogurt in there and perhaps some protein powder, but THAT’S it!
The Experimentalist:
You say:
· Hmm, a veggie snuck into my shake - I can live with that.
· You want to doll it up with a little oatgurt or kefir? Well why the heck not?
· An herb here, an extract there – sure- life’s too short.
· There’s more nut butters to try than just PB, ya know!
The FrankenSmoothie Lover:
You say:
· I LOVE Hungry-Girl- I make all of her recipes!
· Torani Syrups, Splenda, Sugar-free/fat-free pudding Jello powder, Crystal Light=the 4 food groups…YESSss!
The Balls-to-the-Wall Risk-Taker:
You say:
· Eye of Newt and frog’s legs? Bring it on!
· Dinner in a blender? It’s so practical!
· I can drink a smoothie of any color. I’m not intimidated by vomit - green.
Think about what sort of Smoothitarian you are. I will admit to you that I am somewhere between The Experimentalist and a FrankenSmoothietista. I keep the calories roughly at 300 cals, and try to make sure there's protein, fat and complex carbs in the mix.
You might want to refer back to the Smoothie 101a post for more information.
The Elvis Pelvis:
- Water, Ice, Xanthan & Guar Gums, Stevia (these go into every.single.shake.I.make)
- Frozen Banana (half to one whole)
- Almond Extract
- T. Peanut butter
- Scoop Protein Powder
- 2-3 T. Oats, plus few more for sprinkling on top
Smoothie Girl's Sweet Potato Pie:
- Water, ice, XG, GG, Stevia
- walnut extract, Maple extract (or Mapeline) (or the real deal maple syrup!)
- Cooked, cubed, FROZEN sweet potato (half of a medium)
- Scoop protein powder
- Cinnamon (if you have a V-mix use a HUNK of real Cinnamon bark- TRUST ME!!!!)
- 1/2 oz Pecans to mix in at the very end so that it's chunky-licious (reserve a bit for garnish...must look pretty!)
The 'Peace in the Middle East' Smoothie: aka 'drink your Halva'
- 2 T. Tahini (yes, tahini, and I froze it the night before in a cup)
- 1/2 small container (~3 oz ) Greek yogurt (didn't freeze this, but couldda)
- T. Powdered Egg white
- Vanilla & Maple extracts
- Stevia
- Pistactios- reserve some for garnish, and the rest PUT IN AT THE VERY END so as to keep a lot of gorgeous pistacio chunkage.
OK so I NEVER in a zillion years would have thought of making a smoothie with TAHINI, but HEAB was on a tahini kick this week and suggested that I come up with a tahini smoothie. I'm not one to shy away from a friendly challenge, so I put on my thinking cap. Turns out I was heading to my local Persian market to buy roasted hazelnuts (aka little balls of crack) and I got inspired by the Halva sold there.
So I followed suit and took these YUMMY Licorice Pastels that my Dad loves from Cost Plus World Market:

SENSATIONAL smoothie concoctions!
Thanks for the recipes and the tutorial Deb! One thing I have determined I cannot tweak on if I want the consistency or flavor of the smoothie I read about, is smoothies. I almost never add water or ice so it's interesting that you do. And XG and GG, I still cant seem to get the ratios perfect (there is sometimes a funky texture) and the stevia if not careful can ruin the whole thing and make it taste like a pot 'o nutrasweet. So I am really impressed with your creations. The Elvis Pelvis would be my 1st pick. I want smoothies to taste like decadent milkshake varieties and that one probably does. Can't wait for future recipe editions like this! And water...how much, like 4oz? Ice cubes, like 6? There is such a fine line where water can just water everything down. And XG and GG, 1/2 tsp each? Happy Sat. friend. Your nut buttahs rock too :)
I think I have yet to see some of your smoothie concoctions- and Miss Deb- way to make a first impression!
They look delish.
I've decided I'm probably the experimentalist, that always eats her smoothie in a bowl. No other way.
VitaPorn? I snarfed yerba mate up my nose!
I am sooooo totally making the peace in the middle east and sweet potato pie. It's tahini week at my house!
(you must try EatingWell's honey tahini dressing on roasted veggies)
I ate my falafel balls last night for dinner, and they were super yellow from all the curry. That was in honor of your Dad. :)
All the smoothies sounds amazing, and I love how you incorporate nuts or oats into the end for a little/chew crunch. I think that is what prevents me from doing smoothies sometimes is b/c I just don't want to "drink" my breakfast.
Mmm, tahini. Linking to this in post today. Looked/sounded amazing. Think I could replicate it with coconut milk kefir and some chia seeds?
I love love love your tips on smoothies. Yesterday I ran around searching for guar gum (found it!) and for the first time in like forever was full from a smoothie. I'm fiddling with getting the frankenfoods out of mine (wrote a post about it last night that I have to proofread), but you've given me tons of ideas to play with in the meantime. Do you ever go to Surfa's? It's my must-go-to place when I visit my brother in LA--my pulse rate doubles when I walk through the doors. I'd imagine you could find lots there, including sprinkles, to juice up the smoothies even more. TDH
This blog is great! i love it and am having fun reading and getting great recipes and ideas!!
so fun!

Well, Deb, I am not much of a smoothie maker--too lazy! But those look mighty good. You are quite the experimentarian yourself! I am so proud :)
Oooh what a fun post!! I haven't had a smoothie in a long time - I prefer eating my calories as opposed to drinking them and the only "meal" I have to drink is a juice...at least right now! That doesn't mean I won't be smoothie-ing in the future. I definitely think you're more than an experimentarian! You concoct very creative concoctions (that was a bit redundant wasn't it?) I am cracking up over your vita-porn and the "bowm chicka bowm bowm"!!!
VG- thanks- let me know if you have any rockin' ideas.
Averie- I add ice (a good 6+ cubes) and water (8-12 oz) for volume. it's my M.O. with smoothies- The XG and GG is trial and error- I usually use 1/2 tsp GG and 1/4 tsp XG (I might go back and change it in the recipe).
Bekah- I posted my PB&J recipe on the Smoothie 101 post. It's yummy!
Allie: Snarf- LOVE that word snarf!! Hmm don't know honey tahini dressing?!
HEABS- you betcha on the chia and coconut kefir!
TDH- OMG love Serfas! Yes, was thinking about sprinkles there. Must go there soon. A bit dangerous on the wallet though! :-)
Natalie-WELCOME and thanks for the nice comment!
Emily- ahh- smoothies are so easy it's a crime. Especially if you have a magic bullet or the like- no washup- love it!
Hayley: You said: "I prefer eating my calories as opposed to drinking them". True story- I had a girlfriend who said those exact words to me...when I brought her over to the dark side, she became a smoothie-holic and now is enrolled in a 12-step for it. Bit of an exaggeration, but truly, she's a HUUUUUGGGGGGEEEEEEE fan now. Just sayin'
Love the categories ;) I think I am an Experimentalist, but color doesn't bother me. I can do veggies but haven't gone as far as the gums yet.
Alright, now you need to write the Diet (or Shake) Horoscope! I would, but frankly I'm too lazy and temperamental.
