First of all, the word “destroy” might be a bit dramatic. But a vacation/cruise can definitely “pummel” or even “beat the living crap” out of your diet, even if it doesn’t outright “destroy” it. Lot of “quotes” eh? But wait, there’s more!
I say “Diet” in quotation marks because we are not on restrictive“diets” anymore, right? We are “making healthy-living choices”. I try to eat healthy most of the time, but vacations are meant to be enjoyed (as are Tuesdays). And food is part of the equation.
As I just returned from a cruise, the subject is fresh in my mind, so here is the topic of the day: Surviving (while enjoying) a vacation/cruise.
First of all, it’s important to remember that a cruise can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many people. In this regard, I feel that it’s important to enjoy the food on offer, but not to approach it with the “last supper” mentality. If you do that, you will return home with extra L-Bs and perhaps a hefty dose of regret. Here are some ways that I have found to be useful when surrounded by amazing food 24/7…
1. Approach buffets carefully. The fewer choices you have, the less you will eat. Studies have confirmed this. The problem with buffets is that you have literally hundreds of choices. My advice: cruise (ack!) the buffet before you get your tray- see what’s on offer and then go in for the kill. Get what you really truly want, but only get about 4 or 5 items (trust me- it's way harder than you might imagine).
I know it seems sacrilegious to set a limit with all that bounty, but the buffet will still be there the next day. Be sure to include a good deal of healthy veggies and a dose of healthy fat as well as a bit of protein and carbs (complex if you have the choice). Having said that, you can survive with some nutrition-devoid white carbs for a few days. Your quinoa at home will forgive you.
2. Go to a restaurant instead of a buffet. If you do have the choice to have a sit-down, fixed meal, that is the better choice. But beware the kind waitress- she will bring you roll after roll and offer you extras to make you happy, so realize that it isn’t fail-proof. We accidentally stumbled upon a good strategy this trip: Order a boat-load (eek) of steamed veggies on the side. We got this every night. Sure, we ate other less-than-healthy foods (hello Beef Wellington), but the veggies helped to get in some vitamins and fiber to fill us up.
3. Don’t stuff yourself silly. I know that it sounds obvious to many of you, but when I was 90 pounds heavier than today, I thought that the “normal” way to walk away from a meal was Thanksgiving-Day-lay-down-on-the-couch-and-unbutton-pants-stuffed. This was simply unhealthy. The Japanese have a word (Hara Hachi Bu, FYI) for feeling 80% full- and for the Japanese, it's a goal for which to strive. Personally, some days I might be satisfied with less, some days more. You know when you pass that point of hunger satiation. Don't pass it too far. We all do this from time to time: let out a huge sigh after we've just finished a meal. Chances are that we ate too much. Once in a while, that's fine. Not daily.
4. Stay hydrated. Really, you do not need to chug your weight in water, but it’s nice that they do have water and iced tea dispensers in the buffet areas.
5. Move as much as your body will let you. Sometimes you need a day off. Or two or five. I have always found it incredibly helpful to move my arse most days of a cruise. Whether it’s walking around the 'promenade' deck (a deck that encourages walking round and round) or an all-out gym-sweat-fest, I recommend that you do something. I often have to force myself to get to the gym (especially if I’m jet-lagged like this last vacay) , but I feel 100% better once I’m done.
Twice I did my go-to lazy-girls' workout...it's the In-Room No-weight L&S (Lunge n Squat) routine. This is a handy workout if you don't feel like being in public or even putting on decent workout clothes (or any at all for that matter). You will have a drip-fest and very sore glutes & quads the next day. All you need is about 20-45 minutes and about 5 feet of clear space in front of you.
New ships have full service gyms- this one had all major cardio and strength equiptment (except the revolving staircase) as well as Swiss Balls, a Bosu, stretch bands, 6-pound medicine balls and free weights. Keep in mind that a workout does not provide carte blanche to have an eating free-for-all, but it keeps you in the healthy mind-set and it’s good for your ticker and muscles.
6. Take the stairs. (assuming you have no medical issues with this). Some of these new ships have more than a dozen floors! That’s a workout in itself! I have a Stairs-Only rule on ships: I limit my use of elevators...even when playing "Dress-up".
Once on vacay with a girlfriend who knew about my Stairs-Only rule, I hopped into an elevator to go down to the bottom floor. She looked astounded and exclaimed “WHAT ABOUT YOUR 'STAIRS-ONLY' RULE!?!” I replied **“I make exceptions for going down”. You can imagine that comment became the TWSS comment of the trip. ;-)
PS. I burned about 25 cals for each trip from the public rooms to our room (yes, I wore my heart rate monitor one day just to learn that fact). We are constantly "running up to the room" in between meals and activities. Tell me that doesn't add up over the course of a day!
7. Don’t “save” your calories for later. This strategy can backfire big-time. Just eat your normal brekkie , don't skip meals or snacks. Don’t go starved to any meal or you’ll find yourself face-planted in the bread basket. If you’re at the buffet you’ll take waaayyyyy more food than you really want or need. How to avoid pre-meal starvation? See #8…
{SORRY SGET readers to leave you hanging, but obviously I've got way too much to say about this topic for one measly post. Therefore I decided to break it down into two segments. Now go tackle the rest of your GoogleReader and I'll see you tomorrow for part II, and have a great day!!}

I always thought Hara Hachi Bu was Okinawan for "Clean Your Plate!" No?
These are awesome tips! :)
Great tips! And I love that you didn't let your commitment to exercise & healthy eating get in the way of enjoying yourself!
Great post Deb. I used to be so bad about saving my calories, and then I'd totally pig out later in the day. Much happier with a filling breakfast!
Oh, and buffets - avoid them like the plague. So enjoy a good sit-down restaurant instead. Do not like that I ate too much feeling which is how I often feel after a buffet. I just want to eat everything. The idea that it will still be there tomorrow never enters my mind.
Loved your workout note. :)
Since moving to Miami we have been talking a lot about hoping on a cheap cruise, so these are some great tips. I'm always active, but truly the buffet scares me!!
Love your tips Deb!
Vacations are a time I know this will shock you...I under eat. As a high raw all vegan girl, the food choices once I leave my humble abode and especially the USA start shrinking. I am ok w/ cooked food but I have to avoid my allergens (dairy, soy, wheat) so I plan ahead. In my past life b4 I realized how allergic I was to those foods, I would eat them buffet style and feel hoooorrrible. Great tips for the 4-5 things only & dont save cals for later in day.
Oh your ? to me about my B blender. Dont like it AT ALL. In my banana bread post
http://www.loveveggiesandyoga.com/2009/10/vegan-peanut-butter-banana-bread.html
I kinda touched on it...but email me privately if you want more info :)
I'm a newbie here but think your tips are great. In my opinion, buffets may have lots of choices, but most of the time they don't even taste good because they're cooked ahead of time and warmed for later. I agree with the restaurant suggestion. At least you're getting better quality--and then maybe you'll be satisfied earlier and eat less!
I really like #1! My biggest problem with buffets used to be I'd walk up, empty plate in hand, completely clueless as to what food I was going to come across. By the time I'd get to the end of the line, I'd have a mountain of food because I kept finding dishes I liked more than the last. Now, before I even pick up the plate, I walk around and scope out what's being offered and decide what dishes are worth it, and what are better passed on.
I read once the average person gains 7 lbs on a 7 day cruise. Probably a total lie, but not unbelievable either!!
Ohhh, I think your puns just made my day.
Great tips too D!
:)
wow great post! loved it! okay, maybe the puns were the highlight.. because your sense of humor is so like mine.. but you also have some really great tips in here! all of them actually. that is awesome that you figured out you burned 25 cals with each trip. clever girl. and the TWSS had me cracking up. loved the info about limiting your choices at the buffet. how often have i been in vegas and got "just a bite" of EVERYTHING.. yeah it turns into 5 plates! better to eat just a few faves.. for sure. anyway i look forward to the next part! xoxo
p.s. i have not read your guest post yet, i got it on my phone email but i haven't had a chance to sit down at a computer and read it~which is what i prefer~but i will be checking the gmail account later today! stoked!
I hope I can follow your rules with a buffet. They're great. But I'm weak, weak, weak.
I only eat a few items and they're healthy.
But when you eat your weight in those items, the lbs. do pile on, plus, you don't feel so very well.
I'm getting a little better.
The solution would be to avoid buffets, but we go less than we used to. That's a little progress.
I loved your advice. I'll keep trying. Otherwise, I'll have to treat a paramedic to come with.
Great puns . . .a sign of a very high IQ.
Excellent advice!! I used to be very bad saving my calories and you're right - it backfires!! Finally discovering that was such an epiphany!! Thanks for sharing these great tips!! :)
This is my first visit to your blog I connected through another blog. You have given some great tips in this entry. I agree with all of your points.
"Approach buffets carefully" - for some reason that line cracked me up though....
I like your blog.
Allie- not according to my extremely high tech method of typing in "80% full Japan" into google and clicking on the first link.
Diana- welcome (1st timer?) and thanks.
Charlotte- thanks! Yeah, it's not worth being thin or fit if you are miserable!
Heabs- yeah, the note I was pretty pleased with myself on that one! And the reminder that the buffet will still be there seems to help.
Run to the Finish- welcome! And welcome to my 2nd ever male commenter- at least there's a photo of a male on your tile ;-) And DO IT- book that cruise! I love cruises- I tell people "don't knock it til you try it". So much to offer so many types of people.
Averie- you poor thing with travel. Not fun. Must say though that they have a HUGE array of raw fruits and veggies..HUGE HUGE HUGE! You'd have trouble with the protein part.
Tracey- welcome! And you are very right- the buffet food is cooked way in advance. Not as nice as fresh-cooked.
Susan- Yes, that empty plate gets super filled by the time you've had one spoonful of 73 items. And I believe it about 7 pounds. Hubs gained 7 pounds in 12 days! Oops I "outed" him to the blogosphere! :-)
Bekah, Janetha and Rhoda- thanks about the puns- a blessing and a curse to be sure. Sometimes I don't even see that I did it until I'm PROOFING the darn thing! Doh!
Homecookedem- welcome and glad to hear you found problem with saving cals before it was too late!
Tom! You're a man! I mean, you know this, but you are my third male reader! (familia doesn't count!) Thanks for reading and commenting!
Great tips chica! Fortunately, my dh sympathizes with the amount of time I will be spending w/ my MIL so I will be able to get out for a daily hour of sanity time = run/walk :-) Hope that keeps things a bit in check. I've got fish and chips & sticky toffee pudding w/ cream to deal with!
michelle- that hour will be the very sweetest treat! :-) Yorkshire pudding is a bit tough to resist too! :-) Can't wait to hear about it!
great post! looking forward to part two. will you have a similar post towards the holidays? I'm soooo afraid of holiday food... I'm just too lucky we don't celebrate halloween nor thanksgiving. Only christmas challenges me!!!
Jessy-welcome to you and yes I can definitely do a post about the hols. Thanks for suggesting it!
My hubby makes yorkshire puddings w/ sunday dinners - love them! Although they probably use fat to grease the tins in UK, not olive oil like we do here.
I LOVE the prawn sandwiches and prawn cocktail jacket potatoes too! Can't wait!
PS - am going to NYC for a few days this weekend and have a laundry list of restaurants to hit up while there. Dear Lord, my waistline neeeeeds to survive these upcoming trips! LOL
