Why I'm happy that hubby fell ill on April 29, 2005

You must be thinking that I'm a callous and unsympathetic wife. Perhaps you are right, but let me tell you why I would say such a thing....If the hubs wasn't sick that day, I would probably not be blogging.

You see, when I returned from the gym that day in 2005, I came home to find the hubby sick in bed. We were scheduled to attend a winery tour and tasting at a vineyard nearby. When I realized that he wasn't well, I exclaimed, "Oh you POOR, POOR SWEET BABY!! I'm SOOOooooo sorry that you are feeling so awful!! Oops, look at the time! I'm off to a wine-tasting...BYE!"

Guess you were right about me being callous and unsympathetic- see how well you know me?

Rosenthal Winery and Vineyards

It was a tour/nibble/taste/mingle affair and I was a tad nervous going by myself (serves me right, of course) but I ended up standing next to a girl I will call Jill (actually, that is her name...that's why I will call her Jill). We began chatting and she introduced me to her friends. Long story short, we've all been friends ever since.

Who knew I'd meet such good friends so unexpectedly?

Every so often, Jill would forward me an e-newsletter if she thinks it would interest me. One day she passed along a Vital Juice Daily or a Daily Candy or one of those "Daily" newsletters. Anyway, something interesting caught my eye: there was a blurb about a girl who (get this!) photographed EVERY MORSEL OF FOOD SHE ATE EVERY DAY and then she (wait, wait! it gets better!) POSTED IT ONTO A WEBSITE FOR THE WHOLE UNIVERSE TO SEE!!

What?!! This doesn't shock you? I bet if you think back to when you first started reading food blogs, you'll realize that even just for a moment you thought this a bit odd.

I found myself glued to KathEatsRealFood for the better part of the afternoon. 'Wow, do you see all the things she does with OATMEAL!?!'... 'How cool, she leaves the peanut butter ON THE SPOON as she eats her oatmeal, thus rendering EVERY bite full of peanutbutterliciousness!'

OK, this was cool- I could get into this!

'Hmm what's a "Blog Roll"? Click, click click. Oh my word, there are more of these sites... and more still!! Well, one of those clicks lead me to Heather Eats Almond Butter where I lurked. After a few months, I found myself exchanging emails with Heather on a regular basis. As some of you know, she encouraged me and supported me (still does!) to blog- for which I remain very grateful. I never would have even known what a food blog was until recently when I saw Julie and Julia. You can look back to see the post I wrote about my take on movie and how it handled the topic of food blogging.

So there you have it: why I'm happy that hubby fell ill on April 29, 2005.

The cool thing about this little story is that we all have one- hundreds of them actually: think about it...how you met your partner, how you chose your career, where you live. Do you ever think about how one little thing can have a huge effect on the way life turns out? If your mom didn't wear that mini-skirt with the go-go boots that day, your Dad might not have asked her out (her kindness and wit not withstanding). Then you might not even be....YOU! You'd be someone else, or perhaps you wouldn't even exist (rendering it impossible to read this post).

On that note, I need to go make the hubs his dinner. He wants a quesadilla and there's some very old cheese in the fridge that needs using up.

Bon Appettite!

That's a great post, Deb!!!!! The what if's of if this happened or if this didn't...gosh, I think about things like that all the time. Mentally pontificating and projecting what may or may not have ensued given x,y,z set of variables. For instance, I met my husband b/c a co-worker of mine was talking to this guy (my now husband) and I had to interrupt her to ask her a question. When apparently I caught the eye of my husband. And we began chatting. And the rest is history. But if I hadn't had a question for her at that very moment, I'd have never met him that day and probably wouldn't be married to him. Stuff like that fascinates me and I LOVE your story.

Also, thank you deeply for the great advice on my anon comment issue you gave me. I don't know why I didnt come to that conclusion on my own, I guess I'm sleep-deprived or wanting to somehow give strangers the benefit of the doubt on MY blog. Duh...what was I thinking? Thank you for helping :)

xoxo

So funny Deb - I thought the exact SAME thing when I discovered food blogs, KERF being my first. I remember saying to CD, "Look at this blog. This girl takes pictures of everything she eats. That is so bizarre!" But then, I found myself wanting to read it everyday, and then I soon discovered other food blogs, and the rest is history. Maybe I was meant to blog to meet you. If so, it's been totally worth it...and I'm not just saying that because you send me the most amazing chunky nut butters. ;)

Deb what a totally cool post!! I think about that stuff alllll the time. Sometimes it's wondering "what if" as in, "What if I'd gone to college in CA like I'd planned instead of staying in TX when my soon-to-be husband moved there?" or the fact that because my family and Chris' friends all requested a table change the first night on the cruise ship we never would've met.

That is truly an awesome story you have - it's the little moments, right? :)

That IS a cool story! Very serendipitous. I think the thing that stood out to me the most was how willing and open you were to opportunities and suggestions that came your way. I think everyone has these in their lives but not everyone sees them for the gifts they are. WTG!

hahaha.. "a girl I will call Jill (actually, that is her name...that's why I will call her Jill" you are too funny. this was really cool to read how you got into blogging. i have a weird story myself, i was looking for the image of an omelet pan to show my mom and google images brought it up and it was hosted on a blog.. with a blog roll of a ton of food blogs.. i was like WHAT THE CRAP IS ALL THIS?! and that was just in march of this year, mind you, i am way behind the times. it is really cool to think about the single events in like that changed the whole world.. well maybe not THE whole world. but the whole world for one person. really cool post deb! i can always count on you for some intellectual thoughts and mind stimulation.. which was much needed on this dragging monday :) hugs to you!

I think about my venture to TX for my internship this past summer.. and (even though the restaurant I'm working for has been closed for the past month, and all I've been doing is sitting in my room reading blogs and doing yoga..) I would never have found all these blogs in the first place.

:)

It has literally given me something to do each day.
Love this post!

I am happy your hubby fell ill too, because I love reading your blog! My hub and I knew each other for awhile but never had a connection. Then on the day of my grandfather's funeral, my friend convinced me to go to a Thanksgiving party with him and I ran into my now hub and he made me laugh on a day that was so sad. I like to think my grandfather got us together!

I love this post! Great fun story, and a good point about how small things can make a big impact! I have often thought that about my parents, it's a wonder they ever ended up together!

I also thought food blogging was odd at first, but I was so intrigued I was hooked from the very first time I read Oh She Glows, then I obsessively read every day until finally I caved and started my own!

I'm still catching up with old posts!
This is SO sweet. I think about that stuff all the time. Have you seen the movie "Sliding Doors"? One of my favorites. All about how missing one door on a train can change your life. I love it. Cute story. I guess I'M glad your hubs fell ill that day, too ;)
