My Kitchen, My Gym

After: Demolition complete

Before: Kitchen intact

Our kitchen is lovely. It’s white with little blue tiles and painted flowers that match darling ceramics I bought in Portugal years ago. It has served us well for 14 years, but we both agreed that it was time for something a bit more contemporary.

Those of you who have been reading since I started this blogette know that I love to get a workout in everyday activities. For example, I posted “My garden, my gym” about a month ago. Today my kitchen was my gym- and then some.

I don’t call “demolishing a kitchen” an everyday activity, but it was to be the activity du jour. Truth be known, it ate me up and spat me out (sorry, couldn’t resist).

I told my hubby that I wanted to be the first one to take a sledgehammer to the kitchen when we remodeled. So when I was summoned to do the ceremonious First Whack, I dutifully complied. I had figured that I would pose for a photo op, give it a couple of smacks and then head to the gym for my workout. However, after the first few minutes of beating poor, defenseless pieces of lumber senseless, I decided that this was pretty fun. So, I kept going.

Apparently I passed muster, and our contractor Juan upgraded me to a 50-pound sledgehammer. I literally had to stop and catch my breath after about 5-10 good hits. I would guess I slung that weight 200+ times. (Have you ever picked up a 50 pound dumbbell in the Big Boy section of the gym?! Talk about an anerobic workout.) Forty-five minutes later, the cabinets were history.

Next, one of the guys started chipping 4x4 tiles off the walls. Hey, I wanna do THAT too! Believing me to be insane, they gave me a huge chisel and hammer. Pop, Pop, Pop- off the whole tiles came, in such an extremely satisfying manner! If you ever find yourself in the position to remove small tiles from walls, by all means, jump on it sisters! Pure joy.

Then came the floor-tile removal. Totally different animal. Even with the king-daddy of sledge hammers, there were no satisfying pops, just a disproportionately small amount of incomplete fractures. When you tired of that, you switched to a banging with a simple hammer, and finally to awkward wedging and scraping with other tools. This took FOR.EVER! If you ever have the opportunity to remove 6x6 tiles from Wonderboard, run! don’t walk, away from that task.

Nearly three hours later, I was covered in a mixture of blood, wood, dry-wall, sweat and tile fragments. I always wondered what produced “that construction-worker smell” and today I had actually perfected it myself.

After the demo was finished, Juan told my hubby that in all his projects, a client has never helped with the grunge work. Translation: Your wife is mad as a hatter.

Muscles I didn’t know I owned are screaming at me right now. They are begging to know why I would torture them so. I apologized, but informed them that we have an Ikea kitchen to build tomorrow so they had better just pull up their socks and get a good night’s rest!

Q: Have what is your favorite workout that doesn't involve a gym?

I agree with Juan. I think you're mad as a hatter. But like him, I'm in total awe.

All I culd think, was, okay, a good way to work off agressions, but enough already.

Here's to you girl. Maybe a new career is in the offing.

Sleep like a baby.

My favorite workout that doesn't involve a gym = walking in the Metroparks.

You are hardcore, lady! That is so badass. Love it. The most non-gym activity I get is walking around town (lots of walking since moving here!), but I try to make house cleaning a little workout, too!

Roda- yes, I'm crazy as a loon. I don't think Juan was in awe- just baffled!

VG- wow thanks for visiting the little blog! Welcome to you!

Thinny- London is SUCh a great walking town. One of my best friends has a flat there I swear the girl walks 10 miles a day without fail. AnD Fast too- I tell her I can't keep up! :-) And I agree, housework can be HARD- hello delts! :-)

Deb you look pretty freakin buff there in that first pic...rock out mama!

Thx for your comment on my blog the other day about if I need to take a bloggie break to get settled, blog world & friends will still be here when I return...that was such an awesome comment and I have actually been replaying it in my mind of such a kind thing for someone to say to me, so thank you:)

And also for your sunbutter assessment that yeah,it's runny but that you can dry it up with a paper towel and sorta drain it a bit. I probably wouldnt go to such lengths but I have been freezing it for a half hour before I indulge and that's more my speed. I'd love it if someone made a thicker sunbutter.

Good luck on your kitchen...we're both in home project hell (moving in and demo'ing) but the payoff is worth it :) Not that it's been "fun" but moving, packing, schlepping, unpacking, humping boxes up stairs, etc has been my workout....for weeks.

Averie- so glad you liked my comment on your blog- I meant it.

Re. Sunbutter in the freezer...you are pure genius- I shouldda thought of that...doink!! I keep something called Peter Pan Whipped pb in the freezer and it comes out in shaves (I put it there because it was horribly expired=whoops, well it hasn't killed me yet!)

And moving can be a humongous workout- rock it sistah.

Erika- come help assemble the cabinets, would you? You're just a short airplane ride away! :-)

Love it!! I would totally be in there too. Plus, your new kitchen will mean a lot more now that you've played a part in it :)

I moved out of a fourth-floor apartment last weekend. That. Was a workout.

Awesome Deb. I would love to take a sledgehammer to my kitchen...or anything really. What a great way to get out some frustrations.

I love me some stairs. :)

I love smashing up things- so much fun right! That is my fave part of house remodeling- definitely an awesome workout! :)

HAHAHAHAHA I LOVE THIS.

Your kitchen remodel looks amazing. And you're right. This is total project creep. I can't believe this all started from a fridge lightbulb being out!!!!

Ha! You're crazy!!!

My best non-gym workouts have come from home repair as well. A few times I have had to shovel massive amounts of dirt and burned enough calories where I could eat two large meat lover pizzas with extra cheese (Not that I would...ICK) and not gain weight.
