It's getting cold in LA again (well, it might have dropped below 70, which makes ME cold!) so I'm rethinking my standard Smoothies and Smoothies-in-a-Bowl. I decided to try something I hadn't tried before: A Smoothie Soup. Hot. Protein-rich. Here's what went into the Vitamix:
- Hot water
- Handful spinach (it was my morning green smoothie after all)
- 1/2 raw zucchini
- 1/4 tsp Xanthan Gum
- 1/2 tsp Guar Gum
- 1/2 tsp Agar powder
- Scoop chocolate protein powder
- sprinkle Stevia
- 1.5 Tablespoon Chia seeds. Then let sit for 10 minutes
The verdict? This was quite a low-cal meal- probably 280 maximum including the topping (even though I'm no longer counting calories, I'm just letting you know the stats!)... Here are my impressions:
- It was warm and comforting on a cold morning.
- It filled me up for a good couple of hours.
- The taste was surprisingly good, and not vegetal at all- really chocolaty.
- The consistency was a tad runny.
- Add more Chia seeds
- Use less hot water
- Use vanilla protein powder, and perhaps more of it..
- Use other veggies (cauliflower, yellow squash, pumpkin, butternut squash, etc)
- Try without veggies
- Try with fruit: nanners, peaches, pears
- Use some cooked oat groats or wheatberries for chew (blended gently at the end)
- Use oats or other carbs if desired
- Go crazy with the spices- cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, etc.
- Eat a nut butter on the side- more staying power.
- Have fun with the toppings- sky's the limits! Sprinkles anyone?

I give you props, that is a really green soup. Visually, I'd have to drink that thru a straw rather than eat it as a soup, I know that sounds odd but it's just the color of straw food not spoon for for me. Call me coo-coo.
Soups...well, Gena of Choosing Raw just posted a mexican themed soup that looked good sans garlic and onions.
In terms of soups, I think savory but I don't prefer savory. I prefer sweet.
So, I'd be inclined to make warm sweet foods/soups that included like almond milk, cinnamon, oats, the wheatberries would be nice, pumpkin, pumpkin pie spices like cardamom, ginger, etc maybe some apples thrown in, girl just throw it in the Vita and see what pops out :)
Good call on your Santoku being too small for me on my blog...that's what I'm thinkin too.
I love smoothies in a bowl :). Like ice cream!
Man, I need a Vitamix. I love how it can warm stuff up. I think I would use a banana in mine for sure, and maybe some berries to make it almost like a fruit compote :) YUM.
I have never thought of a Hot smoothie soup, but what a great idea!
Great concept. I'd have to do it w/out chocolate, can't handle sweet soups. But yu can do just about anything. It's the method that you're perfecting that is so cool.
woah! deb, this could be "the next big thing".. i have seen smoothies in a bowl, but NEVER hot. that is really clever!!!
What a creative idea! All you food bloggies are really good at whipping stuff up. I think it depends on what mood I'm in for soups. Butternut squash always sounds good to me (sweet) but then sometimes tomato or lentil sounds good (savory).
Thank you so much for your comment on my blog! I plan on responding soon!
I have googled hot smoothies so many times during the winter months and come up nothing every time. Sometimes, I just use hot water, a room temp. naner, and protein powder. Filling and warm. Maybe try some warm coconut milk kefir/chia seed gel? Banana? I'm liking this Deb - keep me posted on future warm experiments. :)
What a great idea! My ingredients would be more along the lines of what Averie said: oats, pumpkin, etc.
I guess more like runny porridge ...
Don't ya just love the change of weather?@
ahhhh a hot smoothie soup? that is definitely new and i will definitely need to try that!
glad i saw your link on janetha's - i LOVE smoothies!
Thanks to the "regulars" for humoring me in thinking that this looks appetizing. I'm thinking a hot banana PB concoction at a later date might make an appearance. Another heat wave in SoCal will prevent any more experiments for a little while :-)
Holly- welcome and thanks for stopping by!!
Hey Deb! I found you through Heather's blog. I am so interested in this warm smoothie concept!
Warm bananas, chocolate and PB, I am in! Can't wait to see what you create next! Adding you to my blog roll! :)
Thanks Amanda Panda- for stopping by and for the great Choc/PB/Nanner idea! Definitely will try that! :-)
I am a huge smoothie fan, and yours looks really tasty. I love eating my smoothies out of bowls. Enjoy your sunday :)
