Down-home Eats

Lara of Thinspired mentioned that it would be interesting (really?!) to see a 'day-in-the-life' regarding my food. So I thought that I would pretend to be a "real" food blogger day for a change, and take some photos of my eats.

As some of you know, we are remodeling our kitchen. If you'd like to see the Ikea adventure in progress, please click here and here. Meanwhile, we are living out of boxes in "The Trailer" (aka the back part of the house). Here are some photos:

The cat above is an R.A. Miller "masterpiece" from Athens, GA that we bought 16 years ago. We also have a "Blow Oscar", a crocodile and a bunny (the latter looks just like the cat). We met him in person and he was sweet as pie.

I bought the Spin bike for $2 from Revolution on Montana. Love the Climb Max for quickie workouts.

Nespresso Love

The Hub's stash of British Junk Food (yes "junk food" is capitalized)

'Culinarily' speaking, this is what I have to work with:
  • Tea Kettle
  • Coffee Machine
  • George Foreman Grill
  • VitaMix
Not bad. I can live with that...temporarily.

Notice one thing is missing from the list above that WAS in the photos:
  • Microwave
That is because I pretty much burned it up the other night when I put in eggs in a bowl to cook for 5:00 on 50% power, but I accidentally pressed 50:00 and forgot about it for 30 min!! Here's the omelet-gone-horribly-wrong:

Toxic egg & plastic Goo

As the stench of melted plastic and scorched eggs is NEARLY dissipated, we braved returning home last night after spending a few days at my Dad's. So here are my eats for today...

Breakfast:

My usual morning routine involves a REALLY good coffee from my Nespresso machine with milk foam from the Nespresso Aeroccino. Lately I find it compulsory to adorn this drink with sprinkles. I have no explanation for this behavior... regression perhaps?

Then I make two shakes: One Green Shake (mainly spirulina, a green veggie and a little protein) and one Protein/Fruit/Nut butter shake (my standard). I usually sip on the green one first, which holds me until 11ish, when I drink the other one. This allows me to have a late lunch.

Today was a bit different because I was running out the door for one of my favorite Kickboxing classes (you can read all about the tortuously-fabulous sweat-fest here). I didn't want to be all sloshy during class, so I did something very unusual: I grabbed an energy bar and ate the whole thing. Usually I'll have 1/3 or 1/2 of a bar, as a tide-me-over. But I reasoned: "This is breakfast." Many thanks to my friend Heather for sending my this yummy bar! Now I see why she likes it...the first ingredient is Organic Almond Butter-YEAH!

Plus it's not hard to look at Jay flexing his guns

While I can't say that the bar necessarily 'filled me up' (as in "oh man, I'm stuffed"), I certainly was not hungry throughout class, and had plenty of energy. I would do that routine again. As a "recovery drink", I drank half of each of my shakes that I had packed in my trusty cooler bag.

Lunch

I was craving a Salad-The-Size-Of-My-Head. Here it was:
  • Chopped organic romaine
  • Chopped organic spinach
  • Chopped organic Tomato
  • Jicima
  • Avocado
  • Half a juicy pear (I felt like something sweet)
  • Thinly sliced red onion
  • Hazelnut halves
  • Dressing: balsamic vinegar with a little bit of leftover tahini

I also had a couple of "open-faced sandwiches" as my Swedish relatives call them:
  • Wheat and Poppy seed Finn Crisp (I picked them up in the UK)
  • Cabot 50% fat white cheddar
  • Yves Veggie Salami

I put those on the George Foreman just to get some toasty/melty action. Very yummy. My salad out-did me. I could not finish it.

Though full from lunch, I felt like a little bit of something sweet, so I had a few pieces of my favorite candy at the moment...Wonka Tinglerz. Sadly, my spy at Nestle tells me they are being discontinued, so if you see them at a Walgreen's near you, that might be the last opportunity to taste them. They are basically chocolate covered Pop-Rocks.  They were a candy from the 70's that exploded in your mouth (fun) and in your throat (not so fun), and they pulled them off the market. But somehow Tinglerz sneaked onto the market.

Here are the soon-to-be-extinct Wonka Tinglers:

Late Afternoon Snack:
  • Chobani 0%fat
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Blob Peanut butter (I <3 not measuring, I really do)
  • Chia water (1/2 tsp chia in ice-cold water with ice cubes...so refreshing)
Dinner: Vitamix Soup
  • Veggies grilled on the GF: Cauliflower, Red onion, yellow squash
  • hot water
  • Small to-go packet of Tapatillo Hot sauce
Then on top:
  • Cooked wheatberries- just a sprinkle, for chew
  • Some reserved chopped grilled veggies above, for chew
  • Yves veggie Salami- cut into strips
FULL FULL FULL! If I hadn't blown up my microwave, I would probably have an Orville 100-calorie Kettle corn later, but I'll probably end up with some fruit and nut butter if I get hungry. I hope that you enjoyed my first and last attempt at being a "true" food blogger. Fun? Yes, but it takes all day just to photograph and document my eats. Kudos to real food bloggers. By the way, am I the only person who has the irresistible urge to shout: "YEAH baby! You're dead SEXY baby!!" when photographing food items? Name the movie from which I have stolen that classic line. :-D

Austin Powers! Now I want to say, "Do I make you horny baby...do I?" Probably not something you wanted to hear, but it was the first thing that popped into my head.

Your soup looks absolutely delicious - and after starting on jay Robb protein powder I can see why the bars would be so good. :)

I have to tell you - that plastic egg concoction is not doing it for me...heheh. I've done the same thing about pushing the wrong buttons on the 'wave - talk about oatmeal explosion!

I really loved "a day in the life of.." for your eats. But then I love food porn. :)

Ahh crap...I keep forgetting to hit the "email follow up" box!

You once asked me why I dont photograph or blog about everything I eat...and in addition to not needing the critques of the worldwide stage on what I do or don't eat, I don't document everything. But more on account of time and sanity or insanity...you're right photo op'ing every single thing, then uploading it, then talking about it, is too damn much work!

I enjoyed the egg disaster...sorry :)

And the Vitamix soup.

And if I could do dairy (whey protein) that Jay bar looks delish!

Here's hopin you get your full kitch back soon!

Hayley gets the price for AP. I wanted to use the other phrase with the "H" word but I'm trying to keep it PG-13! :-)

Averie- yes, photographing every morsel has left me absolutely exhausted! And this is now that I'm not eating nearly as frequently as I used to!! Re the egg disaster- the house still smells like a pool hall!!

$2!!!! for a Spin bike? Oh I am so jealous!

I really enjoyed seeing your day of eats!

I used to go to a special "British Food store" to get my dh his chocolate but he tells me not too anymore (I guess he's worried he'd eat it LOL) but I know he would drool over your pic.

I have yet to try Jay Robb ... read a lot about him. What do you think of his protein powder? (I normally ise Muscle Milk Light or Optimum Nutrition)

LOVE IT! Thank you for indulging me ;) Love the British treats stash. I spy Cadburys! And the eggs....ewwwww! ;) I feel I have so much to learn from you with your shakes. I just make the same one over and over.

Austin Powers.

I've always wondered what a day in the life of Deb looked like. Thanks for sharing.

Chia seeds in ice-cold water? Really? Never tried them plain like that. I bet that would taste good on a really hot day.

You must have a small head...that salad didn't look that big to me. ;)

Love ya Deb. You make me laugh.

P.S. - SO freaking jealous of your spin bike deal!

Michelle- is your DH a Brit?? I like Jay robb's protein powder (thanks to HEAB for them!) He's a bit pricey and I just buy whatever looks good. wouldn't recommend the EAS though. Not loving that.

Thinny- Hubs goes to Tesco's every time he goes to the UK and FILLS an empty suitcase with candies and "biscuits" (aka cookies). He should be as large as a house...grrr...men!

Heabs- good job with AP- you and Hayley are obviously fans like me!
The salad was E.Nor.Mous (remember Dick's E.Nor.Mous from AP?! Tee hee giggle)...look at how big it was on the Adirondack chair!!!

The Spin bike- come and get it the rusty relic. My chiro has kiboshed it from my life. :-( Bad for my neck!

I lived in a kitchen remodel "project" for 3 years.

I can do WONDERS with a toaster oven, a GF grill (that is dead now) and a microwave.

luckily THOSE days are over, but I so know the frustration. it's amazing how creative we get when we need to~

I am going to give Chia water a go, never thought to use em that way.

I agree, that looks like a lot of work to document all you eat! Good stuff too, well, except the "egg"!

Deb (Smoothie Girl Eats Too) said...

Cindy- thanks for the empathy! :-) I, too <3 my Foreman!

The chia in the water was a result of my SIL telling me that in Mexico they put chia in lemonade! So I figured, why not water? If you drink/"eat" them right away, they are nutty and crunchy. About 10 minutes in, they get chewing and a little slimy, but I don't mind that. THanks for stopping by!
