Soy Grits: a review

A few weeks ago, I found some soy grits at Clarks Nutrition. I figured that this was the perfect love-child of what I want to eat and what I need to eat. Want=Corn. Need= Protein. I have seen them once or twice on labels of various packaged cereals or cereal bars. I vowed to hunt down those elusive little grains and see what all of the fuss was about.

I have have tried them twice so far- once sweet and once savory. Must say I do like them. They remind me of (what else?) corn grits, but without the strong (yet lovely) corn flavor. Sadly without intervention, the volume they provide is minuscule. (see photos).. Not good for a volume eater. I'm trying to be more normal and eat less volume and more substance, but I simply cannot subsist on a tiny amount of food that turns out to be calorically dense and not filling! Perhaps if it was filling, that would be a different story. I just couldn't take the chance on eating them plain without the following modification...

Photos: Pre-intervention: Nearly as flat as my iPod: Not gonna work for me!

Photos: Post-intervention: Ahh, that's better! Final Photo with the finishing touches of cheese and paprika. Yum.

I pulled a classic Heab-maneuver and added cooked cauliflower to soy grits in the Vitamix- (any standard blender, or hand blender will do). You'll see from the photos that it pretty much DOUBLED the volume and upped the creaminess substantially. And honestly kids, you don't taste the cauliflower. The savory bowl was a real treat... I melted some pepper jack cheese on top and sprinkled with some paprika. Must say, it was nummmy. And of equal importance... filling. It reminded me of when I used to visit my girlfriend in Athens, Georgia and eat cheese grits for breakfast- good times.

Photos: Another "before" (very very sad) and "after" (much fluffier)

Speaking of kids and cauliflower, there is a great book that came out from Jerry Seinfeld's wife, Jessica that was written with kids in mind . It's called Deceptively Delicious and it finds all sorts of sneaky and fabulous ways to incorporate healthy veggies and fruits into otherwise naughty, yet unsuspecting recipes. I bought one for myself and one for my girlfriend's little 9 year old daughter. There are recipes like Banana Bread with cauliflower, Chocolate Pudding with avocado, Blueberry Oatmeal bars with spinach, Chocolate cupcakes with avocado and cauliflower, and Brownies with carrot and spinach... Very Heab-like, and creative. Check it out!

Now for a totally unrelated giggle-part of this post: I opened up my brand new curling iron and for once in my life decided to actually read the instructions (Gasp!) Here are some of the chuckle-inspiring warnings, courtesy of the lawyers at ConAir:

Photos: If you can enlarge the photo above, it states: "Do not use while bathing or in a shower".
Also, "Never use while sleeping", and of course...stating the obvious..."This product can burn eyes"...Thanks for the 411.

I thought everyone slept with their curling iron.

Lovely cauli-grits. Thanks for the shout out my friend. I've heard about Jessica Seinfeld's book. She must be a HEAB reader. ;)

Just read your Wii update - sounds like Big Brother drill sergeant. Video games amaze me these days. I'm so old school - I miss Super Mario Bros.

Hee hee- as I just turned on my beloved curling iron, I remembered your comment about everyone sleeping with their curling iron and it made me laugh outloud- you're a riot, HEABS! :-D

PS. Are you old enough to remember Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man (politically correct, notice)? If so, you are REALLY old like me! :-D

I'm finally going back through your old posts. Now we need to make savory soy grits with cauliflower and (hold on to your hats...) whipped egg whites! Instant souffle.
