Smoothie-in-a-Jar = SIAJ LOVE

OK so I'm easily pleased. I don't get to the bottom of my nut-butter jars very quickly. I eat nut butters in half -TBS to one TBS-at-a-time increments. Unlike SOME people I know (ahem, Heather) who can eat nut butters with reckless abandon and still stay slim, I am too scared to use up that many calories in one place and end up gaining weight. And keep in mind that if I had one item to choose to eat exclusively for the rest of my life, it would be peanut butter.

The problem is that I like variety. I want to choose from a huge array of nut butters. I have a huge section in my fridge for nut butters. Right now I have:
  • 2 types of PB (one with raisins and cinnamon)
  • 3 types of almond butter (raw and roasted)
  • Pistacio butter
  • Sunflower butter
  • 2 Better N PB (Chocolate and Regular)
  • Cashew butter (my least fave)
  • Hemp seed butter (definitely an acquired taste- plus it's bright GREEN!)
  • I threw away the hideous Walden Farms Franken-food PB- it was vile.

So you can imagine, that I go through my jars slowly. I've been having so much oat-in-a-jar envy with all the food bloggers eating their oatmeal out of their nut butter jars- getting every last yummy spoonful. I will confess that this scares me. Nut butters are soooo caloric that I could imagine ingesting an extra 400 calories just in nut butters stuck to the sides of the jars. I can't afford it!

So yesterday, I finally made it to the bottom of one of my jars of PB. It took months to get there. But in typical Deb-style, I first scraped out the remainder of the PB to measure that I had a TBS, then put it back, smushing it all around as it it hadn't been removed. I must say that did take a little bit of the magic away :-( One day perhaps I'll loosen the reins a bit. Not yet obviously.

But I figured I may as well put a Deb-slant on the jar-joy... so what else could I do? Obviouisly, a Smoothie-in-a-jar. I decided to make it a different smoothie than my usual go-to PB&J... banana! I added rhubarb for fluff, as I've done for years, but I added too much and it got too tangy. Oh well, live and learn! It was quite yummy though after I threw a sprinkle of granola on top for some crunch after the photo was taken.

So now, I give you....Smoothie-in-a-Jar...

Glad I'm not the only one who cannot eat nut butters by the tablespoon. I can eat sugar and carbs though :) Not something that I'm proud to say but yeah, I can. But since 90% of my diet is raw veggies, I figure the other 10% may as well be exactly as I want it! I, too, if I am not careful, would end up with a pantry collection like yours b/c I just don't go thru them that fast, which is why I have never bought SunButter...just another pantry clog that I wont buy til I thin out my current stash. The other prob for me and nuts/nut butters is my body doesn't seem to digest them very well. I must not have the nut-digesting enzyme. Anyway, thanks for the HONEST post!

Love it Deb! You're so funny, but I totally get the fear of nut butter. I too was there not too long ago, but I've obviously gotten over it. However, I still have plenty of fear foods...almond butter just isn't one of them. :)

As you know, so super jealous of your nut butter jar collection. It's about time you finally got to the bottom of one, and the Smoothie-in-a-Jar? Perfect!

In answer to your last post, I always have to shake up my workouts and keep things exciting. I'm constantly going to different yoga studios, trying out new teachers, or doing different downloads. I also love to hike on new trails. Sometimes, I simply need a change of scenery. A cute new workout outfit usually helps get me excited as well. ;)

Okay.. I found you through HEAB.. does that make me a HEABie?... uh okay.. anyway, I thought of something as I was reading this post.. how do you measure a tbsp of peanut/almond/etc. butter?? I mean, is it a rounded tbsp or a scraped flat tbsp. Cuz if it's a flat scraped tbsp... welll DANG.. that's a lot of calories packed in a itty bitty bit of nut butter... anyhoo, do you know??

Soooo glad I found your blog... I'm keeping an eye on your thoughts about the vitamix... it would be quite an investment! wow..

Annie- love the name of your blog and thanks for the nice comment.

I always scrape scrape scrape and even scrape inside that little tablespoon so that I don't underestimate the calories- so anal I know. I believe that your comment suggests that nut butters are calorie dense and YES they are!! But sooooooooo yummy, healthy and even filling.

There was a video post on the blogosphere months ago that showed the correct way to measure and it's actually even below "the top" of your measuring scoop or cup. I know I know, sad times. :-(

Thanks for the comment!

I think you should change the name of your blog to Nut Butter Hussy! I think I could be monogamous for SunButter
